“Taps Across America” today at 3 PM

"Last year, CBS’s Steve Hartman asked musicians to play taps at 3 o'clock sharp. With Memorial Day parades and ceremonies canceled because of the pandemic, tens of thousands of buglers and trumpeters played to honor America’s patriots. It became one of the largest musical performances of all time.

From coast to coast, the musicians of all skill levels created “Taps Across America.” Hartman says, “I was not surprised, I was blown away that everybody felt as I did, that this is what America needed right now.”

Franklin's Event Outlook: May 28 - Jun 3, 2021

Memorial Day, traditional start to the summer time and this time also the relaxation  of the COVID-19 protocols for MA. Just because the protocols are being relaxed doesn't mean the virus is not here. It is still around, it can have deadly or long lasting health effects. If you are not vaccinated (yet) please do so.

Whether you are or not, please be careful. Good health enables a whole lot of good things to happen. A slim choice but a careful one to begin the re-opening. Electronics recycling, food truck and performances at THE BLACK BOX and of course, while no parade, the services at noon on the Town Common to recognize Memorial Day.

MA virtual ceremony for Memorial Day 2020 (video)

"Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito joined legislative leaders and local officials today to recognize Memorial Day in a virtual ceremony.

Secretary of Veterans’ Services Francisco Ureña, Senate President Karen Spilka, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, and Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs Co-Chairs Senator Walter F. Timility and Rep. Linda Dean Campbell provided video remarks, and the Massachusetts National Guard performed a special Tribute to the Fallen Wreath Ceremony.

The flags presented to Baker and Major General Gary W. Keefe by the Color Guard during this ceremony have flown above the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, and the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon, as a mark of solemn respect and in honor of the veterans lost during the COVID-19 public health emergency."

Senator Spilka: Memorial Day Message

Happy Memorial Day

As this holiday weekend approaches, I am more grateful than ever for all Americans who have served our country—especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the bonds of community we hold so dear.

Memorial Day is an opportunity to reflect, to remember, and to say thank you. We commemorate the legacy that our fallen heroines and heroes have left behind, and also offer our condolences to our Gold Star families.

The freedoms established and preserved by those who died for us come with responsibilities. We must live our lives, and be in community with one another, in a way so that those who died did not do so in vain. It is the best way we can honor their legacy.

Wishing you all safety and health this holiday weekend.

Warm regards,

In the News: "Franklin named Purple Heart Community"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
The town is now recognized as a Purple Heart Community, joining more than 90 other Massachusetts communities in honoring local veterans.

The designation was approved by the Town Council on Wednesday night, and honors recipients of the Purple Heart medal, which is presented to U.S. military service members who have been wounded or killed by enemy forces.

The medal - the nation’s oldest military award - was created by George Washington in 1782 and was originally called the “Badge for Military Merit.” Part of the designation entails celebrating Purple Heart Day, which is held on Aug. 8.

The designation also adds Franklin as a stop along the Purple Heart Trail, a national network of roads, bridges, highways and other monuments honoring soldiers who have been awarded a Purple Heart medal. There are currently designated sections in 45 states, including Guam.

The Proclamation making Franklin a Purple Heart Community did not need a Town Council vote on Wednesday. It was one of three proclamations made during the Wednesday session held via virtual meeting.

Looking for "volunteers to help replace American flags at veteran graves"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Memorial Day festivities in Franklin have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the town has still found a way to honor its veterans.

The annual Memorial Day breakfast scheduled for Friday, May 22, and the parade and ceremony at the Town Common on Monday, May 25, have each been canceled. But for Sunday, May 24, the VFW Post 3402 is seeking volunteers to help replace the American flags at veteran graves, something it usually does in collaboration with local Scouting groups, said Ernest Carruthers, of VFW Post 3402.

This year, however, Scouts are prohibited by their national organizations from participating in in-person events to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, he said.

“Area veterans and supporters of veterans have volunteered to make sure that our fallen veterans are remembered and that their final resting place receives a new American flag,” said Carruthers."

To volunteer, email Carruthers at ernestcarruthersjr@gmail.com and put “Flag Volunteer” in the subject line. All volunteers must wear face coverings. A short ceremony on Memorial Day will also be aired on Franklin Local TV, said Dale Kurtz, the town’s veterans service officer.
