Franklin Student Wins National Gold Medal in Music

Mia Quinn, who lives in Franklin and studies voice at Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios, has been awarded the National Gold Medal of Excellence for 2016-2017 in Preparatory Voice, with a remarkable score of 97. The Royal Conservatory of Music awards the National Gold Medal to the student who has achieved the highest score in the country within their specific skill level for each instrument.
Mia Quinn
Mia Quinn

Mia, now 11 years old, has been studying voice, as well as performing and recording albums with the Recording Ensemble at Encore for over two years. Under the guidance of her vocal instructor, Lisa Ostrow, (who has guided students to national gold medals twice before), Mia began her studies in voice using the curriculum of the RCM right from the start.

The Royal Conservatory of Music provides a recognized national standard of success in music study from beginner to advanced levels. It inspires excellence through individual student assessments that are central to the Program, while also supporting teachers with high-quality and innovative resources.

The RCM allows students to measure and celebrate accomplishment and track their progress throughout the country. All students and teachers across the United States are invited to participate, and Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios is proud to be able to offer these opportunities at the school and through outreach to the surrounding communities.

A number of students from Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios, located in Franklin and Millis, participate in the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) assessment sessions each year. The RCM assessment process represents an extremely exciting opportunity for students, on a national level, to demonstrate the skills that they have honed through practice. Locally, assessments are held at Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios, which is a Founding School and a regional assessment center for this internationally-acclaimed program.
Mia Quinn and Lisa Ostrow

Student participants come from all around the New England area to take the assessments, while adjudicators travel from all across Canada in order to administer the exams. Not only do the adjudicators judge students based on ability to perform on the instrument of their choice within their skill level, but they also administer academic assessments in music theory, harmony, history, and analysis.

Ostrow, Vocal Director and co-owner of Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios, had this to say:
"Mia's accomplishment is extraordinary. Having scored an unprecedented score of 97 on her vocal assessment, her National Gold Medal is a true testament to the dedication she brings to her music studies, the level of support she receives from her family, her innate talent, and her tremendous desire to achieve. And, best of all, Mia is an absolute joy to work with - fun and funny, and incredibly sweet. We are very proud of her, as we are of all our students."

In December, 2017, Mia received First Class Honors with Distinction on her Level 1 vocal assessment with a score of 92, and is on her way to perform at Carnegie Hall as a result of having won her Gold Medal!

For the assessments, students are graded on proficiency in the following areas: Performance; technical requirements; aural skills; rhythm; and, sight-reading ability. Encore will be hosting another round of regional assessments this spring and is very much looking forward to the opportunity to meet and interact with young musicians from all over the Northeast.

Music for Young Children (MYC) enrolling for January 2018 Classes

Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios is pleased to announce their newest musical offering for young children and parents! Music for Young Children, (MYC), is an internationally-known, highly-ranked program that already has 37 years of success, over 900 teachers and 24,000 students and counting, across three continents!

Founded in Canada, MYC grew rapidly by building strong bonds with children through music. The goal is to provide the best musical education to young children by blending the pleasure and joy of music-making with sound instruction. Encore is proud to be adopting MYC's early childhood curriculum and methods which directly integrate into, and utilize, The Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum.

Music for Young Children (MYC)

This program, created for children ages two to ten years, is designed to teach children, at an early age, piano skills, how to read music, sight-reading skills, composition and ensemble playing. MYC instructors incorporate the four learning styles (auditory, tactile, analytical and visual) to teach each concept which ensures that every child has the highest level of success by being able to apply these skills in each class setting, and as they grow musically.

Encore will offer classes beginning in January, 2018, and registration is now open! Classes for ages 2 and 3 meet weekly for 10-week sessions. The Sunshine level (ages 3 and 4), Sunbeams (ages 5 and 6), and Moonbeams (ages 7-9) are one-hour, weekly classes that run for 36 weeks, broken into three 12-week sessions.
Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios

"We are incredibly excited to be able to offer this amazing program here at Encore Music Academy," says Caitlin Medlin, Encore's Assistant Vocal Director and Director of the Music For Young Children program at Encore. "The opportunity for little ones to begin the music-learning process at such a young age and with such a comprehensive curriculum is one we have been wanting to offer to our students for a while now."

"Our students are an integral part of what we do and who we are"

The Franklin radar picks up this find from Boston Voyager. It turns out that Encore Music celebrates their birthday on Sep 29.

"Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Ostrow.
Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My business partner, Patrick Dreier, and I, founded Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios on a bit of a whim. In August, 2011, we were both teaching music out of our homes, and running a recording studio out of Pat’s basement. While on the phone one day, I tossed out the idea of opening a school together, which was met with silence. I traveled to Canada that week and when I returned, Pat called and said, “About that idea you had …” to which I replied, “What idea?” and that is how Encore was born. Just one month later, on September 29, we signed Encore into existence!"

VOCAL PREPARATORY CLASS
Ages 6-8
This class offering at Encore is specifically designed for children who are too young for our more advanced vocal ensembles or private lessons. It is also a perfect stepping stone into the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program for those who are interested in becoming a part of this internationally-acclaimed achievement program. Students will be introduced to the elements of singing — breathing, ear-training, and rhythm. Performances will be held throughout the year.   Wednesdays: 5:00-5:45  OR Thursdays: 4:30-5:15

THE ENCORRIGIBLES
  Ages 8-13
This boys' vocal ensemble offers the opportunity to sing in a fun and supportive environment. This one-hour class will meet weekly and explore many genres of music including jazz, rock, pop, and a cappella. Opportunities to perform will be available throughout the year. No prior experience required.        Tuesdays: 6:00-7:00

GIRLS' VOCAL ENSEMBLE
Ages 8-13
This all-female vocal ensemble teaches teamwork while exploring two– and three-part harmony singing. Students will build self-confidence while expanding their knowledge of various musical genres like pop and musical theatre. Opportunities to perform will be available throughout the year. No prior experience required.  Thursdays: 5:30-6:30

THE ENHARMONIX RECORDING ENSEMBLE
 Ages 8-18, By Invitation

This class, held in tandem with our Recording Techniques course, is designed to teach students what it means to work as a studio musician/back-up vocalist. Students learn first-hand about mic-technique, patience, preparedness, harmonies, and production. This two-hour, weekly class requires commitment, home preparation, and flexibility. Students will have opportunities to perform both as a group and as soloists.
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00
WIND CHAMBER MUSIC

Ages 10 and up
Woodwind Specialist will be coaching this collaborative chamber group. Two years of experience with an instrument is recommended, but not required. Flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, and bassoon players are all welcome, and will have opportunities to perform as a group throughout the year. Mondays 7:00-8:00

JAZZ & ROCK ENSEMBLE

All abilities, ages, and instruments are welcome for this weekly class with John Salzillo! There are performance opportunities throughout the year, and students learn the art of improvisation and playing in a collaborative environment.
Saturdays: 1:30-3:00

SONGWRITER'S WORKSHOP
Ages 14 and up
The Songwriter's Workshop is a class designed specifically with the modern songwriter in mind. We will focus on the details of lyric writing, exploring rhyme schemes, literary devices, and lyrical analysis to assist our creation of vivid and descriptive stories.  We will analyze examples of popular song structures and music theory specific to the modern songwriter.

Basic music theory is not a prerequisite nor is the ability to play an instrument, but it is strongly encouraged.  Students will need a lyric writing journal and a device for taking notes. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their existing compositions or songs in progress with the class as we offer constructive critique and analysis in a safe and intimate setting. Tuesdays 7:00-8:00

RECORDING TECHNIQUES

Ages 13 and up
Instruction in audio recording techniques is the focus of this 90-minute, weekly class. Students learn about audio recording and sound reproduction in tandem with the Encore EnHarmonix recording ensemble. With hands-on work in an active recording studio, students will have opportunities to learn about signal flow, mic placement, sound engineering and editing, and many other aspects of music production.
  Wednesdays 6:30-8:00

BEGINNER THEORY
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of reading music, key signatures, time signatures, and other rudimentary concepts. This level of theory is a co-requisite for students of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program who are studying at Level 5.       Mondays 7:00-7:45

INTERMEDIATE THEORY  (Beginner Theory a prerequisite)

This class builds upon the concepts introduced in Beginner Theory. Students will continue to expand their knowledge of music, including composition and form. Co-requisite with Levels 6 and 7 of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.
Mondays 8:00-8:45

ADVANCED THEORY
(Intermediate Theory a prerequisite)

As Encore continues to grow and evolve, we are experiencing increased movement between our two facilities.  When we opened our Millis location in May, 2014, at 352 Village St., one very compelling reason for our choice of location was its proximity to our flagship location in Franklin.  Although they may sound very far apart, rest assured that our Millis location is just a short, two-mile, four-minute drive from Franklin and is easily accessible.
