FTC Scam Alert: Scammers create fake emergencies to get your money

Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information
by Carol Kando-Pineda
Attorney, Division of Consumer and Business Education

Scammers try to trick you into thinking a loved one is in trouble. They call, text, email, or send messages on social media about a supposed emergency with a family member or friend. They ask you to send money immediately.

To make their story seem real, they may claim to be an authority figure, like a lawyer or police officer; they may have or guess at facts about your loved one. These impostors may insist that you keep quiet about their demand for money to keep you from checking out their story and identifying them as impostors.

But no matter how real or urgent this seems — it's a scam.

Franklin School For The Performing Arts To Host Open Houses - July 18, July 31

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will host summer Open Houses on Wednesday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 38 Main Street in downtown Franklin. The community is invited to tour the facilities, speak with faculty and staff, and learn more about FSPA programs in music, dance and drama. Prospective students are also encouraged to schedule a complimentary trial class.

Founded in 1985 by Director Raye Lynn Mercer, FSPA has been dedicated to the enjoyment of the arts for all ages and to the artistic growth and development of young people. The school offers classes in all dance disciplines, acting, musical theater, voice, and instrumental instruction, whether for recreational enjoyment or serious study.

FSPA is also home to the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano. An extensive calendar of year-round performing opportunities features musicals, plays, ballets, voice and instrumental recitals, opera scenes, musical theater and dance company showcases, and more. Many FSPA students are also cast, by audition, in the affiliated Franklin Performing Arts Company’s annual season of shows. FSPA TALENT offers management services for young performers who elect to pursue professional opportunities.

FSPA is also proud to offer FSPA Academy, an academic alternative for students seeking a challenging curriculum in a supportive, flexible environment that encourages their creative goals. Provided Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in partnership with TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA), the program builds upon TECCA’s state-approved online curriculum offering Music Theory, math tutoring, field trips and more.

In addition to the Academy, FSPA also offers FSPA AfterSchool, an enrichment program for students in grades K-5, providing supervised recreational experiences, including games, crafts, and other creative arts activities. The program begins at the close of the regular school day, with transportation available from Franklin and Medway schools.

The FSPA summer session runs from July 2 to August 24, and fall classes begin on September 10. Registration is ongoing for all programs. Call (508) 528-8668 or visit www.FSPAonline.com for more information, including the FSPA catalogue, summer brochure and fall class schedule.

Teenage classic rock band SOAR to host fundraiser benefiting Best Buddies - July 8

SOAR wanted to make their July 8, 2018 show at the Foxboro Orpheum Theater (Marilyn Rodman Performing Arts Center) a bit more special, and decided to turn their show into a fundraiser with the goal of benefiting other kids.

From June 8th through July 8th, SOAR is giving back to the community by performing at a number of fundraising events, including two Relay for Life events (fundraisers for American Cancer Society; Attleboro and Medway, MA) and a fundraiser for Gilly’s House (www.gillyshouse.com a residential program for young men struggling to recover from addiction).

While SOAR is honored to provide entertainment for these great fundraisers, SOAR’n for Best Buddies is distinct because this event was conceived and organized by SOAR. The band discussed a number of potential beneficiaries for the fundraiser, but quickly decided on Best Buddies (www.bestbuddies.org) as one of SOAR’s band members has a sibling who benefited from the Best Buddies program while in high school.

This fundraising event gives the band an opportunity to give back to an organization that has helped so many, including a band member’s sister.

About the Event

SOAR’n for Best Buddies will feature special guest host Chachi Loprete, longtime host of Boston’s Breakfast with the Beatles radio program.

This is a concert fundraiser to benefit Best Buddies, featuring live classic rock music as performed by SOAR. The fundraiser is on Sunday July 8th; the music starts at 6:30 PM and the show will run for 2+ hours.

In addition to being a fundraiser, the show is also intended to be a fun event for Best Buddies. To ensure that our Best Buddies guests can all enjoy the show, SOAR will not use any strobe lights and foam earplugs will be available at no cost.

The pre-show meet and greet pizza party with the band (and any special guests) starts at 5 PM. This event includes pizza and drinks (non-alcoholic); pictures with the band (and any special guests) and first-choice seating via early entry into the theater (see ticket information below).

Tickets

• Available from band members for $12
• Available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3490482 or www.orpheum.org (Note: there is a $1.41 service fee per ticket on-line)
