The faculty and staff of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS), located in Franklin, Massachusetts, are pleased to announce that alumni scholarship applications for alumni who are graduating from high school this year are now available. This scholarship is designed for Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School graduates who have displayed academic achievement, a commitment to serving others, and continued to demonstrate virtuous behavior since graduating from BFCCPS.  Eligible students would have been a member of the BFCCPS Grade Eight class of 2018.

 Applicants must be a BFCCPS graduate who attended BFCCPS for a minimum of 3 years,  a graduating high school senior who will be entering their first year of post-secondary education and available to attend the BFCCPS 8th grade graduation in June where the scholarship will be awarded. 

The scholarship application is posted on the school's website at www.bfccps.org and to the BFCCPS Alumni Facebook page.  The application deadline is March 28, 2022. 

BFCCPS is a regional public charter school for students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight.  Founded in 1995, BFCCPS is one of the oldest and most successful charter schools in the state of Massachusetts. 

The school provides a well-rounded, rigorous academic program designed to educate the whole child providing yearlong courses in art, music, languages, technology, and physical education. The school's integrated character education, community service, and strong parent partnerships, have led to local, state and national recognition. BFCCPS Music School Teacher to Participate in the Rose Parade

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School is excited to announce that Emily Warren, our Grade Six through Eight music teacher will be participating in the Rose Parade as a member of Saluting America's Band Directors. Miss Warren applied for the program and was selected to participate in the marching band and will represent Massachusetts and will be playing the baritone.

This is a marching band made up of 275+ band directors from all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. It is the first time in Rose Parade history that a performing group is going to be both a float AND a marching band (all other groups have been either a float or a band) and it's the first marching band of its kind in history.

We are thrilled to see Miss Warren participating in this band which is a tribute to band directors across the country and will pay tribute to the exceptional instruction, character development and inspiration provided by music educators everywhere. We hope you will tune in to watch and cheer her on! The show will air on New Year's Day morning on ABC, NBC, Hallmark Channel, and Univision starting at 11 AM EST. Saluting America's Band Directors is expected to air in the second half of the parade (in other words, the second hour of the broadcast) and the group will be announced on TV before they perform.

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS), located in Franklin, Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting applications for the upcoming 20221-2023 school year.  BFCCPS is a regional public charter school for students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight.  Founded in 1995, BFCCPS is one of the oldest and most successful charter schools in the state of Massachusetts. 

Siblings of currently enrolled students will have priority enrollment status; thereafter applicants from all 13 communities in the school's district will have an equal chance at securing a spot for their child through the annual enrollment lottery to be held on March 3, 2022.  Applicants from outside of the region (who reside within the state of Massachusetts) will be eligible for enrollment should additional spaces remain after all sibling and regional applicants have been placed.  

For the 2022-2023 school year 96 spaces will be offered for Kindergarten and students at all other grade levels will receive a waiting list number.  Offers for Grades One through Eight would be contingent upon currently enrolled students electing not to return next year. As a public school, there is no tuition to pay if an applicant receives an offer of enrollment during the upcoming lottery.

Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School

During the week of November 29, 2021, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School. The Office of Public School Monitoring reviews each district and charter school every three years to monitor compliance with federal and state special education and civil rights regulations. Areas of review related to special education include student assessments, determination of eligibility, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team process, and IEP development and implementation. Areas of review related to civil rights include bullying, student discipline, physical restraint, and equal access to school programs for all students. 

Parent outreach is an important part of the review process. The review chairperson from the Office of Public School Monitoring will send all parents of students with disabilities an online survey that focuses on key areas of their child's special education program. Survey results will contribute to the development of a report. During the review, the Office of Public School Monitoring will interview the chairperson(s) of the district's Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC). Other activities may include interviews of district staff and administrators, reviews of student records. 

Parents and other individuals may call Corey Steinman, Public School Monitoring Chairperson, at (781) 338-3742 to request a telephone interview. If an individual requires an accommodation, such as translation, to participate in an interview, the Department will make the necessary arrangements.

Within approximately 60 business days after the review, the review chairperson will provide the district with a report with information about areas in which the district meets or exceeds regulatory requirements and areas in which the district requires assistance to correct or improve practices. The public will be able to access the report at http://www.doe.mass.edu/psm/tfm/reports/.

BFCCPS celebrate retirement of Madame Malouf

More than 100 Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS) alumni and parents celebrated the retirement of their French teacher, Madame Mireille Malouf. 

