MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women - currently accepting applications

October 2, 2014

Dear Steve,

I am pleased to share the exciting news that legislation I filed to establish a Metrowest Commission on the Status of Women was recently signed by the Governor. This commission will amplify the voices of women and girls in the MetroWest region and identify specific ways to advance women's rights here and across the state. We are promoting equality and opportunity for all women in our communities and helping to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the Commonwealth.

There are currently five county and regional women's commissions operating under the umbrella of the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW) in Berkshire County, Bristol County, Cape and Islands, Essex County and Worcester County. The new law fills a gap in commission coverage to ensure that women and girls of MetroWest also have their voices heard.

MCSW is currently accepting applications from people interested in joining this new nine member volunteer commission, and I encourage all people with knowledge of the challenges women face in MetroWest communities to apply. The MetroWest commission will study and report on the status of women and girls in the region, recommending ways to advance women's rights and promote equal access to health care, employment, education and economic development opportunities.

Applications to join the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women are due December 1st. Please click here for more information about the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women and a link to the application.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns or comments, please do not hesitate to call my office at (617) 722-1640 or email me at Karen.Spilka@masenate.gov.
Warm Regards,

Welcoming winemaker Brett Jackson of Vina Valdivieso

Valdivieso's head winemaker Brett Jackson comes to Chile by way of New Zealand, and brings with him a knowledge of cool-climate winemaking, an enthusiasm for Pinot Noir, and the desire to translate the varied terroir of Valdivieso's vineyards.

We're already big fans of his single vineyard Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. On Friday, he will also be pouring the Classic Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet; Valdivieso's Sparkling Brut; and the brand-new Caballo Loco (Crazy Horse) blend.

This is your chance to taste some terrific new wines, chat with the winemaker about what you're tasting, and maybe pick up a signed bottle or two.

Signed bottles make killer gifts for those hard-to-please wine lovers on your holiday list. The Caballo Loco? That might just find its way onto your own holiday table.

Want to extend the fun? The Acme Jazz Quartet is playing the very first Jazz at the Black Box, starting at 7 PM. World-class music, right down the street. For more info and/or tickets, click
