In the News: ArtWeek planning for kick off; 2020 Census an important count

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"ArtWeek events will be on a more palatable level this spring.
After regulations approving food trucks and beer gardens was passed in late 2018, Stacy David, chairperson of the Franklin Cultural Council, said they’re expecting this year’s kickoff event to be a lot more flavorful.
The first event of the week-long festival takes place on April 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. It’s not only meant give people a peek at what the town’s artists have to offer, but to enrich their palates with more than just paint.
“There will be food trucks, live performances, and a juried craft fair on the town common, as well as a beer garden, and fine art exhibition across the street at Hayward Manor,” David said."

Fine Crafters Wanted!
Fine Crafters Wanted!
"The 2020 U.S. Census, a decennial headcount of every person living in the United States, is still a year away. But local, state and federal officials in January officially kicked off the process in Massachusetts.
“When people think of the 2020 census they think about just counting numbers, but we’ve been working on this now for three years,” said John Barr, census program manager at the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. “It’s so important that the ground work is done.”
The census first started in the 18th century and is required by the U.S. Constitution. It was originally designed to determine how many representatives each state would send to the U.S. House of Representatives. And while it still serves that purpose, the census has become far more complicated over the last two centuries.
Today it represents a wildly important, highly controversial and politically charged process, exacerbated most recently by a growing mistrust in government and its respect for privacy. The 2020 census is already embroiled in a legal debate over a citizenship question added by the Trump administration."

In the News: third of folks go without care; grant applications available for ArtWeek

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Most adults who sought care for mental health or substance use disorders in Massachusetts in the last year had trouble obtaining that care, regardless of whether or not they had insurance coverage to help pay for the care.
The 2018 Massachusetts Health Reform Survey found that more than a third of the people who sought behavioral health care in the last 12 months have gone without that care and that 57 percent of the people who sought care said they had trouble finding a provider who would see them.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation on Tuesday morning will release the results of the survey conducted by the Urban Institute and Social Science Research Solutions earlier this year based on responses from 2,201 individuals.
“I think all in all, it’s sort of another set of data that indicates what we all sort of anecdotally experience and hear about: that there are real access problems with getting mental health and substance use disorder care,” Audrey Shelto, president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, said. She added, “In a state where we have made such dramatic gains in coverage, it is disturbing that so many people with mental health and substance use conditions face these challenges in getting treatment.”

"Grant applications are now available for the ArtWeek 2019 in Franklin, the second year the town is participating in the statewide event.
ArtWeek is a 10-day festival that features unique artistic experiences from local businesses and organizations. Some of the events offered are participatory, while others offer a look at how artists do their work.
Chairman of the Franklin Cultural Council, Stacey David said that the town hosted 50 events in 2018′s ArtWeek. This year, Franklin hosted 10 percent of the state’s events, and had a massive turnout, she said. For 2019, they’re hoping for even more, she said.
“The response was really great,” David said. “Everything was very well-attended and the people there were really excited.”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Presented by the Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek expanded its partnership with Music Drives Us to provide grants for events during its 2018 festival (April 27 – May 6).
A Franklin resident, Lydia Lucas, received a $500 performance grant to support the presentation of the event, Drumming Around the World, during ArtWeek. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 2-3 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School, 201 Main St., Franklin.

"The U.S. opioid crisis has passed a dubious milestone: Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl have surpassed deaths involving prescription opioids.
This change occurred in 2016, according to data published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. And it seemed to happen pretty suddenly.
Data from the National Vital Statistics System show that there were 42,249 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. That includes 19,413 that involved synthetic opioids, 17,087 that involved prescription opioids and 15,469 that involved heroin. (In some cases, more than one type of drug was implicated in the death.)"