After 13 years teaching the French language Madame Malouf retired. On Friday evening July 8, 2021, the Franklin community of past BFCCPS students celebrated the retirement of their French teacher. 

"Education starts at home" says Madame Malouf. In 2017, she was recognized as a Chevalier (Knight) in the Order of the French Academic Palms for her outstanding service and active expansion of French education and culture.

“Madame Malouf has inspired me” was a sentiment expressed by all the students. They took the time to show their gratitude for the gift of French language that Madame Malouf shared with them. Madame Malouf and her husband Dale were touched to meet and hear from all the wonderful students she taught. Madame Malouf signed off saying "I am honored to have taught those young men and women." 

The event was organized by KP Sompally, Town Council candidate in 2020.

"In a traditional year, BFCCPS hosts information sessions so that interested families can meet us in person, learn more about the school and have a building tour.  As a result of the continuing health crisis, in person meetings will not be possible this year so we’ve adjusted our plans accordingly.

This year, we have arranged for videos featuring our staff, parents, teachers and even a BFCCPS alumna to help you learn more about the BFCCPS Experience. While these videos can’t truly replicate our traditional face to face events we hope that our enthusiasm for the school is evident.

BFCCPS to continue their "phased-in to hybrid learning plan"

Dear BFCCPS Community, 

This week BFCCPS started to welcome back our Sixth Grade students who are participating in hybrid learning. Our Seventh and Eighth Grade students who are participating in hybrid learning will phase-in starting on December 3.  

You may have recently read that the Governor and the DESE have encouraged schools to consider full-in person education. However, we have determined that at this time, BFCCPS can not maintain the outlined safety protocols and procedures for health and safety in a traditional full class size. The BFCCPS Administration has recommended, and the Board has agreed, that we will continue with our phased-in to hybrid learning plan. We will continue to monitor the local and state COVID trends as significant increases may lead us to consider full remote learning for all students. We are incredibly proud of the work that the BFCCPS Community has done to implement our phased in return, and believe that this plan is our best opportunity to provide an in person educational model while maintaining safety protocols and procedures. This plan is designed to keep our faculty, staff, students and families as safe as possible during this unprecedented pandemic.   

We will plan to keep students in their current homeroom and hybrid/Remote Academy placements. If you are the parent or guardian of a student in Kindergarten through Grade Five and would like to request a change of instructional model starting in January through the end of the school year, please fill out this form. The deadline to place this request is Friday, December 4th. Please note that a change of instructional model may result in your child being assigned to a different homeroom teacher. We can not accept requests for specific in-person days for students moving from the Remote Academy into hybrid learning.   Please also note that a transfer may take several weeks as any movement may have significant implications for staffing and transportation.

New Student Travel Policy & Upcoming Holidays: The Board of Trustees has voted at the November meeting to approve a new policy titled Student Travel Under Mass Travel Order 45 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

The holiday season is rapidly approaching and we have been discussing implications with respect to the Massachusetts Travel Order.  We recognize that it is likely that staff and families may be travelling out of state, or entertaining out of state guests.  

It is important to recognize that in accordance with the Massachusetts Travel Order, and the BFCCPS Daily Attestation, any students, faculty or staff who are travelling outside of the U.S or to a state deemed high risk must quarantine for 14 days or produce a negative COVID-19 test result before returning to in-person education. Please note that if a student is enrolled in hybrid instruction and is required to quarantine as a result of travel, BFCCPS will not be able to accommodate requests for full remote learning during their self-quarantine. Students will be eligible to participate in their regularly scheduled remote learning and can complete available asynchronous learning opportunities. 

Full Remote Learning Days Scheduled: In order to create an opportunity for staff, faculty and families to celebrate the holidays with their families; the Board of Trustees has voted to move November 30th, December 1st, January 4 and January 5th to full remote days. This adjustment to the calendar is designed to provide families and staff the opportunity to safely celebrate the holidays (if they so choose), travel home and secure a negative test result before returning to school.

"In an effort to reduce the number of staff cuts while adding new positions to areas of increased need, the School Committee voted Tuesday in favor of a $1.5 million override to its proposed fiscal 2021 budget.

A major factor, according to Superintendent Peter Marano, is a “staggering” decrease in the amount of money reimbursed by the state for what the district pays toward charter school education at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter School in Franklin.

