FHS volleyball tops King Philip on Monday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, Sep 11, 2023.

Field Hockey = Franklin @ King Philip, 6:00 – time change
Given the weather the remainder of the evening, it seems the game did not play as there was no information from the FHS field hockey Twitter account since a hopeful one posted at 7:23 PM Monday -> of "Another lightening delay… we will get started again at 7:32….. Rain Go Away!"   https://twitter.com/FHS_FH_02038/status/1701375821984727356

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final
– Franklin went on the road and prevailed in a tight third game to complete a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-13, 26-24) against rival King Philip. Both Taylor Lacerda (15 digs, 10 kills, five aces) and Makayla Kuykendall (13 digs, 12 kills) had strong games for the Panthers. Junior Fiona Bailey had a team-high 10 kills for the Warriors while Cece Kilroy added five kills and three blocks, and Shea Mellman notched 13 digs.

"Great start to the season with a program sweep of a talented KP team! Always a good game when we play our cross town rivals" https://twitter.com/Franklin_VBall/status/1701362944523567431

HockomockSports.com field hockey preview of 2023 season - FHS

FRANKLIN
2022 Record: 18-2-1 (Kelley-Rex champion)
2022 Finish: Reached Div. 1 Elite 8
Coach: Michelle Hess

Franklin has been the dominant team in the Hockomock League for the past four seasons. Despite graduating several key players, including leading scorer Kaitlyn Carney, the Panthers return a talented roster that seems poised to challenge for a fifth straight league title and try to get back to the state semifinal, which they reached in 2021.

The Panthers will need to find extra scoring punch this season but have a host of players who are capable of finding the back of the net. Junior Haley Wernig, who recently committed to UMass Lowell, had 31 points in 2022 and looks ready for a breakout season. Junior Raena Crandall and senior Chloe Essam will add a scoring touch around the goal. Junior Emily Carney is a creative force in the midfield (also putting up 31 points as a sophomore) and she’s joined in the midfield by senior Sophia Cuneo, junior Sawyer Whitmore, and sophomore Maeve Rolston.

When you score 50 more goals than anyone else in the Hock, the attack gets plenty of attention, but the Panthers also allowed the second-fewest goals in the league, so defense is also a strength. Senior Lindsey Dennett leads the back line this season and her experience and reading of the game will be key. Juniors Maddie O’Brien and Ella Griffin and sophomore Ava Lucenta will give Franklin a solid defensive core. Sophomore Devon Barry had an impressive rookie season and she will split time in goal with junior Chloe Strassner.

Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “We are looking forward to defending our Hockomock League unbeaten streak and playing well in order to accomplish our team goal of winning the Hock for the fifth year in a row and going deep into the state tournament.”

FHS games to watch for Fall girls soccer, golf, and field hockey

Reminder that HockomockSports.com changed to a subscription model in July. I have a subscription to view and share the FHS results that they provide. If you want to view all the worth Hockomock League reporting they do, subscribing is a good thing. It is quite reasonable. The subscription link is provided below.

There is a series of "games to watch" for each of the sports this coming Fall season. I have selected the Franklin games that were highlighted thus far.

FHS girls soccer

OCTOBER 21ST – BISHOP FEEHAN @ FRANKLIN – 10:00AM
With the playoffs just around the corner, Franklin will take on Bishop Feehan in a battle of two teams with perennial title aspirations. Two of the most consistent programs in the state, each fall it’s expected that they will be among the top seeds in Div. 1. They met in the 2013 D1 South final, with Franklin winning 2-1, and last year were the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds. In late October, the Panthers will be aiming to clinch a fourth straight league title, but this will be a good non-league diversion to see how they match up with another state power. It’s scheduled for an early morning kick-off but it will be worth getting out of bed to see these teams square off in a playoff preview.

FHS golf

OCTOBER 11TH – FRANKLIN @ KING PHILIP – 3:00
Speaking of heavyweight battles, here’s the Kelley-Rex’s version of that. Just days after the reigning Davenport champs clash, Franklin and King Philip will hit the links at Wentworth Hills for their second meeting of the season. It’s very possible this one will have severe title implications as both teams only have one division match left after this meeting. Both the Panthers and Warriors return most of their starting lineups so expectations are high for this season. The winner of this one will pick up some momentum heading into the championship at Thorny Lea.

For the full listing of golf matches to watch

FHS field hockey

SEPTEMBER 13TH – FOXBORO @ FRANKLIN – TBA
This should be an early-season treat for the second straight year. The two defending division champs will go head-to-head on the Beaver Street Turf in the second week of the regular season. The Panthers rolled through the majority of its league schedule last year, except for one team: Foxboro. The Warriors were the lone Hock team to take a point away as the two teams battled to a scoreless draw early on in the season. Foxboro is always very strong defensively and this was a testament to that based on Franklin’s offensive success the rest of the season. This will be another great battle.

OCTOBER 16TH – KING PHILIP @ FRANKLIN – 3:45
Franklin has won four straight Kelley-Rex championships in a row and their biggest challenger during that span has been King Philip. The Panthers will travel to Wrentham in the opening week of games so that will be a good early-season test but we’ve circled the second meeting between the two. It will mark the start of the final stretch of five games against division opponents so that will inflate its importance. KP graduated a large senior class but has a lot of their weapons back in the fold this year as they try to dethrone Franklin.

