GoFundMe: A service dog for PJ

"Our son PJ has an extensive medical history. He used to stop breathing and he would turn fluorescent blue. We found out when he was 9 months old that he needed brain surgery for a malformation of his brain. This surgery saved PJ's life.

PJ also has a cleft in his Larynx that causes him to aspirate. He has a paralyzed vocal chord, and is completely non verbal. PJ was diagnosed with Autism just shy of his third birthday. He also has PICA disorder, which causes him to want to ingest non edible materials, such as metal, glass, wood chips, rocks etc.

PJ has truly had a difficult beginning. But PJ is a beautiful, sweet, fearless little boy. He started about a year ago at a special school for children with autism and has really made some great progress. Since being there we have seen more of his personality blossoming and his communication has increased. He is now able to use a special ipad to help him communicate his wants and needs. This school has helped PJ in so many ways. He has become a happier little boy.

However as he has gotten older/bigger our day to day lives have gotten more challenging for our family and more dangerous for PJ. He is a runner, and has no safety skills as far as traffic and a fetish for any water he can find. Even though he is making some progress we believe there is still more we can do to help him live the best life he can, to help him with his life skills and day to day activities.

Having done some research on Autism Service Dogs, we have discovered Ry-Con, an Organization in Raleigh NC, that breeds and trains service dog specifically for Autism. Mark Mathis founded this non profit Organization after training a Briard for his own son who is also diagnosed with autism. We have recently gone down to visit Mark and meet some service dogs in training and it was AMAZING!!

Our son PJ blossomed before our eyes. He made a very magical connection with one dog in particular and we saw a side of PJ that we have never seen before. He was connecting with this dog on a level I never could have imagined. He was seeking him out for interaction. Looking for him as he would try to run towards the road and responding when this dog would herd him back towards the safety of the interior of the yard. PJ was in love with an animal for the first time in his life.

This special dog laid with PJ in a bed for a rest and PJ was hooked. He was giving love like we have never seen him do. We are sold on the wonderful things this animal can help him with. such as:

  • Prevent him from running and wandering into dangerous situations
  • Enhance his current therapies
  • Help with his sleep patterns
  • Ease his anxiety in new or difficult situations
  • Allow for some independence at home and when in public
  • Engagement and interactions with his peers
  • Keep him from ingesting dangerous non edibles

Please consider making a donation.  https://www.gofundme.com/a-service-dog-for-pj

Please also visit Ry-Con Briard Service Dogs website or Facebook page to learn more about the Briard Breed and Autism Service Dogs.

Thank you so much for your consideration."

“He had the soul of a warrior and the heart of a lion"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The Franklin Police lost one of their own on Tuesday night when 3-year-old police dog Axe died during emergency surgery after falling ill.
As a puppy Axe began training with Officer Michael Gilboy in July 2014. Together, the duo tackled drug busts, missing person searches and of course walks through the park to make residents smile.
Shortly after he began training, Axe was instrumental in finding an unconscious man in Bellingham who had been reported missing."

License your Dog today. New easy online registration!

ViewPoint Cloud is the vendor whose software is being used by the Town of Franklin for their online dog licenses and future expansion to include other online transactions. ViewPoint published this article on their company blog about the work they are doing with Franklin.

"Franklin’s vision for customer-service means rising to meet the expectations of residents in a digital age. While staff at the counters are friendly and knowledgeable, Town Hall is only open from 8am-4pm. To Hellen, providing better government services looks a lot more like what you’d expect from Google or Amazon.
“The world’s operating in a global, 24/7 environment, and people are conducting business at all hours of the day. My hope is in the very short-term we can transition our little place in the world, Franklin, MA, into a 24/7 storefront. We want people to expect that out of government, and we want to deliver on it. When someone says, ‘oh shoot I need to license my dog and today’s the deadline,’ we want that service to be a Google search away. We want to be a one stop shop for people’s questions and services,” explains Hellen.
With this idea in mind, Hellen and other department heads agreed that updating their permitting system was an important step in providing citizens with greater access to government services.

2017 Dog Licensing Season Begins!

"When the ball drops to ring in a New Year, it is also a reminder that annual dog licensing season also begins.

This year, I am very excited to announce a pilot initiative to allow residents to license your dog online.

We hope you find the new cloud-based software easy to use. You can license your dog at your convenience, 24-7, without ever making a trip to the Municipal Building. Simply register online and our office will send you your loved one’s dog tags in the mail.