“The reason why this year is different (than the last five years) is because we’ve basically taken a $2 million hit from the increase in the charter school, and that steep decrease in funding ... is basically just the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said committee member Mark Flannery.

As part of a $29.8 million proposed budget, the School Committee unanimously approved the $1.5 million override, which would cost the average homeowner about $160 a year, said Marano. That equals to $40 per quarter, said committee Chairman Michael J. Reed Jr., based on the average home value of about $325,000."

In the News: possible change to housing zoning removing 2/3 majority; BFCCPS applications open

"Gov. Charlie Baker’s proposal to make zoning changes easier at the local level is one step closer to passage after the Housing Committee voted to advance it alongside 20 other bills aimed at generating new housing production.

The Housing Committee voted 16-1 in a poll that concluded Thursday afternoon to favorably report out Baker’s bill, according to a copy of the results acquired by the News Service. The Boston Globe first reported Wednesday that the poll was underway.

All 20 other bills, which range from a proposal to establish a housing production task force to one that would set a statewide housing production goal, also advanced with only one dissenting vote. State Rep. David DeCoste, R-Norwell, voted against each bill, while state Sen. Patrick O’Connor, R-Weymouth, reserved his rights on some votes.

The legislation would lower the local voting threshold needed for zoning changes from a two-thirds majority to a simple majority, a difference that Baker and supporters argue would allow more projects to get approved rather than fail on a 3-2 City Council vote or with only 55% backing."

Ribbon Ceremony at the New Home of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School - Aug 10

The Benjamin Franklin Educational Foundation (BFEF) hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new home of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS) which is now located at 500 Financial Park in Franklin. The new 72,000 square foot facility will open to 708 incoming students on Tuesday, September 3rd for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Benjamin Franklin Educational Foundation secured funding for the new school primarily through a $24,550,000 tax-exempt bond issued by MassDevelopment and purchased by Citizens Bank with participation by HarborOne Bank, Websterfive Bank and Radius Bank. The bond financing was supplemented with a $2,000,000 loan provided by The Property and Casualty Initiative. Project management of the new facility was provided by Daedalus Projects, Inc. and the building was designed by the Boston based architectural firm Arrowstreet, Inc.

Donald Tappin, President of the BFEF welcomed attendees to the event and thanked the members of the BFEF with a special focus on the leadership team who managed the expansion project with both tenacity and perseverance. Tappin shared that ”The foundation board is extremely excited to see what the future holds for

BFCCPS. We are building upon the school’s already proud heritage. Having a home of its own offers limitless possibilities for their students, faculty and staff.” During the event, Gerald Cimmino the Treasurer of the BFEF announced that the construction of the school’s gymnasium is slated to begin in October, 2019 with completion of the project expected in the spring of 2020.

Upon the momentous occasion of the school’s opening, Mrs. Heather Zolnowski, the Executive Director of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter School expressed her sincere gratitude to the volunteer members of the project’s leadership team for the time, energy and determination they poured into this project. 

“This building affords us the ability to strengthen our academic program, to build hands on experiences into our academic goals and objectives, and to provide after hours programming to support our students and families. This new property will allow us to strengthen the culture we have built over the last 24 years. I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who had a part in bringing this dream to fruition.”

Special awards were issued to Roger Stone, Senior Vice President at Citizens Bank as well as the Tappin and Cimmino families for their extraordinary dedication to the school over the last seven years of the expansion project.

Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting invited guests received guided tours of the facility led by members of the Educational Foundation, and school board, as well as school administration.

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School opened in 1995 and is one of the original 13 Charter Schools in the state of Massachusetts. Priority in the school's annual enrollment lottery is given first to siblings of current students, then to residents of Bellingham, Blackstone, Franklin, Holliston, Hopedale, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Millis, Millville, Norfolk, Plainville, Upton, Walpole, and Wrentham.

The rigorous educational program at BFCCPS offers a strategic partnership with parents, foreign language instruction, commitment to arts education, character education, and community service activities.

For the 2019-2020 academic year, BFCCPS has increased enrollment from 50 students to 92 students per grade in grades Kindergarten through grade five. Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will go live on November 1, 2019.

The Franklin Police Department has issued a press release related to suspicious activity involving an encounter between a juvenile and a stranger on Oak Street. We encourage you to hold a family discussion regarding personal safety and we ask that you have a heightened awareness of safety precautions for your children at this time.
