From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

In the News: Franklin's Liberatore on top team; Governor will let Legislature deal with marijuana sales tax

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"A student cybersecurity team from MassBay Community College placed fourth at the National Cyber League 2016 Competition. The seven-member student team from MassBay, called the Segfault, was ranked fourth out of 144 teams nationwide, and included a Franklin resident.
The team consisted of Andrew Liberatore, of Franklin, as well as Paul Buonopane, David Dew, Chester Moses, Timothy Ferguson, Corey Skinner and Fred Dolan.
The students have been working together since the beginning of the fall 2016 semester and have competed in the preseason, regular season and postseason of the National Cyber League competition. The competition is held online in a cloud-based environment, where students compete to solve real problems. The MassBay team was given problems to solve that replicate what it might face in the real world if its company fell victim to hackers. The team dissected the problems to find solutions, which included downloading files, decryption to view passwords and analyzing information on the attack."

"Gov. Charlie Baker couldn't quite bring himself on Monday to say he would support a higher tax rate on retail marijuana sales, but he didn't rule it out either.
"I'm going to let the Legislature kick this one around a little, " Baker said during his monthly appearance on WGBH's "Boston Public Radio" show. "No, no, no, no," he added as clarification when host Jim Braude brought up a possible veto threat.
Several prominent Democrats, including Treasurer Deborah Goldberg and Senate President Stanley Rosenberg, have been open with their belief that the 3.75 percent retail sales tax on pot is too low, and will be up for debate when the Legislature considers changes in the new year to the legalization law that went into effect last Thursday.
The ballot law stipulated a 3.75 percent excise tax on marijuana that would be added to the state's 6.25 percent sales tax, effectively taxing pot at 10 percent to start. Cities and towns have the ability to add an additional sales tax of up to 2 percent on top of that."

In the News: white fox "Frankie"; college enrollment declining

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"A rare white fox was captured Thursday in Franklin after spending the last few weeks visiting the yards of various homes near the state forest.
The gregarious vixen, with soft streaks of red and black in her fur and black-tipped ears, was taken in by the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife after she was caught in cooperation with the Franklin animal control department. The capture followed a sighting reported to the agency Thursday morning.
Dave Wattles, a black bear and furbearer biologist with the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, said the fox showed no indications of being rabid, though she has been vaccinated."

"Since hitting a peak in 2013, enrollment at Massachusetts public colleges and universities has decreased for the third consecutive year, posing challenges that education leaders are working to address.
"This was predictable. All you had to do was go back 17, 18, 19 years ago and look at birth rates," state Higher Education Commissioner Carlos Santiago said. "We knew it was coming … But we don't want to just sit back and let those demographic trends take shape."
After more than a decade of growth, public undergraduate enrollment in Massachusetts has declined by 10,744, or 5.5 percent, since 2013. There are an estimated 186,103 undergraduate students on public campuses in Massachusetts for the fall 2016 semester."

Thriving at College

Ok – you got in!  You have the dorm room, supplies and some new clothes. You'll be leaving pretty soon to take the next huge step in your life. For many teens, this is a time filled with excitement but also anxiousness and uncertainty, and certain skills need to be developed in order to overcome these fears and succeed that very first weekend and beyond.

Join us on Tuesday evenings, August 9th and August 16th, for two powerful workshops which will focus on solutions for some of the hurdles both teens and parents often face at the beginning of the college experience. The Thriving in College: Your First Weekend and Beyond workshop series is sponsored by the Hockomock Area YMCA Bernon Family Branch and Dean College, with support from State Representative Jeffrey Roy, the Franklin Public Schools, Community Impact, New Hope, Riverside Trauma Center and the S.A.F.E. Coalition.

SAFE Golf Tournament

A "best ball" golf tournament to benefit the S.A.F.E. Coalition will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22 at the Franklin Country Club.

The tournament will support the outreach programs of the S.A.F.E. Coalition in Franklin, Medway, Milford and surrounding communities in Norfolk and Worcester Counties. It will also include a barbecue lunch and awards.

Registration is now open at safecoalitionma.com, and costs $150 per person and $600 for a foursome.

Ongoing S.A.F.E. programs include education, treatment options, and coping mechanisms for those affected by Substance Use Disorders. Our goals are to empower those affected, including their families, with the tools necessary to succeed on their journey to recovery.

Our Drop-In Centers provide a gateway to professional resources including medical and psychological needs, referrals to outpatient counseling, medical detoxification, in/outpatient rehabilitation programs and other treatment modalities including Healing Hearts, Learn to Cope and Community of Hope.

The Chiefs Roundtable provides a forum for interaction and support of our first responders while SOAR supports treatment for inmates and those involved in the judicial system.

