FHS boys hockey tops Foxboro, both swim teams top Milford

From HockomockSports.com we share the FHS sports results:

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 4 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final
– Franklin scored three straight goals between the first and second periods to seize the lead, and tacked on an empty net goal with just four seconds to go to earn a hard-fought win over Foxboro. Thomas Marcucella scored midway through the opening period to put Foxboro ahead 1-0 but Franklin’s Dylan Marchand tied it up with under two minutes to go in the period. Justin Abely scored to put the Panthers up 2-1 with 5:42 left in the second and Sean Connelly scored two minutes later to make it 3-1. Foxboro’s Brady Daly cut into the deficit and the Warriors had a power play chance that followed but couldn’t find the tying goal. Marchand iced it with the empty net goal. Will Sheehan had two assists for Franklin while JT Dwyer and Ben Jarosz each had one. Jack Paterson (27 saves) earned the win in net.

Boys Swimming = Franklin, 100 @ Milford, 54 – Final

Girls Swimming = Franklin, 105 @ Milford, 52 – Final

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 0 @ Canton, 4 – Final
"So much about this season is unfamiliar and out of place, but with its return to the new and improved Metropolis Rink (aka Ponky) Canton found something recognizable. It was a lot brighter (and considerably warmer) than its previous incarnation but the Bulldogs looked right at home in Wednesday night’s season opener.

Audrey Koen scored twice and Carolyn Durand made 12 saves to record a shutout, as defending Div. 2 state co-champ Canton beat rival Franklin 4-0 to kick off its league title defense.

Franklin started quicker. The Panthers tested Durand early, forcing her into three saves in the opening minutes. Lindsay Atkinson had the best chance for the visitors after a shot from the point bounced to her on the edge of the crease but Durand stayed with it to make the stop.

“Our big thing was making sure we had a good start and I think we did that but as the game went on we may have gotten a little away from our position,” said Franklin assistant Mike Lubin, who was in charge in the absence of head coach Margie Burke. “For us having a few girls out and it being the first game, I thought we played excellent. I think we’ll definitely build on it.”

In the News: "Katie Cashin makes immediate splash at Drew University"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"On Feb. 16 in Germantown, Md., Katie Cashin stood on a podium. It had become a familiar feeling for Cashin, just as it was for the man who inspired her to start swimming: Olympic legend Michael Phelps.
The former Franklin High standout holds five school records with the Panthers. Now, she is a rising sophomore at Drew University, and she made quite a splash while setting new records in her first year at the Madison, N.J., school.
In her freshman year, Cashin was named the Landmark Conference Women’s Rookie of the Year after a season in which she won four gold medals in addition to a silver and a bronze. She followed in the footsteps of two-time conference Swimmer of the Year Mal Vishwanath, who had claimed the league’s Rookie of the Year three years prior.
“Seeing Katie stand where I stood three years ago just brought a feeling of such pride,” said Vishwanath, who is from Bangalore, India."

Both FHS boys and girls basketball AND swim teams post wins on Friday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of FHS winter sports action on Friday.

Boys Basketball = Oliver Ames, 54 @ Franklin, 57 – Final
– Senior Chris Edgehill scored a season-high 26 points and the Panthers held off a late rally from Oliver Ames to get the win. Oliver Ames held a 17-11 lead after a quarter of play and took a 24-23 advantage into halftime but Franklin used a big third quarter to take the lead for good. The Panthers poured in 23 points in the third with senior Brayden Sullivan scoring nine of his 11 points in the frame and both Edgehill and Steven Karayan hit from three to give Franklin a 46-37 lead heading into the fourth. OA had a shot to tie it at the buzzer but it was off the mark. Evan Craig scored a team-high 13 points for OA, Owen Friel added 12 points, Jay Spillane chipped in with 11 points, and Ryan Burkett added 10 points for the Tigers.

Boys Swimming = King Philip, 67 @ Franklin, 102

Girls Swimming = King Philip, 81 @ Franklin, 89

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 71 @ Oliver Ames, 41 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

As a freshman, Franklin forward Olivia Quinn got to experience life on the varsity team, spending every practice going up against the Panthers star center Ali Brigham during the team’s run to a Div. 1 Central title. That experience seems to have paid off handsomely for the Panthers because Quinn has taken her game to another level this winter.

In a showdown at the Nixon Gym of the top two teams in the Kelley-Rex division, Quinn was unstoppable. She poured in a career-high 32 points, including 23 in the second half, and knocked down five three-pointers, including all four that she took after the break.

Quinn and Brigham combined to score 37 of Franklin’s 41 points in the second half, as the Panthers rolled to a 71-41 victory and grabbed control of first place in the division.

“I thought on offense we executed at a high level, especially in the second half,” Franklin coach John Leighton explained. “We got under control, we didn’t kick the ball around the gym, stopped fouling, and just got good possessions. When they doubled Ali, we moved the ball and kids knocked down open shots.”

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 52 @ Taunton, 83 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

"The Taunton boys basketball team delivered a message to the rest of the Hockomock League on Friday night.

At the expense of visiting Franklin, that message was sent loud and clear.

The Tigers, locked in at both ends of the floor from start to finish, had one of their best all-around games since joining the league nearly a decade ago, earning a dominating 83-52 win over the previously unbeaten Panthers.

“That was one of the best games we’ve played on both ends of the floor,” said longtime Taunton head coach Charlie Dacey."
