9th Charity Soccer Tournament - Soccer for Smiles - Feb 20-21

Our ninth charity soccer tournament, Soccer for Smiles, is coming up very soon, February 20 and 21. Several teams and individuals have already registered, but we are looking for a lot more. The more the merrier!

For those new to the tournament, it is a 3v3 tournament, all for fun and charity, that takes 2-3 hours on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on gender and age. The games are run like our Franklin Soccer School (FSS) in-class leagues and tournaments with FSS staff managing substitutions and games. Our goal is to make it fun for all and the teenage staff does a nice job of doing so!

To sign up and get more information, please head over to:
http://www.soccerforsmiles.org

Questions about the tournament can be sent to tournament@soccerforsmiles.org.

What is Downtown Sports? This is the name of the sports complex that includes our brand new, multi-sport court and our beloved Carpe Diem Field. The court will be open in a week or two. Details of it can be found on our webpage and on our Facebook page accessible through:  http://www.downtownsports.net

When you come to Soccer for Smiles, stop in at the new court!

Franklin Police Pledge to IACP's ONE MIND Campaign

The Franklin Police Department is pleased to announce that they have pledged to take action in support of the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s One Mind Campaign, with the intent to unite local communities, public safety organizations, and mental health organizations in such a way that the three become “of one mind.”

The One Mind Campaign seeks to ensure successful interactions between police officers and persons with mental illness. To join the campaign, the department has committed to implementing four promising practices over a 12–36 month timeframe. These four strategies include (1) establishing a clearly defined and sustainable partnership with one or more community mental health organization(s), (2) developing and implementing a model policy addressing police response to persons affected by mental illness, (3) training and certifying 100 percent of the agency’s sworn officers (and selected nonsworn staff, such as dispatchers) in Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety, and (4) providing Crisis Intervention Team training to a minimum of 20 percent of the agency’s sworn officers.

"The Franklin Police Department is committed to training our officers to better serve all members of our community, especially those who struggle with the challenges of mental illness." said Chief of Police Thomas Lynch "We see the One Mind Campaign as an example of our mission, vision, and values statement. We will continue to look for innovative ways to bring our officers closer to the community, and build trust with all whom we are charged with protecting."

The Franklin Police Department acknowledges the need to recognize and address recent societal, cultural, and technological changes that impact law enforcement responses to persons with mental illness. The strategies that the department has pledged to adopt create a unique opportunity to form a partnership with mental health organizations in the community. The committed efforts of both law enforcement agencies and the mental health community to reduce officer and civilian fatalities and injuries resulting from encounters between law enforcement officials and persons with mental illness are of critical importance. Pledging to support the One Mind Campaign is the first step towards creating a safer community for all.

Mansfield tops both FHS boys and girls basketball teams on Friday

Via HockomockSports and Twitter we share the results of the FHS sports action on Friday, Feb 9, 2018.

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 47 @ Mansfield, 59 – Final

Girls Basketball = Mansfield, 62 @ Franklin, 48 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Mansfield had a lot on the line when it traveled to its biggest rival on Friday night. A win against Franklin would clinch at least a share of a third straight league title for the Hornets, while senior center Meg Hill was only seven points away from reaching 1,000 for her career.
With a layup off a feed from Mady Bendanillo late in the first quarter, Hill (17 points, nine rebounds) made quick work of her accomplishment, but the Hornets needed to battle to the end to pull out a 62-48 victory that sealed a three-peat of Kelley-Rex titles.
“We had a chance to come over here to get a share of the title with a 1,000-point scorer, lets get it all done tonight,” said Mansfield coach Mike Redding. “I’m glad it’s over and now we can relax and a win against KP to win it outright takes a little pressure off when we play OA (in the league finale).”

FHS wrestling and girls hockey teams post wins on Thursday

Via HockomockSports and Twitter we share the results of the FHS sports action on Thursday, Feb 8, 2018.

Wrestling = Franklin, 33 @ North Attleboro, 18 – Final

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 4 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap

"Holding a 2-1 lead with under five minutes to go, the Canton boys hockey team was whistled for too many men on the ice.
It was just the second penalty of the game for the Dogs, but the visiting Panthers of Franklin High needed just 20 seconds in the second period on their first chance of the man advantage to cash in.
With the game on the line, Canton’s penalty showed it had learned its lesson from earlier on, coming up with a near perfect kill. The Bulldogs went on to score just over a minute after killing the penalty, and again with the net empty, to earn a 4-1 win in a clash of Davenport and Kelley-Rex division champions.
“That was a great kill,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “Bubba [McNeice] had a great game with the two goals but he was great on the kill. Jack Goyetch, Johnny [Hagan], Ryan [Nolte]…they all had a big kill. They learned their lesson from the first one around. They played very smart on that second kill, that was a huge part of the game.”

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap

"With two of the top defensive units in Canton and Franklin going head to head, goal scoring chances were going to be at a premium.
Franklin sophomore Jordan Dwyer took advantage of her chance, scoring the only goal of the game a minute into the final period to give the Panthers a 1-0 upset over Canton.
While Dwyer provided the lone tally of the game, it was Franklin freshman goalie Natalie Stott (35 saves) that put the Panthers in position to get the win.
“She made the difference,” said Franklin head coach Margie Burke of Stott. “Anytime its a one-goal game, you have to give it to the goalie. She gave us the opportunity to put one puck in the net. And it wasn’t until the third period. If [Canton] gets a couple goals early on, then we don’t even have that chance. She played great.”
