Meet the Author: Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30 PM

Join Franklin native Jennie Coughlin for a discussion about how local history and area towns influence the fictional town of Exeter in her two books.  Jennie Coughlin wrote her first short story as a project for Nina Santoro's local history unit at Horace Mann Middle School. The history and lore of Franklin and the surrounding towns still influences her fiction, right down to the name — since the Franklin town fathers chose not to use the name Exeter, she borrowed it for her fictional small town. When she's not spinning tales of the Irish mob-infested small town, Coughlin is digital projects editor for a group of three newspapers in upstate New York.

Firefighters were called to a Franklin restaurant Saturday afternoon after grease in a deep fryer ignited, causing some smoke damage to the building.

Man’s leg pinned under train in Franklin

A man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital on Friday with serious but non-life threatening injuries after one of his legs was caught under a train when he fell onto the tracks at the Forge Park station, according to an MBTA spokeswoman.

To those unfamiliar with the literary business, her career might appear to be stumbling. In fact, the Franklin mother of three has had her share of success, even as she humbly acknowledges to being "a little fish in a big pond." 

Spinella’s first novel, "Beautiful Disaster," a story set in the Deep South about two former lovers reconnected, was nominated in the "Best First Book" category at the 2012 RITA Awards, which recognize the top authors and novels in the popular romance genre. 

And in November, Spinella published her sophomore novel, "Perfect Timing," named by the Open Book Society, an online discussion group of readers throughout the state, as one of the "best reads of 2013."

"All the weird stuff was my stuff"

Author Christopher Golden visited the Horace Mann Middle School this week.

A Framingham native, he met in the morning with more than 60 students before holding a writing workshop. He started the lecture by urging them to do what they love in life and not to let dreams of wealth cloud or defer the dreams that matter. 

"I know the focus is on how do I get a job where I can make a lot of money so I can have whatever I want," the 45-year-old said. "But what if the whatever you want is the way you can make a lot of money?" 

Golden said stories, fiction or non-fiction, have an enormous power to influence life. 

"Go back to the beginning … the images that were painted on cave walls told a story," he said. "Legends and myths and oral traditions that Native Americans told around fires that were passed along, passed along, passed along before they were ever written down — stories."

It happens, sometimes, in the White House - or a ranch house in Franklin - that great minds come together and do something amazing.

In the name of promoting literacy, 108 renowned authors and illustrators joined forces and created the anthology: "Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out."

The star cast of contributors include a National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, four Pulitzer Prize winners, three National Book Award recipients (and eight finalists), two MacArthur "Genius Fellows," 13 Newbery Medal winners (and 15 finalists), eight Caldecott Medal recipients (and 20 honors) and 12 Coretta Scott King Award winners (and 22 honors).

The idea for the historical book arose nearly a decade ago in the Franklin home of Mary Brigid Barrett, the founder, president and executive director of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance.

In the New - author in residence, senior residence assistance

FRANKLIN -

Jed Horne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and former editor of the Times Picayune (New Orleans) will be the author in residence at Dean College.

Horne, author of the book "Breach of Faith," will read, present and sign copies of his book at a community event on Wednesday, Sept. 24, starting at 7 p.m., in the College’s Campus Center.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by Dean College’s Student Government Association.

For the past two years, resident Ron Higginbottom and Town Councilor Joseph McGann have been making life at home safer for more than 100 Franklin seniors.

Every time the Senior Center's nurse inspects an elderly resident's home to prevent falls and finds a lack of grab bars in the bathroom, Higginbottom and McGann volunteer to install one there, said Senior Center Director Karen Alves.

As part of the center's Safe and Secure at Home program, the nurse visits seniors' homes and conducts risk assessments for falls, she said.

"Statistics say that for a lot of seniors, when they take a fall, it's usually a hospital visit or death (that results). Typically, they'll break a hip, which leads to a nursing home," Alves said.
