Attention High School Seniors: Knights Of Columbus Scholarship Program 2022

The Knights of Columbus 1847 St Mary Parish Franklin is accepting applications for The Robert Simmler PGK, Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council Scholarships. They are offering two scholarships one in the sum of $3000 and the second $1000 scholarship.  

The applicants must be a registered member of St Mary’s Parish in Franklin, and must be graduating from High School in Spring 2022 and progressing onto their first year of study at a 2 or 4 year college/university.  

All interested applicants please submit a completed scholarship application postmarked on or before the application deadline of Friday April 8, 2022

The faculty and staff of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS), located in Franklin, Massachusetts, are pleased to announce that alumni scholarship applications for alumni who are graduating from high school this year are now available. This scholarship is designed for Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School graduates who have displayed academic achievement, a commitment to serving others, and continued to demonstrate virtuous behavior since graduating from BFCCPS.  Eligible students would have been a member of the BFCCPS Grade Eight class of 2018.

 Applicants must be a BFCCPS graduate who attended BFCCPS for a minimum of 3 years,  a graduating high school senior who will be entering their first year of post-secondary education and available to attend the BFCCPS 8th grade graduation in June where the scholarship will be awarded. 

The scholarship application is posted on the school's website at www.bfccps.org and to the BFCCPS Alumni Facebook page.  The application deadline is March 28, 2022. 

BFCCPS is a regional public charter school for students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight.  Founded in 1995, BFCCPS is one of the oldest and most successful charter schools in the state of Massachusetts. 

The school provides a well-rounded, rigorous academic program designed to educate the whole child providing yearlong courses in art, music, languages, technology, and physical education. The school's integrated character education, community service, and strong parent partnerships, have led to local, state and national recognition. Dean College Announces the Dr. Pietro (Pete) Savo Criminal Justice Internship in Collaboration with the Franklin Police Department

Dean College has announced the Dr. Pietro (Pete) Pete Savo Criminal Justice Internship, a new program in partnership with the Franklin Police Department. Each semester, one student from Dean College will have the opportunity to intern with the Franklin Police Department and gain valuable experience in the field of law enforcement. Students will be exposed to a variety of aspects pertaining to working on the force and leave with a working knowledge of next steps should they be interested in further pursing a law enforcement career.

 

“Dr. Savo was a tremendous educator,” says Dean College President Dr. Paula M. Rooney. “Students, staff, and faculty are all better for having known him and we are so proud to have Pete’s name on this internship.”

 

The internship is named in honor of Dr. Pietro (Pete) Savo, who passed away unexpectedly in June 2021. A beloved member of the Dean Community, Dr. Savo was an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the Criminal Justice and Homeland Security programs at the College and was coordinating the internship with the Franklin Police Department prior to his passing. Chief of Police Thomas J. Lynch approached Dean with the desire to name the internship after Dr. Savo as a tribute to his work at the College, in the community and in the field. This is the first internship at Dean to be named in honor of an individual.

 

“We are eager to work with Dean College on this exciting opportunity,” says Lynch.

 

The internship will be offered during both the Fall and Spring semesters. Dean College students will be able to earn three credits by completing 96 hours of work-based experience at the Franklin Police Department. Candidates will be nominated by faculty and staff, followed by a formal interview process with the Franklin Police Department for final approval.

 

“Dr. Savo was a teacher in every sense of the word,” says Dr. P. Gerard Shaw, Dean for the Dean College School of Business. “This internship is a tribute to his legacy and to the countless students he has impacted.”

Captain James Ahn, a graduate of UC Riverside and the Claremont McKenna College Army ROTC program, died in 2015 during a parachute training operation while participating with his Special Forces unit in Washington State. For all of those who knew and loved James, he will never be forgotten. He was the consummate person and professional who was respected by everyone he came in contact with. 

In James' honor, Gain Service Academy is sponsoring an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a Special Forces Veteran who is working towards the completion of a higher education degree.

Tri-County's Weidman awarded scholarship to Dean College

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce that Anna Weidman, a senior in the Engineering Career Program from Franklin, has been awarded a $36,000 tuition scholarship to Dean College for the 2021-2022 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years/eight semesters of attendance at Dean College, providing a GPA of at least 2.7 is maintained. This is the 23rd year that Dean College is awarding a Tri-County student with the scholarship.

Consideration for the scholarship is based on a completed admissions application, a Tri-County senior in good standing, superior academic record, teacher recommendations, interviews with a Dean College Admissions representative and Tri-County School Counselors, and extra-curricular activities, including employment. Anna was awarded the scholarship based on her professionalism, along with her many accolades. She works part-time at Daily Dog Sitting and delivering flowers for Luna Flowers. Weidman has maintained a 4.40 GPA and plans to pursue a Business Management degree from Dean College.

