"A willingness to accept change"

Franklin has some of the ingredients that helped Hudson:

  • The SNETT rail trail is located just outside of downtown
  • Local zoning was changed in 2017 to allow distiller, winery or brewery tasting rooms
  • The downtown renovation project was just completed in 2016
  • Local businesses and town officials are talking about what needs to be done

What remains to be done now?

"Downtown Hudson was quiet when Michael Kasseris stepped out into the late night air in 2012.
Behind him was a Main Street space that had once housed a printing shop, a bagel shop and a gifting shop.
His uncle owned the building. Kasseris and his two business partners had just opened Rail Trail Flatbread Co. -- a trendy new restaurant featuring wood-fired pizza and craft beer.
He looked around. The downtown stores, tucked inside historic brick buildings, were empty. The parking spaces were empty. There was no foot traffic."
Continue reading the MassLive article about Hudson
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2017/08/hudson_how_this_small_massachu.html

It was the historic buildings and their curb appeal, the rail trail, the economy in an upswing, the streetscaping and a dozen little things that became big things.

The Cake Bar's Alec Callahan

"Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Callahan.
Alec, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I had many interests such as sports, I loved playing baseball, reading comic books and super heroes which is an obsession still to this day. I would say one of the main reasons I ended up going toward the culinary field was coming from such a large family that was cooking all the time. No matter what time of day it was it felt like my mom and aunts were in the kitchen cooking. Sometimes I would offer to help but the majority of the time I would just complain and ask if it was ready yet. I grew up with my older brother and 2 cousins who are basically my sisters. The 4 of us were always together and did anything and everything together including going out to eat to the point of being a well-known foursome in many of the town’s local restaurants. Our tastes have changed but not our love of food."

"it was our duty to be a part of keeping his memory alive"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"When Bob Vozzella first opened his winery, La Cantina, in 2013, part of his mission was to give back to local charities and causes.
“Small local-run family businesses count on local support. I feel it’s important for business owners to find ways to return the favor and look for ways to support others in need,” Vozzella said.
Over the July 4 weekend, Vozzella launched a new wine, a special edition Malbec to benefit the Matthew Pucino Foundation.
Staff Sgt. Pucino was 34 on Nov. 23, 2009 when he was killed by an improvised explosive device in the vicinity of Pashay Kala, Afghanistan. Pucino was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha Intelligent Sergeant who grew up in Bourne and Plymouth."

#ShopFranklin features Elizabeth's Bagels (video)

#shopFranklin - supporting small business speaks with Jen Garcia of Elizabeth's Bagels in Franklin,MA. Elizabeth's Bagels preserved the age old art of perfectly kettle boiled bagels. This delicacy is then augmented with a great selection of in house blended cream cheese options, seasonal offerings, loose leaf teas and an assortment of coffee creations

One of my favorite breakfasts is to walk to Elizabeth's Bagels, grab a bagel breakfast sandwich and coffee, then walk over to the Sculpture Park to enjoy breakfast before continuing the walk around Franklin and home.

Rail Good Coffee expands the brewing

On the #shopFranklin front, the recent announcement by Rail Good Coffee reminds me that they are now operating in three locations. Folks who use the Franklin/Dean station can stop for coffee in the station shop. Rail Good Coffee also operates the coffee shop at the Walpole Station and recently reached an agreement to operate the Franklin/Forge Park Station coffeeshop.

Three opportunities to get Rail Good Coffee.

And now this week, Rail Good Coffee is also offered in pound packs to brew at home or the office.

Way to go Randy!

Friendly reminder to catch the new Franklin Almanac

Friendly reminder to catch the new Franklin Almanac on Franklin TV. I caught the broadcast at noon on Wednesday. I knew there was a segment about Franklin Matters but I had not known that the #shopFranklin Small Business Showcase was also featured. The Holiday Stroll and the plastic bag ban discussion also get covered in this format. Very well done!

Franklin TV journalist Polikseni Manxhari
Franklin TV journalist Polikseni Manxhari
"There’s a new program in town. In fact, it’s all about the town. At Franklin TV we’ve launched our very own news-magazine program, Franklin Almanac. Like an actual almanac of information, it’s a compendium– of life in Franklin, produced and hosted (and written and edited) by our TV journalist Polikseni Manxhari.

See Almanac this week on All-Access TV.  Almanac also has an introductory run weekdays at noon on our TownHall TV channel, Comcast11/Verizon29."

"I feel that if I do a little bit to help, others will do a little bit as well"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"To help homeless people in Boston, local charity Make Change for Change will deliver 100 backpacks filled with survival and comfort items during their first "Backpack Brigade" this Christmas Eve.
On their trip to Boston, volunteers with Make Change for Change will first deliver backpacks to Rosie's Place, a homeless shelter for women in Boston. Volunteers will then deliver to other Boston homeless shelters, yet to be confirmed. The group will then end their trip handing out the backpacks to homeless people in Central Square.
The filled backpacks cost about $50 each. According to Corey Nappa, a Franklin resident and board member of Make Change for Change, 75 percent of the donated items came from local anonymous donors, and 25 percent of the items were purchased by the charity."
