Census Bureau to Email Households to Encourage Response to the 2020 Census

Census Bureau to Email Households to Encourage Response to the 2020 Census

JULY 27, 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced that it will begin emailing households in low-responding areas to encourage them to respond to the 2020 Census.
Millions of emails will be sent this week and then grow in numbers and continue into September. These emails supplement a final campaign reminding people to respond to the 2020 Census on their own, as census takers begin asking households (https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2020/nonresponding-households-follow-up.html) to respond to the census.

Learn More

The messages alert households in low-response areas that time is running out and their response to the 2020 Census is important for their communities. The email messages will invite people to respond online at 2020census.gov.
People who receive the email and haven't already responded should click on the link provided and complete the census online. It's easy, safe and important.
The emails will go to all households that the Census Bureau has contact information for in census block groups with a response rate lower than 50%. This will include households who may have already responded. In total, the Census Bureau expects to email more than 20 million households in these low-responding areas.
The email messages will come from 2020census@subscriptions.census.gov and will give recipients the option to opt out of receiving future messages. The Census Bureau is also considering sending text messages to areas that have low response.
The Census Bureau's recent success with contacting households by email to participate in the Household Pulse Survey prompted the agency to add these methods to support the 2020 Census. This contact method will help increase response rates and reduce the need for in-person follow-up.
The Census Bureau is continuing to review the use of text messages and will make an announcement prior to deploying that outreach. In addition to emailing households, the Census Bureau is increasing other outreach efforts during one last push to encourage everyone to respond to the census online, by phone or by mail. The Census Bureau recently announced that it has launched Mobile Questionnaire Assistance, a program that offers assistance with responding at locations such as grocery stores and pharmacies in low-responding areas.
Additionally, the Census Bureau has expanded its paid advertising—launching a series of new advertisements aimed at increasing online response and expanding to a total of 45 non-English languages receiving some level of paid media support.
Households have until October 31 to respond to the 2020 Census. However, census takers have begun following up with households that haven't responded yet in select areas and will begin following up with households nationwide in August.

FHS Class of 2020 post graduation plans

Thanks to the FHS administration for sharing the data to create the following pivot table. While some graduates are headed off to military (Army, US Coast Guard), some off to the working world, many have plans to continue their education in a two or four year college or university.

More than 80 institutions get 2 or more graduates. Another 50+ institutions get at least one graduate. So depending upon how you count the categories, the class of 2020 is certainly spreading out!

Don’t Forget to Respond: 2020 Census Reminder Postcards Arriving

Don't Forget to Respond: 2020 Census Reminder Postcards Arriving

APRIL 27, 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau is beginning to send reminder notice postcards to an estimated 69 million households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. About 53.4% of households across the country have already responded since invitations began arriving in mailboxes on March 12. Those households that have not yet responded to the census will receive an in person visit by a census taker to collect their information later this summer.

Learn More

According to the Census Bureau's online response map tracking the nation's participation in the census, almost 79 million households have already responded online, by phone or by mail.
States with the highest response include, (top 5 states).
  • Minnesota 64.0%
  • Iowa 61.2%
  • Wisconsin 60.8%
  • Nebraska 60.7%
  • Michigan 60.0%
Counties with 250,000 or more population with the highest response rate include (top 5 counties).
  • Washington County, Minnesota 73.6%
  • Anoka County, Minnesota 72.9%
  • Waukesha County, Wisconsin 72.5%
  • Dakota County, Minnesota 71.8%
  • Macomb County, Michigan 70.2%
The Census Bureau strongly encourages the public to respond online at 2020census.gov. Households can respond online in English or 12 other languages or by phone. Households can also respond by mail using the paper questionnaire that was recently mailed to every non-responding address. Households that received a census invitation in the mail and have yet to respond will receive a paper questionnaire by April 30.
Households will receive another reminder postcard in the mail between April 27-May 9. The Census Bureau pushed back this mailing to allow the paper questionnaire package to arrive several days ahead of the postcard. The postcard is one reminder in a series of reminders that the Census Bureau has mailed nonresponding households since mid-March urging them to respond. Census takers will visit every address that does not respond on their own to collect responses in person. Responding now to the 2020 Census will minimize the need for a census taker to visit your home later this year. For more information, visit 2020census.gov.

In the News: 12 ballot questions for 2020 take next step; driver license legislation proposed for immigrants

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Questions on a range of topics from auto repair to ranked-choice voting to the public funding of abortion passed a key hurdle Wednesday on their way to the Massachusetts ballot.

Attorney General Maura Healey determined 12 of 16 initiative petitions submitted to her office last month have passed constitutional muster.

Two of the questions are proposed constitutional amendments that might not reach the ballot until 2022. The rest could appear next year.

The next daunting step for supporters is to gather the signatures of tens of thousands of Massachusetts voters."

Attorney General Maura Healey determined 12 of 16 initiative petitions

"Supporters of a bill that would make driver’s licenses available to undocumented immigrants packed the Statehouse’s largest hearing room Wednesday to renew the push for a policy that has come up short in previous sessions and would need to be passed with enough support to survive a likely veto by Gov. Charlie Baker.

The legislation filed by Reps. Tricia Farley-Bouvier of Pittsfield and Christine Barber of Somerville, and Sen. Brendan Crighton of Lynn, would permit all qualified residents, regardless of immigration status, to apply for and receive a standard state license under the state’s now-two-tiered system.

Fourteen states, including Connecticut and Vermont, have laws in place allowing all residents to acquire some type of license or permit regardless of immigration status, according to supporters. The Massachusetts legislation would not affect federal Real ID-compliant licenses, which require proof of citizenship or lawful residence as well as a Social Security number."