Please visit our new site to register you dog:
https://franklinma.viewpointcloud.com/

Residents may also find the registration center on the Online Payments section of the Town’s website at www.franklinma.gov

Our office reminds dog owners that licensing your dog is due by April 1st. After April 1st, a late fee will be assessed. In addition to the late fee, if your dog is found to have not been registered at all, there is a $100 fine, per state law.

You are also required to send a rabies certificate and to provide your Vet's information to allow us to communicate better with them on rabies information and expiration.

2017 Fee Schedule:

Dog Licensing Registration:

  • Before April 1st (spayed/neutered) = $20.00
  • Before April 1st (not spayed/neutered) = $30.00
  • After April 1st (Late dog registration fee, spayed/neutered) = $50.00
  • After April 1st (Late dog registration fee, not spayed/neutered) = $60.00

By using this online service, we will also email you notification of next year's dog licensing as well.

Let us do most of the work for you so you can spend more time with your pets. Register today!
Please call the office at (508) 520-4900 with any questions.

And, yes, the Town Clerk still accepts applications via mail and personally in the office. Forms will be sent out in the upcoming census mailing in January. Do not hesitate to stop in to register your dog.

I wish everyone a very happy and safe New Year’s weekend."

Updated fee schedule - dog license renewals coming via online transaction in January 2017

"Effective January 1, 2017, the Town of Franklin will update its fee schedule for all service fees. Please see the attached fee schedule for details. If you have any questions, please call the Administrator's Office at 508-520-4949.

The Town of Franklin had not done a comprehensive analysis of the fee schedule in almost twenty years. Based off customer and staff feedback, the Town has streamlined the fee system and accurately capture the cost of doing business. Overall, we have eliminated 116 fee's or fee categories that were outdated, unnecessary, duplicative or just simply needed to be updated to reflect current day laws and town operations.

The Town is also investing in new software and technology to assist in better customer service. Beginning on January 1, 2017, a pilot program will begin in the Town Clerk's Office for dog licensing. The Town has invested in a cloud based company, Viewpoint, to allow residents to establish an online account with the Town to register their dogs, submit rabies certificates, veterinary information and receive email notifications for renewal dates and deadlines. We hope this new software is a better convenience to our residents.

Please visit www.franklinma.gov in January to license your dog. You will receive your dog tags in the mail. No trips to Town Hall are necessary. If this software is successful, we will begin expanding the services to other town departments in the coming years for building permits, conservation permits, liquor licenses, tax payments and much more. Our goal is to allow residents to establish an online account, like and Amazon.com, to be able to conduct your business with town government 24-7-365 at your convenience, during your busy schedules. We welcome any feedback!

We have also updated and modernized the Community Assistance Program to assist qualifying residents of certain incomes to apply for discounts on their water, sewer, and trash bills. Discounts are also available for Recreation Department programs. Please contact the DPW or Recreation Department for specific details on their programs and offerings. We hope these programs can offer modest assistance to allow everyone to thrive in Franklin and participate in our vast Recreation programs."

The new listing of Municipal Service fees can be found here

Bubbles & Bark!

Saturday, December 3
2-5 PM
Never Drink Ordinary!
So much more than a wine tasting....
What is Bubbles and Bark? Well....

It's a wine and spirits tasting. We'll have Champagne, sparkling wines, and holiday-worthy reds. All our favorite people will be here. Charlie Tower, aka 'Old Man Whisky', will be pouring exquisite malts from the Lost Distillery Project. John Grange is bringing Laurent Perrier Brut, Extra Brut, and Rose (swoon!). Dave Catania is rolling out homemade eggnog and some killer Cognac. The inimitable Bob Gifford has Le Mesnil and Cava. Rich has Besserat and Nebbiolo. Plus Coole Swan, Deutz Champagne, and much, much more.

It's a party. The year is wrapping up, and we'd like to celebrate with our other favorite people-our fabulous customers and friends. Because parties need food, we have invited Snappy Dogs. I'm planning on eating at least 3. You probably should, too. Bring a little cash for raffle tickets and Snappy Dogs; at this time of year, they are a cash-only biz.

It's important. Forever Home Rescue has rescued and re-homed over 1,500 homeless and unwanted dogs. Their adoption fees cover only a fraction of the work they do; for the rest, they depend on donations from generous people like yourself. Every dog deserves a loving home. Won't you join us?

Tickets, $10, are a 100% donation to FHR. Raffle tickets will be available, also a 100% donation. Pour Richard's will also donate a portion of our sales.
Thank you for trusting us with your beverage business. Please share this email with friends who are interested in delicious wine, beer, and spirits. (Keeping all the good stuff for yourself is bad karma.)

Cheers!
