Library News
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Franklin Public Library is currently closed to the public. Curbside Pickup is available Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the vestibule of the entrance at the top of the parking lot ramp. Library Staff are available by phone (508-520-4941) and email (frkill@minlib.net) Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday hours are not available at this time.
The Library will be closed and Curbside Pickup will not be available on Monday, February 15 for Presidents Day.
No donations are being accepted at this time. Please do not place them in the return bins or outside the building.

In the email subject line, in all caps, type: CURBSIDE PRINTING
Staff members cannot alter your print job in any way prior to printing. Please carefully check the print preview option on your computer or personal device before submitting our document.
Privacy information: Please do not send print jobs that contain private or sensitive information. Your document will be placed in an envelope, but it will be left for pickup in the Curbside Pickup area – this area is open to the general public.

Karlus Trapp's delightful, educational, and entertaining presentation "The Roots of Black Music in America" is a 100 year journey back through time to hear, experience anew, and learn about the music of America's black musical giants. It is a joyful show that encourages and comes alive through audience participation and interaction with singing, dancing, call and response and percussion playing. Take-And-Make Craft for Adults: Embroidery Kit
In a collaboration with the Franklin Mill Store, the Franklin Public Library is now offering Take-And-Make craft kits for adults! The project for January is embroidery kits. The embroidery kits include everything you need to create your own hand embroidered hoop. The pattern design is pre-printed on 100% cotton fabric, so there's no need for transferring or tracing. Just pop the fabric in the hoop, thread your needle, and start stitching!
These make easy and wonderful gifts. Embroidery is a great way to slow down, get cozy, and get crafty. Each kit contains: pre-printed (in color) fabric pattern, coordinating embroidery floss, needle, wooden hoop(s), full color card with image on front and stitching notes on back, a 'getting started with hand embroidery' guide and instructional how-to for basic stitches. The finished design is sized to fit nicely in a 6" hoop.

The book for discussion is Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid.
Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix's desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other. With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," the complicated reality of being a grown up, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

The Franklin Public Library is now offering Curbside Printing! Library staff will now print black and white documents up to ten pages in length free of charge. Send your file to frkill@minlib.net . Your document will be printed and placed in a sealed envelope for your privacy. Once you have been notified that your document is ready, pick it up under your last name on the Cubside Pickup carts in the glass vestibule at the top of the parking lot ramp. For documents over ten pages or in color, please email frkill@minlib.net for further information.

Kitchen Table Art Workshop: Secret Pockets, Sunday, December 6, 3:00 p.m.
Got a secret? Secret Pockets are collage card creations that become secret pockets for more images, messages, quotes, and treasures, keepsakes and whatever else you might like. They can be created as intuition or inspiration cards, as mini-diaries, or artists' trading cards – the possibilities are endless. This workshop is for adult and young adult artists and non-artists, no experience needed. Getting outdoors can be exciting and challenging. For some, it's especially challenging. You, or those you love, may have health and/or mobility issues that preclude venturing onto rocky or rooty trails. Your children may have special needs. You may have toddlers, or older parents who can no longer venture onto the demanding trails they used to.
If you are like many these days, you are spending a lot more time outdoors. Getting out on trails has taken on new appeal. But do you worry about finding a safe place to park when you consider visiting a local trail? What are the best clothes to wear? Things to bring with you? Regardless of your challenges, the outdoors is not off-limits.

You'll learn how to discover Easy Walks when visiting a new area, find new places to walk nearby as well, and so much more. Franklin Public Library Book Club, Tuesday, December 22, 7:00 p.m.
The book for discussion is Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah.
Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. "Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday afternoon signed a pair of bills that will update the state’s approach to mosquito control and allow restaurants to sell sealed containers of mixed drinks with their takeout and delivery food orders.
Lawmakers sent Baker those two bills on Thursday, along with a $1 billion supplemental budget that focuses on spending related to the state’s COVID-19 response. That spending bill (H 4808) remains on Baker’s desk, and he has until Sunday to act on it.
“While many mom and pop establishments have been able to slowly reopen in recent weeks, they still face significant challenges in their efforts to retain employees and pay their bills,” said State Sen. Diana DiZoglio, who filed the legislation. “According to our local, family owned and operated restaurants, these measures could help them generate thousands of dollars a month and would greatly assist them in paying utility bills and rent.”
The new to-go cocktails law (S 2812) is aimed at helping restaurants generate additional revenue while their operations are restricted amid the COVID-19 crisis. It follows an April law that allowed restaurants to sell beer and wine alongside takeout and delivery, and restaurants will now be able to sell limited quantities of beer, wine and mixed drinks for off-premises consumption through February 2021 or until the COVID-19 state of emergency is lifted, whichever comes later."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)
"For years, Massachusetts police chiefs say, they’ve been ignored by state lawmakers. Now, police say legislators are threatening their safety - and the safety of the public — through proposed police reform measures.
“Law enforcement in Massachusetts is under attack by a liberal element that wants to bring shame (to police officers) that none of us understand,” said Hampden Police Chief Jeff Farnsworth, president of the Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association, on Tuesday. Massachusetts police have been leading the way in model police standards in the United States for years – but those efforts haven’t been acknowledged by legislators, he said.
“As leaders, we can stand here today and tell you, the legislation will not make us safer,” Farnsworth said.
Farnsworth was joined by nearly 100 of the state’s 351 police chiefs Tuesday morning in Framingham to criticize two police reform bills that were recently moved by the Senate and House. The chiefs urged Gov. "Nearly every library has needed to similarly adapt to changing demands - particularly in children’s departments.
Summer reading and summer programming helps serve as vital educational supplements to maintain learning out of school, Caleigh Keating, youth services librarian at the Franklin Town Library, said. Children’s departments are often one of the busiest sections of the library and serve a vital role in the community.
As a result, Franklin has begun offering more virtual events than ever before, such as storytime sessions, book clubs, and “Dungeons and Dragons” sessions, and has started promoting novel software, such as Beanstack, to track reading logs. Additionally, the Franklin Town Library has sent weekly packets with activities including arts and crafts and STEAM projects so children can continue learning at home.
Though she misses seeing her patrons, Keating said offering more online events has helped the library better fit parent schedules, encouraging increased family participation."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)
