GOOD DEEDS: Celebrating the Fourth of July

By William P. O’Donnell, Norfolk County Register of Deeds

As summer comes bringing with it the unmistakable scent of freshly cut grass and impending cookouts our thoughts turn to a truly special day in Norfolk County and in our country, the Fourth of July. It is more than just fireworks and parades, it is our collective moment to celebrate the very birth of this nation and to honor the spirit of independence that led to our country's creation.

Celebrating the Fourth of July
Celebrating the Fourth of July
Here in Norfolk County, the Fourth of July holds special meaning, thanks to our historical ties to the very birth of the United States of America. We are not just a county that observes history, we are a county that made it. Norfolk County has the honor of being the birthplace of four United States presidents, including John Adams and John Quincy Adams, crucial figures in the nation's founding. The communities that make up Norfolk County today played a role in the very events leading up to the Revolutionary War. The spirit of self-determination runs deep in the history of our communities.

Think of John Hancock, that prominent merchant and statesman with deep roots in Quincy and Braintree. His famously bold signature on the Declaration of Independence was not just a mark on parchment, it was an act of audacious defiance, a symbol of commitment that risked everything. As a leading figure in Massachusetts politics following the Revolution, he continued to serve the state as the very first Governor of Massachusetts notably signing the 1793 legislation that officially established Norfolk County.

Then there is John Adams, the second President of the United States and a key figure from Braintree which later became Quincy, who tirelessly championed American independence. As one of five Continental Congress members tasked with drafting the Declaration of Independence, his influence was crucial. His contributions did not end there, he later served as a diplomat abroad which was instrumental in securing foreign alliances, particularly with France, which played a decisive role in the Revolutionary War.

There was Paul Revere, who has ties to Canton, who embarked on his famous ride to Lexington, specifically to warn Hancock and Adams that British troops were marching to seize colonial military supplies and arrest these very leaders. His urgent message, delivered as part of an alarm network, was vital in alerting these key patriots and giving local militias precious time to prepare.

The commitment to self-governance and the fierce willingness to stand against tyranny were deeply ingrained in the communities that now make up Norfolk County. These were the ideals that fueled the Revolutionary War, and they are the very same ideals we should celebrate on the Fourth of July.

So, as a county steeped in American history, Norfolk County offers a truly unique backdrop for our Fourth of July celebrations. Our communities do not just exemplify the enduring values of independence and resilience, they embody them having lived them from the very start.

This year, when you fire up the grill, head to a parade, or simply watch a firework display, take a moment to really feel the profound meaning of this day. Know that you are connecting to something truly extraordinary. Let us remember the immense sacrifices made for our freedom and wholeheartedly celebrate the spirit of our nation, right here in Norfolk County. After all, it is a legacy we have been living for centuries.

Happy 4th of July.

Franklin 4th of July Fireworks info - no rain date

Via the Franklin Police Dept:

***FRANKLIN FIREWORKS***
Tomorrow (Saturday, July 6) night the fireworks are set to return to the high school weather permitting. If you’re out exploring Franklin you’ll see no parking signs throughout town (Panther Way, Oak Street by the schools, Daniel McCahill Way, and Main Street by the old Charter School and up to Main Street). Just so we’re all on the same page, no parking means no parking. There will be plenty of parking at the schools, ice rinks, and elsewhere around the common. Don’t forget about the carnival up at the common.
Around 9 pm we’ll begin to close roads. Expect closures of Church Square, Beaver Street at 140, all of Oak Street, the Highland/Lexington/Concord neighborhoods, and Union Street at 140.
Once the fireworks conclude traffic all traffic leaving the High School, Horace Mann, Oak Street, and ECDC will be directed towards Oak Street and Pond Street. No traffic will be allowed towards the common. Traffic coming from the ice rink will be directed towards 140.
There will be cones and saw horses out blocking roads. Just so we’re all on the same page again, if the road looks blocked…it’s probably blocked. Don’t drive around it, don’t move the barriers, and don’t run over the cones.
Other than that you can expect a FPD and FFD presence at the event. If you need anything give us a call or flag us down. We’ll see you tomorrow!
Lastly…there is no rain date for the fireworks!

Franklin TV: Go Fourth, and Celebrate!

May the Fourth Be With You!

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 06/30/2024

If there’s a town in America that knows how to party on our nation’s birthday, it’s us, right here in Franklin. From July 3 through July 7, we party, party, and party. How does this huge party come together? We thank the Franklin July 4th Coalition.

For a complete schedule of events and festivities, visit www.franklin4th.com

Hint: It’s a lot.
Franklin TV: Go Fourth, and Celebrate!
Go Fourth, and Celebrate!

We’ll do our best to cover it all on Franklin.TV.

It’s a lot of music - for 5 straight days. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to the Common. It’s a lot of decadent food, rides, amusements, and festivities. It’s a lot of fireworks – starting at 10 pm, Saturday night at the high school.
All in, it’s a lot of fun.

That said, It also takes a lot of planning, work and funding. Private funding – from generous sponsors and individual donations.

While you’re visiting their website to plan your own family activities on the Fourth, consider making a donation. Big or small, it all helps to ensure that next year, America’s birthday party can continue.

I’ll have a corn dog and funnel cake, please.

The Fourth of July: 2024 - Franklin, MA featured in listing from Census

via the Census Bureau:

"On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As we celebrate this Independence Day, we reflect on how our Founding Fathers enshrined in our Constitution the importance of data as a vital tool for measuring America.

Most of the following facts are possible thanks to responses to U.S. Census Bureau censuses and surveys. We appreciate the public’s cooperation as we continuously measure our people, places and economy. "

Franklin Democratic Town Committee sends "thank you" to Joe & Paul

The Franklin Democratic Town Committee wishes to publicly acknowledge and thank Joe Carmignani and Paul Kortick of the July 4th Coalition for their time, effort, and expertise in planning, executing, and pulling off a successful 4th of July extravaganza, again.

This town wide celebration offers many civic groups in town the opportunity to raise funds for their causes.  It is our biggest and only fund raiser for the year.  There is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into this event and we appreciate all that the 4th of July Coalition does for our town.

If you have not donated, yet, you can still do so:  www.franklin4th.com
