Youth Basketball Leagues Enrolling for Smart Team Player Development through Fast-Paced Games in 3 v 3 Format (grades 1-6)

The YMCA is hosting 1 hour 15 minute youth basketball leagues, which will run Saturdays starting February 8th in Foxboro and Franklin and Sundays starting February 9th in North Attleboro. This eight week program is an addition to YMCA offerings and is available through partnership with the premier teaching program for youth basketball—Crafty Basketball, which is based in Mansfield, MA.
Youth Basketball Leagues
Youth Basketball Leagues

Crafty 3x3 Basketball develops players in grades 1-6 with its focus on doing the things smart team basketball players do. The benefit of 3 on 3 games vs traditional youth leagues is players will get more touches of the ball. Develop smarter, savvier players in a format different than 5 on 5 basketball. Learn how a passion for the game develops from playing beautiful, team-based basketball with an emphasis on combining skill and smarts.

Here is the breakdown of times by age group:

  • SATURDAYS (2/8-3/28): GRADE 1-2 8:30 a.m. (Franklin) 10:00 a.m. (Foxboro) coed; GRADE 3-4: boys 10:00 a.m. (Franklin) 11:30 a.m. (Foxboro) and girls 11:30 a.m. (Franklin) 1:00 p.m. (Foxboro); GRADE 5-6: boys 1:00 p.m. (Franklin) 2:30 p.m. (Foxboro) and girls 2:30 p.m. (Franklin) 4:00 p.m. (Foxboro)
  • SUNDAYS (2/9-3/29): GRADE 1-2 11:15 a.m. (North Attleboro) coed; GRADE 3-4: boys 12:30 p.m. (North Attleboro) and girls 1:45 p.m. (North Attleboro); GRADE 5-6 3:00 p.m. (North Attleboro) boys & girls divisions

Changing the way basketball is taught. Innovative scoring will reward your son or daughter for doing the things smart team players do: 1 Point awarded for any unassisted basket, 2 Bonus Points awarded for assisted back door cuts, 2 Points awarded for any other assisted basket, 1 Point awarded for free throw. Assisted scoring play occurs when player scores after pass and no more than 1 dribble. Each player on a winning team is awarded two points for a win. For games ending in a tie, all players receive 1 point.

Enroll today at: www.hockymca.org/crafty. Cost is $85 and you do not have to by a member of the Y. Non-members will be required to start an account by simply providing an email address and password. In the News: distillery seeking permit for operation; Library has dungeons and dragons club

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"After the abrupt closing of Incontro Restaurant last week, a new owner is looking to take over the space – GlenPharmer Distillery.
The old mill building at 860 West Central St. may soon be home to the new distillery and restaurant after a public hearing on Feb. 25. The hearing will take place in the Town Council Chambers at the Franklin Municipal Building at 7:30 p.m during a Planning Board meeting.
The company, owned by Franklin resident Patrick Downing, is seeking a special permit to distill spirits on site. Town Planner Amy Love said that Downing plans to distill many types of alcohol, including vodka, gin and whiskey. A tasting room is also planned.
“With Incontro closing, he (Downing) does still want a restaurant in there,” Love said. “At this time we really don’t know what it’s going to be.”

"There is a unique realm in the recesses of the Franklin Public Library that young adventures can explore any plane imaginable – Dungeons and Dragons for Kids.
One player on put a hand on the handle of a long sword, just for precaution, as the team walks into a building in what looks like a deserted town. There’s a gnome sitting in what used to be a shop, lavender-colored clouds of smoke pluming from his pipe as he watches the young adventurers make their way into the room.
Dungeon Master, 11-year-old Soren Harrington, set the scene on Monday afternoon, reading from a guide while creating situations of his own as the other players made their way through the path that he partially created.
It’s the imagination and creativity involved with the game that draws the young players into the game, said Assistant Youth Services Librarian Mitzi Gousie. The idea to start a Dungeons and Dragons club at the library wasn’t her own, she said. It was inspired by one of their frequent youth visitors."

Youth Sports Got You Crazy? - Apr 27

Kids’ sports can bring out the best in our children. It teaches them to be team players, to work hard and be disciplined and to make healthy lifestyle choices. But sometimes, do you feel that the demands of youth sports can take over? What are we gaining and what, if anything, are we missing out on?

Please join us for an informative panel discussion about youth sports in our modern suburban culture and how it impacts all of our families. What can we learn from each other – and the Bible – about how to balance our lives and prioritize our goals?

Two of our featured panelists will include: Former Patriots Offensive Lineman Matt Light and Former NHL Player and Director of Ronan Power Skating Ed Ronan

When: Thursday 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Where: New England Chapel  http://www.newenglandchapel.org/

Brought to you by Pulse and Family Ministries @ NEC

Attention: Franklin Area Sophomores in high school

It’s that time of year again and The Rotary Club of Franklin is interested in community leadership, not only for today but for tomorrow as well.

For this reason, Rotary District 7910 will conduct the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference at Fitchburg State University on June 23-25, 2017. The program will be staffed by carefully selected counselors and Rotary leaders.
The Rotary Club of Franklin
The Rotary Club of Franklin

Our objective is to offer outstanding high school sophomores an opportunity to live, work and interact together in an atmosphere of friendly competition. Also, we provide them with a program designed to challenge them to utilize and improve their skills and accept the responsibilities of leadership. Much of the students’ time will be structured with programs including interactive Leadership Labs, exciting guest speakers, and challenging mental and physical activities that will provide them with a chance to excel amongst and with their peers. The greatest benefit may come from sharing this experience with the more than 150 other outstanding young men and women selected from schools and organizations through Rotary District 7910 in Central Massachusetts.

Our Rotary Club is asking your help to spread the word to the young men and women who will benefit most from this experience. They will be selected by the Franklin Rotary first for leadership potential, second for good citizenship, third for their desire to attend the Conference and fourth for scholarship. These characteristics are listed in that order so that latent leaders are not overlooked because of grades. They are extremely important to keep in mind to ensure the success of the student’s experience and the entire program.

The only requirement is that in order to be nominated, the individual must be a student who is currently a Sophomore in high school and in the Franklin area. We send children to RYLA from Bellingham High, Franklin High, King Philip High, Medway High and Tri-County High.

Applications should be made e-mailed to Julie Rougeau at jrougeau@comcast.net no later than March 3, 2017.

Our club’s RYLA Selection Committee will then conduct interviews and select the students we will sponsor for RYLA.

For more information about RYLA or Rotary, visit us online at http://www.ryla7910.org/

From Ansh's project page on GoFundMe
My name is Ansh Tarafder and I am a 8th grader at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School In Franklin, Massachusetts. I am working on my community service project in my school called Capstone. In my project, I am working on increasing health awareness in kids. I chose this project as we kids are the future of our country and we need to be healthy so that we can learn better and also help advance it.
As a part of my project, I have set up a Wellness Committee in my school. We had our first meeting on 30th September 2014. From now on, the Committee will be working independently to increase awareness in my school community and I will continue to be a part of it. The Hockomock Area YMCA and Action For healthy Kids are supporting my efforts in this regard.
My other goal is to raise $600 to sponsor 2 YMCA youth memberships for 2 kids who cannot afford it. I am a member of the YMCA and it is a fun & nice place for kids to play, exercise and get healthy. Please help me reach my goal by donating to my cause. Thank you to everyone who supported me in my project .
