Senate President Karen Spilka’s Health and Wellness Fair Broadens to Serve Active Seniors and Their Families

Return to in-person fair will include fun and informative activities for residents aged 55+

State Senate President Karen E. Spilka's annual health and wellness fair returns to an in-person format with a revised name, a broadened focus that includes active older adults, a streamlined registration process, and an invitation for younger generations to accompany older family members to the event slated for October 22, 2022.

Called the Senior Health & Wellness Fair since its 2011 inception, the event has been renamed Senate President Spilka's 55+ Fair: Health and Wellness for Active Agers and Those Who Love Them. The popular event, open to all residents of the MetroWest region, will continue to offer fun and informative activities as well as food, live music, vendors, and prize drawings at its venue at Keefe Technical School in Framingham.

Workshops and other activities will focus on all aspects of wellness, such as outdoor recreation, mental health resources, job-searching, and family decision-making, such as estate planning and senior housing options. Attendees can participate in artmaking, crafting, and fitness activities.

"With a significant percentage of our residents now aged 55 and older, we are designing the fair to connect them with a variety of community resources that improve quality of life," said Senate President Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland). "As we return to an in-person fair, mental health strategies and other tools for wellbeing and community connectedness are more critical than ever–for older adults as well as for people who love them."

To give attendees greater flexibility in choosing fair workshops, registration has been streamlined this year. Beginning September 15, residents may register on www.karenspilka.com/fair. Registrants will be able to read about the workshops in advance and then choose which ones to attend on the day of the event. Registration is not mandatory, but meals and workshop seating are not guaranteed for non-registrants.

Senate President Spilka's 55+ Fair is scheduled to be held in-person at Keefe Regional Technical School, at 750 Winter Street in Framingham, on October 22, 2022. Residents are encouraged to call the office of Senate President Spilka at (617) 722-1500 with questions.

“Closing the gates for this season is heartbreaking" both King Richard’s Faire and Pawsox cancel seasons

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
It was a “royally difficult” decision to make, but this fall’s eight-week run of the King Richard’s Faire has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The popular Renaissance-themed faire was supposed to take place Sept. 5-Oct. 25.

“Even royalty cannot beat the coronavirus,” said the faire’s longtime producer, Bonnie Shapiro who runs the operation with her daughter, Aimee Shapiro Sedley.

Shapiro and her late husband, Richard, brought the faire to Carver in 1981. Spread over 80-acres, it transports visitors to the 16th century by offering an array of performers, artisans, hand-cranked rides, knife-throwing booths, animal attractions and period food and drink (think: bloomin’ onions and yards of beer).

The Pawtucket Red Sox today confirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation of their 2020 Minor League Baseball season. International League President Randy Mobley said, “Due to the many COVID-19 related challenges that would accompany staffing team rosters for a two-month season, Major League Baseball has now advised that they will not be assigning players to the teams of Minor League Baseball in 2020.”

This year is the first in the 137-year history of the International League (founded in 1884) that no games will have been played.

The PawSox will continue their community efforts to help those affected by the coronavirus, and will continue to celebrate their 50th anniversary (1970-2020).

As Major League Baseball gears up for its season, the Boston Red Sox have discussed using McCoy Stadium as the home of some of their workouts. Schedules and details will be announced.

In the News: "Seams Like a Dream"; Franklin election candidates set

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"There’s something to be said for putting on costumes. They have a certain magic to them, imbuing their fabrics and accessories with the power to transform and transport.

Franklin resident Lisa Maxwell Rounds -- a teacher, drama club advisor and seamstress -- knows that better than most people. For the past 19 years she has helped drape visitors to King Richard’s Faire, Massachusetts’ annual Renaissance fair held in Carver, in that magic and has seen it at work.

She owns Seams Like A Dream, a shop that serves as King Richard’s costuming shop, and operates it with the help of her 24-year-old daughter, Emily.

“Once you put on a costume, you become someone else,” she observes. “I’ve found this with a lot of people. They sort of become a character. They come out of their shell.”

"Campaigning for the bi-biennial town election in November is expected to kick into high gear as the deadline for filing candidacies has passed.

Town Clerk Teresa Burr issued the ballot lineup on Friday after her office completed certifying nomination papers. Burr, whose position is among those up for election, is facing no challenge in her bid for re-election to a four-year term.

The entire Town Council and School Committee are up for election, and there is no dearth of candidates for either."

There's Still Time to Join us for the 2018 Senior Fair!

There's Still Time to Join us for the 2018 Senior Fair!
Greetings,

Each fall, I am thrilled to host the Senior Health and Wellness Fair. As you may know from past years, this is an exciting event for everyone involved!

The fair will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Joseph P. Keefe Technical School, 750 Winter Street in Framingham. The event includes a continental breakfast and hot lunch!

The goal of the Senior Health and Wellness Fair is to provide a forum for MetroWest seniors to learn, ask questions and enjoy a fun day out. This year's program will include workshops on health programs, benefits and wellness activities. A variety of booths will provide information on health and wellness topics ranging from preventing falls, to dental health, to decluttering your home. Remember to bring your insurance card to make sure you can get your flu shot!

I hope you or your loved ones will consider joining us for a fun, informative and engaging event! Please call my office at 617-722-1500 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Senate President Karen E. Spilka