Town Councilor Robert Dellorco, a member of the coalition, said the tournament is intended to help keep the group's "drop-in" centers - in which multiple services for addicts are brought under one roof - functioning.

"We had a grant but, in the future, we will need to fundraise," he said.

In addition to the tournament, the day will feature a barbecue lunch, a silent auction and awards, Dellorco said. And, SAFE is aggressively seeking sponsors for the new event.

"We have a lot of sponsors already, but we're looking to get as many sponsorships as we possibly can," he said.

Those interested in sponsoring the tournament may contact Dellorco at 774-571-5530. The S.A.F.E. Coalition of MA is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax deductible.

SAFE is also hoping as many golfers as possible register for the tournament. Dellorco said the group's target is 144 golfers, and it is looking to get the word out quickly, as the event is coming up soon.

You can view the Milford Daily News report on the tournament by clicking here.

In the News: workshop to address college stress, salary data research request struggles

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Citing a desire to lower stress among soon-to-be college students, several local organizations are collaborating on new college transition workshops.
The sessions - set to take place Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 - will be free to the public, and are the product of a partnership between the Hockomock Area YMCA, Dean College, Franklin public schools, the SAFE Coalition, Community Impact, New Hope and state Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, among others. Both workshops will take place in the Franklin High School lecture hall, and will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
School Committee member Anne Bergen, who also sits on the YMCA's Board of Managers, said the workshops were designed to meet a perceived need in the about-to-go-to-college group."

"Only two school districts in the area have complied with a researcher's statewide records request for the salaries of teachers and administrators broken down by gender.
The request, filed by Brigham Young University researcher Joseph Price, is the subject of a recent statewide order from Shawn Williams, supervisor of records. Every district that did not respond, according to the July 13 order, must do so and undergo training in Public Record Law.
Most area districts didn't respond. Some which did respond requested anywhere from $100 to almost $3,000 to provide the data.
Price's request was for salary data from 1995 to 2016, divided by gender, job title, education and experience. The data was intended to bolster a national study of the gender pay gap among educators."

Hockomock Y & Dean College Announce College Transition Free Workshops - Aug 9, 16

Ok – you got in! You have the dorm room, supplies and some new clothes. You’ll be leaving pretty soon to take the next huge step in your life.

Coalition.

The topics covered during the workshops include, but are not limited to:

  • Separating from family, lifelong friends, boyfriend/girlfriend
  • Creating new friendships
  • Academic pressure
  • Social pressure

The main focus of these two workshops will be how to stay strong, healthy and confident throughout your college years. Parents are invited to participate as well; the workshops will be structured so that parents and prospective college students will be in separate break-out sessions run by counselors, experienced college officials, college students and recent graduates who will share their experiences, advice and wisdom to help everyone get through the first few weeks and months (and beyond)!

"We are aiming to make that transition from high school to college far less stressful for our teens and their parents," said State Representative Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin). "We know that powerful things happen when community organizations and people come together and support each other, and these workshops are yet another example. Join us on August 9 and 16 to help make your teen's journey this fall less daunting."

“Going off to college elicits so many emotions: excitement, anxiety and most often some combination of both. We do a great job of helping teens get into college, but we want them to succeed once they arrive. We want teens to realize that if they are feeling anxious, they are not alone in feeling that way. The more our young people are prepared for the challenges they may face, the more positive college experience they will have, from the first weekend and beyond,” said Dr. Anne Bergen, retired educator, host of “It Takes a Village: Raising Resilient Kids in Today’s World” and volunteer on the Bernon Family Branch YMCA’s Board of Managers.

“The transition to college can be very challenging for new students and their families. The first few weeks and months can be an emotional roller coaster,” said Cindy Kozil, Vice President of Enrollment & Retention at Dean College. “Many parents ask us how they can best support their son/daughter during this transition. We offer specific recommendations, strategies and tips to make the experience easier, less stressful and more enjoyable for all involved.”

These workshops are free and open to the public. We encourage all students (and their parents) just beginning college and anyone seeking more information about the college experience to attend.

Where: Franklin High School, Lecture Hall, 218 Oak Street, Franklin, MA
When: August 9 and 16 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Pre-registration is encouraged, and all those who pre-register and attend will be eligible to win a $100.00 gift card.
To preregister visit https://trinexum.com/HUB/Hockomock/Program/ProgramEnrollment and enter in the keyword search: Thriving in College.

These workshops are part of the Teen Transitions program. The Hockomock Area YMCA’s Bernon Family Branch in Franklin and Dean College have joined forces to provide mentoring and guidance to young adults currently enrolled in high school. Teen Transitions is an innovative approach that pulls together professionals and industry experts living and working in our community to volunteer their time presenting tips and best practices.
