THE BLACK BOX August Summer Concerts Feature The Mark Poniatowski Situation and The Love Dogs

THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin’s theater, music, and event venue, continues its second annual Summer Concert Series with two August music events featuring the Mark Poniatowski Situation and The Love Dogs.

Mark Poniatowski
Mark Poniatowski
The Mark Poniatowski Situation headlines a BLACK BOX Jazz concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 4. Led by bassist, composer and arranger Mark Poniatowski, the Situation also features Walter Platt on trumpet, Jon Garniss on trombone, Kenny Hadley on drums, Mark Shilansky on piano and Dino Govoni on saxophone. The Mark Poniatowski Situation released a self-titled CD of jazz instrumentals composed and arranged by Poniatowski in 2010.

An associate professor in the Contemporary Writing and Production department at Berklee College of Music, Mark Poniatowski has performed with artists including the Bruce Katz Band, Toni Lynn Washington Band, Kenny Hadley Big Band, Soul Kitchen, Floyd Dixon, Sid Caesar, Rita Moreno, Bob Newhart, Junior Watson, Janiva Magness and Kid Ramos. Among his performances throughout the US and Europe are the Boston Globe Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz and Blues Festival, Boston Blues Festival, The River Festival, and The Natt Jazz Festival in Norway. Recordings include Two Sides with Joe Bargar and the Soul Providers, Mississippi Moan with the Bruce Katz Band, and The George Carlin Show soundtrack.

THE BLACK BOX Summer Concert Series continues with The Love Dogs, featuring rockin’ rhythm and blues, on Saturday, August 12 at 8 p.m. With barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano, stinging Fender guitar, and a red-hot horn section of trombone and alto, tenor and baritone saxes, The Love Dogs also showcases a swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called “the best in the business” and a charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around.

The Love Dogs
The Love Dogs
Based out of Boston, the septet recently celebrated its 20th year. Combining elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B, and early rock ‘n’ roll, The Love Dogs have played juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. They’ve released four CDs. Many of the cuts have been blues radio favorites and several of the Dogs’ signature original songs have been used in feature films and on television. The New York Post says, “Even though the music could make Leonardo’s David dance, it’s the songwriting that separates these dogs from the rest of the pack.” Voted “Best New England Band” by Blues Audience magazine, The Love Dogs is part Rat Pack party, part 20th century musical encyclopedia, and part revival meeting.

The band’s lineup, featuring some of the Northeast’s best players, consists of Eddie “Duato” Scheer (lead vocals), Alizon Lissance (keyboards, vocals), Myanna (alto/tenor sax, vocals), Glenn Shambroom (guitar, baritone sax), Randy Bramwell (bass, vocals), Steve Brown (drums, vocals), Mario Perrett (tenor sax, vocals), and Mark Paquin (tenor sax, trombone).

THE BLACK BOX, the home of the Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), is located at 15 West Central Street. Tickets to THE BLACK BOX Summer Concert Series events are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. A cash bar is available. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (508) 528-3370 or visit www.THEBLACKBOXonline.com.

In the News: Exelon expansions gets approvals; TSA changes screening for tablet devices

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The state issued two preliminary decisions Wednesday regarding the proposed Exelon expansion: one approving the project’s water supply plan, and another granting a “certificate of environmental impact and public interest.”
The Energy Facilities Siting Board decisions are tentative, according to state officials; the board will hear comments until Aug. 2, and then hold a hearing on Aug. 4 to make its determination. That hearing will be held at the Department of Public Utilities building in Boston.
The board approved the 200-megawatt expansion of Exelon’s Summer Street plant last year. One of the decisions concerns the air plan required for a certificate of environmental impact and public interest for that expansion.
Exelon had requested the certificate from the board, as it’s needed to move forward with the expansion. The Conservation Law Foundation, however, urged the board not to grant approval, claiming a greenhouse gas cap in the plan was unlikely to reduce gases emitted by the facility."

"Passengers at all U.S. airports will soon face new measures for screening electronic devices bigger than a cellphone.
Security officers will ask travelers in regular lanes to take all larger devices out of their bag and put them in a bin by themselves, similar to the screening of most travelers’ laptops.
Officials say it gives X-ray screeners a clearer picture of the devices.
The change won’t apply to Precheck lanes."

The Smartest Thing in Fur Pants (Video)

"Franklin Conservation Commission recently held a meeting featuring a report on beaver activity at DelCarte.

Whether you view them as an engineering marvel or creators of flooding challenges, and they can be both, beavers (Castor canadensis) are fascinating creatures right here in our community.

We thought you'd enjoy learning a little more about them in this PBS video."

"There are many questions that remain unanswered"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Research on 202 former football players found evidence of brain disease in nearly all of them, from athletes in the NFL, college and even high school.
It’s the largest update on chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a brain disease linked with repeated head blows.
But the report doesn’t confirm that the condition is common in all football players; it reflects high occurrence in samples at a Boston brain bank that studies CTE. Many donors or their families contributed because of the players’ repeated concussions and troubling symptoms before death.
“There are many questions that remain unanswered,” said lead author Dr. Ann McKee, a Boston University neuroscientist. “How common is this” in the general population and all football players?"

"a measured track forward to reducing pollution"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"THE ISSUE: Citing ongoing litigation, the Environmental Protection Agency has delayed new stormwater regulations intended to strengthen clean water protections in Massachusetts. THE IMPACT: The regulations, which are delayed one year, would affect 260 Massachusetts communities.
Reactions have been mixed following the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s announcement that it’s delaying a controversial permitting system intended to protect rivers and ponds by better controlling stormwater runoff.
The Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems permit, or MS4, would require 260 Massachusetts cities and towns to develop new stormwater management programs to satisfy the requirements of the federal Clean Water Act. Under the updated permit requirements, municipal governments would need to implement control measures to detect and eliminate illicit sewer connections to existing stormwater drains, conduct education and outreach programs, and manage runoff from construction sites and new developments."
