In the News: another safe city recognition; volunteers step up for the 4th

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Parents might be happy to learn that Franklin has been named one of the top 30 safest cities in the country to raise a child in 2017.
According to SafeWise.com Franklin comes in at number 12 on the list, namely because of its quality schooling and for winning the 7th Annual AP Honor Roll Award for superior high schools.
Town Administrator Jeff Nutting said he is proud to learn of the recognition and “happy to accept the results.”
Nutting, an eight-year Franklin resident, said the list is long as to why he likes living in town."

"As a child, it was a family tradition for Michelle Beaupre to attend the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
“I grew up in Norfolk and it’s something that we often went to. It’s something I’ve gone to since I was a kid,” Beaupre said.
The parade and fireworks were always a highlight, the Franklin resident said."

“It will look the same as it has in the past”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"After it appeared earlier this year that the town’s Independence Day celebration might not take place, volunteers have stepped forward to ensure its survival.
This year’s celebration had been in jeopardy because of a lack of volunteers. The two co-chairmen of the Franklin Fourth of July Coalition - Warren Revell and Michael Kelly - had announced their retirement and there was no one to replace them, despite years of searching.
Revell said Tuesday that two volunteers - Paul Kortick and Joseph Carmignani - have taken on the responsibility of running the event. He said he was “absolutely” pleased that the celebration would continue.
“Once these things get lost, they tend to stay lost,” he said. “A lot of people didn’t want to see it go away, but they didn’t want to step up to run it, either.”

In the News: maybe no party on the 4th; proactively offering drug a consideration

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Unless organizers find someone new to take the reins, it’s possible the local Independence Day celebration will not take place this year.
The Franklin Fourth of July Coalition co-chairmen - Warren Revell and Mike Kelly - announced their retirement from the effort this year. The lack of volunteers, rather than money, is the problem, Revell said Friday.
Revell said the group has been trying to find new people to continue the event, but years of searching have borne little fruit.
“I’ve been trying to get help for 10 years,” he said. “Everybody wants (the festivities), but no one wants to do anything about it.”

"Pharmacies should proactively offer the overdose-reversing drug naloxone to help put it in the hands of people at risk of abusing opioids, according to a recent Boston Medical Center study.
The study, which was published last month in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, found that while naloxone is available without a prescription at Massachusetts pharmacies, patients and their loved ones are reluctant to ask for it due to the stigma that surrounds addiction. Additionally, pharmacists may be reluctant to bring up the subject out of fear of offending patients.
The Boston Medical Center researchers worked with focus groups of people taking prescription opioids for chronic pain management, recovering addicts, family members of addicts and pharmacists.
“The idea of universally offering it was attractive to all the groups,” said epidemiologist Traci Green, the study’s lead author and associate director of the Injury Prevention Center at Boston Medical Center. “This makes it a less-stigmatizing interaction at the pharmacy.”

In the News: 4th of July preparations, teens and screens a concern

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The annual Franklin 4th of July Celebration is gearing up to offer five days of fun on the town common.
"Plans have been finalized for this year's 4th of July Celebration," says Warren Revell of the Franklin 4th of July Coalition, which has been hard at work for months planning the festival.
The celebration begins on Thursday and continues through Monday."

"This summer, many parents may recall their childhoods running around outside as they watch their own kids spend beautiful days inside with Playstations and Xboxes. While some children might think parents just don't understand, educators and doctors say the concern that kids and teens are too wired-in is very real.
Last month, Hopkinton Middle School showed the documentary "Screenagers" to teachers, parents and the student body. The film, directed by primary care physician Delaney Ruston, explores the ways cell phones, computers and electronic media are consuming and shaping the lives of today's teens in unprecedented ways. The screening was followed by a Q&A discussion where students could raise their own concerns about their relationships with technology."

In the News: no room for fireworks this year, environmental oversight budget cuts hurt

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin

Council member Thomas Mercer said the fields at the new high school - where the fireworks would be launched - were the holdup.
"We have not accepted the fields from the contractor," Mercer said, adding that the town would have to take ownership of the fields before it could hold the display there. "As the chairman of the building committee, I'll tell you they're not ready."
The town, said Nutting, did not have any other proper launch locations, which would include adequate parking, decent visibility and a certain amount of space.
"We had the state fire marshal out here, and we went everywhere," he said. "We went from place to place to place with him, and couldn't get any satisfaction."

"Basic environmental protections for Massachusetts residents have unraveled in the last 15 years as deep budget cuts and shifting political priorities take hold.
The state has slashed bacterial testing of lakes, rivers and other surface water by more than two-thirds in the last decade, according to state-reported data analyzed by The Eye. Inspections of contaminated properties and waste and water sites, meanwhile, have dropped 24 percent from fiscal year 2001."
