Where would you find plate glass negatives of the Wright Brothers flight?

Answer: 303 glass-plate negatives documenting the earliest flights of Orville and Wilbur Wright can be found at the Library of Congress.

For the historians and book lovers among us, this item caught my attention

"A new book from Library of Congress Historian John Y. Cole, “America’s Greatest Library: An Illustrated History of the Library of Congress,” tells the story of the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution and how it came to be the world’s largest library.
Librarian of Congress Carla D. Hayden calls the Library “a place where you can touch history and imagine your future,” and the story of its creation and evolution comes alive in this rich chronology. The book is the first authoritative history of the Library published in nearly 20 years.
“America’s Greatest Library,” which will be published Jan. 9 by D Giles Limited in association with the Library of Congress, highlights the personalities and events that created and sustained the institution over its 217-year history, starting at a time when Washington had no other libraries or cultural institutions. Packed with fascinating stories, compelling images and little-known nuggets of information, the narrative traces the growth of the collections with the development of the nation’s capital through a combination of concise milestones, brief essays and vivid photographs and illustrations."

Meeting to review "Council Procedures Manual" - Jan 10

Before the Town Council meeting on Wednesday, Jan 10, the subcommittee looking to possible revisions or updates to the Council Procedures Manual is scheduled to meet at 6:00 PM in room 205.

The procedures manual is what sets out the order (agenda) and conduct of the meeting. The meeting is governed by Robert's Rules of Order per this manual.

Review the current version here

or from the Town of Franklin webpage

Side note: when visiting New Bedford this summer, I found out that Captain Henry Martyn Roberts had been assigned there to build Fort Rodman (now called Fort Tabor Park) to protect the entrance to the harbor. It was while stationed there, he conducted a meeting and lost control of it. He went home that night to write down the process so that wouldn't happen the next time. These parliamentary procedures are what we know and use today as Robert's Rules of Order.

"advised residents to shovel out fire hydrants"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Franklin Police Sgt. Brian Johnson warned drivers about the icy roads.
“The biggest fear right now is things freezing,” he said. “Unfortunately when it gets this cold, if the roads are still snow-covered or wet, even throwing down sand and salt doesn’t do too much.”
Local DPW officials have also been reaching out to residents in locations around town that historically have water pipe problems during the arctic cold."

Dear Friends,

It is my hope that you had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and joyous holiday season.

In the legislature we have completed much work but there is so much yet to do in this legislative session. As the new year begins, we reflect on what this past year has brought us and for what we are thankful. We addressed healthcare reform where I co-sponsored bills to address rising costs, negligent caretakers and risky insurance practices.

I filed bipartisan legislation to improve access and affordability of cancer clinical trials across the state. We took up the issue of graduate student loan debt that is affecting our children and families and debated telecommunication regulations for the coming year. These are just a few of the many important topics taken up this session. Be sure to read more about my legislation in the Legislative Spotlight section.

In the past year, I've worked to bring back significant funding to this district for various programs and projects, including infrastructure improvements, environmental protection grants, public school aid and much more. I've also worked to maintain fiscal discipline in our state budget and only spend within our means – and not waste your hard earned tax dollars.

The Spring 2018 session will be a busy one and I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to continue improving our great Commonwealth.

I have had the pleasure of meeting various constituents from our district at my office hours and at State House visits. I appreciate hearing from you on the things that matter to our district and our Commonwealth.

It is an honor to serve as your State Senator.
As always, please feel free to reach out to my office directly at 617-722-1555 or email Richard.Ross@masenate.gov.

Sincerely,