Round of 8: Franklin (#5) plays at Wachusett (#4) on Veteran Day at 11 AM

** Volleyball = Division 1 = #13 Acton-Boxboro, 1 @ #4 Franklin, 3 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"When Franklin earned the final point of the match to seal a win, their traditional jubilation was replaced by a sigh of relief.

The Panthers were three points away from completing a sweep of #13 Acton-Boxborough before the visitors rattled off a late run and prolonged the match with a win in the third set.

Franklin played its best volleyball in the fourth set to create its lone double-digit lead of the match. And once again, just three points away from victory, the Revolution came charging back. Acton-Boxborough used an 8-2 run, fighting off five straight match points to get within three points. But a handling error gave Franklin the final point and the Panthers closed out a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21) win in a Division 1 Round of 16 matchup.

“I think across the board, we could have done better at pretty much everything,” said Franklin head coach Samantha Redmond. ”I think we all felt it, I think we’re all aware of the fact that we could have done better. At this point in the year, we should do better.”

MIAA bracket says FHS will play Methuen at a date/time TBD

Field Hockey = Division 1 = #28 Barnstable, 0 @ #5 Franklin, 2 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Franklin has made no secret of its desire to make another deep playoff run, but, even for a team that reached the state semifinal a year ago, it’s natural to feel some extra nerves ahead of the opening tournament game, especially when facing an unfamiliar foe with a still relatively young roster.

The Panthers got a stiff challenge in Friday’s first round game at the Beaver St. Field. Barnstable, the No. 28 seed, was able to withstand Franklin’s pressure for long stretches of the game, keeping within a goal until the final five minutes of a 2-0 loss.

It was the type of battle that can be a reminder for a team that scored 129 goals in the regular season and has gone unbeaten in more than 60 straight league games that things are different once the tournament kicks off.

“You never know,” said Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “I’ve never played them before, I didn’t know anything about them, you can only watch so much film, and they show up and they’re better than I expected, especially being the 28 seed.”

MIAA bracket says FHS will play Needham at a date/time TBD

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

– A second quarter explosion led the Panthers to a big win at home, capping an undefeated (15-0-1) league schedule for Franklin. Shaw Downing scored twice in the first quarter and finished with a hat trick, Kaitlyn Carney and Payten Crandall each had a pair of goals, and Haley Wernig, Kaeley Dubriske, Ella Griffin, and Delaney Hess each scored once.

FHS field hockey, volleyball and both girls and boys soccer teams post wins on Monday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, October 24, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Soccer = Franklin, 1 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin converted a penalty kick 15 minutes into the second half to get a win on the road over Attleboro and clinch the Kelley-Rex division title. An unlucky hand ball on a service into the area from Noah Cain gave the visitors a chance from the spot. Senior Trey Lovell stepped up and buried a low shot for the only goal of the game.

Girls Soccer = Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 4 – Final
– Anya Zub’s hat trick pushed the Panthers to a big home win and maintained their lead at the top of the Kelley-Rex. Selene Hammad opened the scoring for Franklin just two minutes into the game, with Zub picking up the assist. Zub would score the next three goals. Kelly O’Connor, Olivia Costa, and Hammad had the assists. Jamie Davies added a late goal for the Bombardiers, converting a penalty after Tatum O’Brien’s nice run into the box drew a foul. Alexis Campbell made double digit saves in the loss.

Field Hockey = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– Attleboro kept it close, trailing just 2-0 at halftime, but Franklin scored a late goal in the third quarter and two more early in the fourth to pull away for the win. After a scoreless first quarter, Emily Carney scored three minutes into the second (from Kaitlyn Carney and Sophia Cuneo) and then again with under a minute to play until halftime (from Haley Wernig and Cuneo). Payten Crandell (from Kaitlyn Carney) pushed the Panthers’ lead to 3-0 with just over a minute to play in the third, and both Wernig and Kaitlyn Carney scored inside the first five minutes to make it 5-0. Siany Ortez made 10 saves in net for the Bombardiers.

Volleyball = Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"It’s getting crowded at the top of the Kelley-Rex division standings.
Despite falling behind after an epic opening set, Franklin volleyball rallied for three straight wins to secure a 3-1 victory over Attleboro (33-35, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19), moving the Panthers into a three-way tie in first place along with the Bombardiers and King Philip, who also won on Monday.
All three teams split their respective season series and sit at 13-2 in league play with one match left, none of which are against one another.
The battle between the Panthers and Bombardiers — a clash of two top 10 teams in Division 1 in the latest MIAA rankings, and a rematch of a superb five-set thriller from earlier this season — started with a first set that neither side wanted to lose, as seen by the score."

– In a battle of two of the top teams in the entire state, Walpole earned a 6-2 win over the Panthers. Franklin thought it scored first when a deflected shot found the back of the net but the shot was ruled dangerous and the goal was wiped off. Walpole took a 1-0 lead into halftime before Kaitlyn Carney found the back of the net to make it 1-1. The Porkers scored back-to-backs but the Panthers got one back before the end of the third when Shaw Downing redirected a shot from Carney to make it 3-2.
