In the News: Friends of the Poor Walk, Healing Hands for Arthritis

"The Society of St. Vincent dePaul of St. Mary’s Parish in Franklin will sponsor the Friends of the Poor Walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Parish of St. Mary, 1 Church Square, Franklin. 

Walkers will collect pledges, and the money promised to them from family, friends, neighbors and co-workers and turn it in to the parish on the day of the walk. All collected funds stay in Franklin to help those in need, regardless of faith. 

The walk will begin at the intersection of Church Square and Oak Street, right onto Oak to Iroquois, to the end of Iroquois and back to St. Mary’s Church. The route is 3 miles. Walkers may turn back at Lucius Street for a 2-mile walk. 

To register: stmarysfranklin.org. This site gives all necessary information for the local walk. People may also register on the actual day of the walk, beginning at 9 a.m."

"Local Massage Envy locations will host the sixth annual Healing Hands for Arthritis event Sept. 28 to raise donations for the Arthritis Foundation’s efforts to find a cure and enrich the lives of those affected by arthritis. 

On Sept. 28, $10 from each one-hour wellness massage and Murad Healthy Skin facial service will be donated to the Arthritis Foundation. In addition, 10 percent of in-store purchases on that day are donated."

3rd Annual Fundraiser - The Treasured Chests Avon Walking Team

The Treasured Chests Avon Walking Team will hold it’s 3rd Annual Fundraiser at Waxy O’Connor’s in Foxboro. 

Please help support The Treasured Chests Team, which will be walking 39 miles over two days in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk to be held in Boston on July 9 and 10th. On May 12th at Waxy O’Connor’s there will be a live band, “South Street Six”, tons of treasures to win, door prizes, a 50/50, light appetizers and a cash bar. 

Admission is $20 per person. Waxy O’Connor’s is located at The Shops at Chestnut Green, 121 Main Street in Foxboro.

The incredABLE Walk, Run and All-Day Family Fun will be hosted by Gene Lavanchy from Fox 25 News and Steve Nelson, the all-time great New England Patriots' linebacker.  The event is generously sponsored by EMC², Rockland Trust and Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

In celebration of the event's 15^th year, HMEA rebranded the event to draw attention to the abilities — and not the disabilities — of the over 4,000 people in 110 Massachusetts communities it serves.

According to Doug McPherson, the event used to be called the Independence Run and Walk. "HMEA has been successful in helping people with Autism and other development disabilities become ABLE to live an independent life," he said. "We wanted to remind the general public that the people we serve are ABLE to contribute to their communities in profound ways."

The event also celebrates the families, care workers, educators and support staff who support HMEA's clients. "When a child or young adult is diagnosed with Autism or other developmental disabilities the entire family is affected. HMEA also helps families, school systems and medical personnel understand the challenges of raising a child with disabilities."

"Residents attending the Town Council meeting Wednesday night applauded after the council approved a $1.8 million sidewalk project. 

The council unanimously approved the work, which would install new sidewalks and repair existing sidewalks along Pleasant and Chestnut streets. 

Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said the matter came before the council last year, with the body voting to devote $50,000 for the design of the sidewalk. The town had subsequently gone out to bid on the project, with the total cost coming to about $1.8 million."

"The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. April 21 at the Franklin Elks Lodge, 1077 Pond St. 

Eligible donors can give red blood cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. During a double red cell donation, two units of red blood cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment."

Missin' Matt Walk - Sep 12

Meghan Giacomuzzi knows first-hand the effects drug addiction can have on a family. 

Giacomuzzi lost her brother, Matthew Bertulli, a Hopedale native who was living in Milford, to a heroin overdose in 2012. As she continues to grieve her brother’s death, Giacomuzzi is organizing a walk to raise awareness about opiate addiction and the need to properly dispose of unneeded prescription medications. 

“This has definitely helped me get through (Bertulli’s death),” she said of organizing the Sept. 12 walk at 11 a.m. at Milford Town Park. “If I can save one life through doing this it’s worth all the work I put in.”

Hero Walk - Tri-County - Sep 20

The John R. Elliott Hero Walk is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at The Tri-County Regional Tech Vocational High School, 147 Pond St.

Sam Hogan will be hosting a dog walk at DelCarte Conservation Area on Pleasant St in Franklin on Sunday, June 14 from 12:00-1:30. 

Dog treats will be available for sale, and people going to the event are encouraged to donate a supply. All proceeds will benefit the North Attleboro Animal Shelter.

Good Friday 'Cross Walk' is scheduled on the Franklin Town Common

Friday, April 3-    12:00-1:00 pm

St Mary's teen ministry is organizing a 'Cross Walk' procession on the Franklin Town Common beginning at Noon on Good Friday.  

Christians of all denominations and ages are welcome.  Participants will gather on the Church Square end of the common.  Together, they will walk through and around the Franklin town common and back to St Mary's lawn, pausing along the way to reflect on Jesus' great love for us.  

Anyone who wishes to may help share the burden of carrying the heavy cross during the procession. Teens from The Rock Youth Ministry of St Mary's parish will read reflections and prayers at each stop.   

All area residents and our families and friends from surrounding communities are encouraged to take part in this meaningful procession on Good Friday to remember Christ's Passion.

The sun was shining on the cool morning when I went walking around Franklin on Saturday.

Fletcher Field is getting a new installation of a tot playground. You may recall earlier this year there was an opportunity to use a State grant to put in a sprinkler park. It turned out that the water testing for the sprinkler park was going to be cost prohibitive so the grant was used to purchase and install this tot area. The work needs to be done by the end of the month in order to receive the grant. By the looks of it, they'll make it.

The folks at Franklin Ford were in a festive mood with so many balloons dancing in the breeze.

The Cake Bar is doing a fund raiser to provide four cup cakes with each of the 200 holiday hams being prepared for distribution this week by the Franklin Food Pantry. Please consider stopping by to help fund this effort. For every 4 purchased, the Cake Bar will add 1.

The democratic process will be at work this Tuesday. Polls open at 6:00 AM and close at 8:00 PM. All voting for all precincts is done in one place at the gym in the new Franklin High School.

There is only one ballot to vote on. One candidate to fulfill the open position on the Town Council. The Town Council, while a volunteer position, really sets the priority on what happens in Franklin. They fund the budget, they set the tax rate (including raising the taxes automatically by 2.5% every year). So your vote counts more this time than it does respectfully in almost any other election.

Make time Tuesday. Get out and cast your vote.

Turkey Trot Family 5K Fun Run

Hi Steve:

It's that time of year again!  The Turkey Trot 5K race - to support the Franklin Food Pantry -  is this Thanksgiving morning.  Register on-line or on-site the morning of the race, do the 5K and be home before 10.  It is a great community building event - and all for a great cause.

The pantry said that this race is their biggest fundraiser each year. Let's keep this tradition going. Last year, the race raised $6,721.00 and 2,582 pounds of food for the food pantry with 430 registered race participants.

The Interfaith Council of Franklin is happy to be one of the sponsors - and is looking forward to a great day at the races :)