“Anna Weidman is an exceptional student who has excelled both inside the classroom and out. Anna represented Tri-County in SkillsUSA National Competitions in Engineering Technology and as a NASA Hunch Semi-Finalist,” says Kristian Johannesen, Guidance Counselor.

Dean College is a private, residential, not-for-profit institution that is fully accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
 
“The rewarding partnership we have with Dean College positively impacts our community. We are grateful for the generosity of Dean College,” said Stephen Dockray, Superintendent. “The scholarship program allows a Tri-County student the opportunity to pursue a college education. Boston.com: "Local breweries team up to brew ‘As One,’ which funds a scholarship for people of color"

"Four Massachusetts breweries have joined forces to launch a scholarship with the hopes of bringing more people of color into a majority white industry.

67 Degrees Brewing, Arcpoint Brewing, Crue Brew Brewery, and White Lion Brewing teamed up to brew “As One,” a New England IPA that will be available to the public on March 31. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the creation of a scholarship at Holyoke Community College, and will be available to students of color who are enrolled in the college’s beer, cider, and winemaking program.

“The fabric of the craft beer trade doesn’t mirror the fabric of the communities we work, play, and live in,” said Ray Berry, owner and founder at White Lion, in a press release. White Lion is one of just five Black-owned breweries in Massachusetts."

The Friends of Franklin Library Scholarship awarded to Emily Vinson

Emily Vinson, a 2020 Franklin High School graduate, has won The Friends of Franklin Library Scholarship in Memory of Wilma Winters. She received $1,000 toward the cost of her college education.

Vinson was selected as the contest winner based on her essay about a book that changed her thinking, "Becoming" by Michelle Obama. The former first lady's autobiography, Vinson wrote, inspired her to persevere through difficulties and to serve her community. 

"In these challenging times today, I hoped what I learned in the book 'Becoming' can help me focus on the positive, recognize there is still good in the world, and help others," Vinson wrote.

Now a Providence College student, Vinson has volunteered at the library, senior center and elsewhere. She also served as a basketball referee through the Franklin Recreation Department, an experience she used in her essay as an example of how perseverance turned her from a soft-spoken, unsure official to a confident one that over time earned the respect of players and coaches.

The Friends of Franklin Library established its scholarship program in 2014 as part of an effort to honor Wilma Winters, a longtime Franklin resident and library supporter. Winters, who had a long career in higher education, worked for many years as a librarian, including at Boston University Medical School and Harvard’s School of Public Health. She spent her retirement years volunteering at the Franklin Public Library. Winters died in 2011, leaving a sizable donation to The Friends. 

The scholarship program has assisted college-bound Franklin students in each of the past seven years. It will be awarded again this year to a member of the Class of 2021.

Franklin Resident Awarded the Carol A. Pizzi Scholarship

Declan Lynch, a recent graduate of Franklin High School, has been awarded the Carol A. Pizzi Scholarship by the Franklin Democratic Town Committee.

An Eagle Scout from Franklin, Declan and members of his troop recently completed a registry for Franklin’s Union Street Cemetery. He logged in more than 170 hours to make this project possible. Declan is also an active member of the Best Buddy program and has competed in many Special Olympic events.  He now proudly serves on the Best Buddy board. 

“To go from being coached in the pool to coaching younger children with disabilities is pretty cool. And to be able to represent kids with learning disabilities on the Best Buddies Board is quite an honor.”- Declan Lynch

Declan also volunteers his time every Friday at the Magnolia Heights Retirement Community where he plays games with the residents and enjoys bringing smiles to their faces.

This fall, Declan began his first year at Dean College as part of the Arch Program and will use the $1,000 scholarship to assist with tuition and school supplies. The Franklin Democratic Town Committee is thrilled to honor this extraordinary young man with this scholarship award and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.

The Carol A. Pizzi scholarship is named after beloved Franklin resident Carol A. (O’Connor) Pizzi who passed away in 2010. Carol was a real estate agent in town and a passionate member of the town’s Democratic committee. Southeastern MA Veterans' Service Officers Association $500 Scholarship!

Tri-County Regional Student Awarded Scholarship from Sisters@Heart

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce Connor Donovan, Class of 2020, has received a $1,000 scholarship from Sisters@Heart. The local nonprofit organization was founded to improve the lives of those affected by heart disease and stroke through funding research projects and providing financial assistance to impacted families in need.

Donovan is a graduate of Tri-County RVTHS computer information systems program. His demonstrated great strength, perseverance, and kindness while working to improves the lives of others set him apart from other applicants.

"We recognize the courage and strength involved in personally living with and overcoming heart and stroke related illnesses or having a family member impacted, and the importance of education as a means of awareness and prevention," a press release from Sisters@Heart read. "This scholarship reflects our commitment to educating our greater community and we are excited to support the recipients in their quest to better themselves and their opportunity for growth through education."

This scholarship was created in 2019 to help students who have been impacted by heart disease or stroke either personally or in their family. Donovan was selected as one of three recipients for the award.