In the News: ArtWeek continues through Sunday; Downtown Partnership looking for new members

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Just like the waxing moon, Franklin waxed full of arts over the weekend, making for a successful kick-off to the town’s first ArtWeek celebration.
An evening featuring a sampling of mini performances at the Franklin Historical Museum on Friday blossomed into a full day of creativity at various locations around town the next day, with a multi-media watercolor workshop, a chalk art event, creation of origami cranes, rendering of live performances into sketches and water color paintings, a fairy tale-based comedy, a family paint session, a dance performance and a musical theater concert.
It all continued on Sunday afternoon, with a performance by the Prolatio Singers and a concert by classical pianist Diana Fanning.
And that was just the start. The week-long celebration of the visual and performing arts, which the Franklin Cultural Council has organized in collaboration with Boston’s annual festival, runs through this Friday.

May Events At The Franklin Historical Museum

ArtWeek continues at the Franklin Historical Museum with the last 3 performances and presentations, as we proudly participate in this year’s state wide event sponsored by the Mass Cultural Council.

Enjoy a delightful firsthand account of various exploits and travel misadventures abroad with musical conductor and Franklin resident Jon Mitchell’s humorous presentation ‘NOW YOU CAN TAKE OFF YOUR CLOTHES’ – Anecdotes of an American Conductor in Europe. A slide presentation and original professional recordings highlight this light-hearted musical and visual presentation. Bring your sense of humor Thursday evening, May 3 at 6:30 PM.

NOTABLE BLEND, a women’s barbershop chorus, performs Saturday, May 5 at Noon. You’ll love the sounds of this a cappella group as you learn about 4 part harmony and experience their shared passion for singing. This performance is one of two by Notable Blend as part of ArtWeek. They’ll perform a second show later in the afternoon at the Franklin Public Library. This performance is supported by a grant from the Franklin Cultural Council.

Sunday, May 6 is an opportunity to experience KAI OLSSON ART AND MUSIC. Kai’s original art and original music will be combined in this presentation starting at 1:00 PM. View his mixed media acrylics, water colors and pencil sketches of landscapes, nature, portraits and surreal art. Listen to original recordings as well as live guitar and vocal performances. This event is supported by a grant from the Franklin Cultural Council.

Our Second Sunday Speaker Series continues on May 13 with noted local historian and author JAMES C. JOHNSTON JR. We are pleased to have Jim speak on the topic of the OLIVER POND HOUSE IN CONTEXT, its story and its history. Lifelong Franklin resident, Jim’s roots in Franklin go very deep. Long time public official, former Franklin High School history teacher and owner of Johnston Antiques, Rare Coins and Appraisal Service, Jim is an interesting and entertaining speaker. Don’t miss this chance to hear him speak on the topic of the historic Oliver Pond Home that he has lived in all his life. The presentation begins at 1:15 PM.

Coming in June, our Summer Bridal Gown Exhibit!

The museum is open Saturday mornings 10 AM-1 PM, Sunday afternoons 1 PM-4 PM and Thursday evenings 5 PM-8 PM. We’re located at 80 West Central Street, admission is always free and we’re wheelchair accessible.

"When we joined forces with Highland Street Foundation in 2013, I had no idea that there would be such enthusiastic support and demand for redefining cultural experiences and allowing people to take creativity into their own hands," said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., President and CEO of the Boch Center. "Not only does ArtWeek provide hundreds of free and affordable creative events, it also spotlights the rich cultural community that exists across Massachusetts. We hope everyone will come out to participate in one—or more—of the many terrific ArtWeek events!"

ArtWeek is an annual 10-day innovative festival featuring hundreds of unique and creative experiences that are hands-on, offering new ways to experience art and culture. ArtWeek was born in Boston in 2013 and recently expanded its footprint across the Commonwealth. This year, Mass Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism have joined ArtWeek as Lead Champions in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the state's creative economy. ArtWeek has also secured a network of more than 70 statewide, regional and local collaborators and over a dozen media partners to help promote the upcoming festival.

"It has been exciting to watch ArtWeek grow over the past few years," said Blake Jordan, Executive Director, Highland Street Foundation. "With more than 500 unique opportunities, ArtWeek truly allows everyone to participate in the arts, which is part of our core mission."
