FHS girls and boys soccer, golf, field hockey, and football teams all post wins on Friday

Boys Soccer = Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 2 – Final 

– In a battle of the top two teams in the Kelley-Rex division, Franklin used a late-winner to take over first place in the division at the midway point of the season. The Panthers got off to a great start at home as Trey Lovell finished off an assist from Will Kryzak in the sixth minute for the early lead. Attleboro junior Alex Vecchioli converted a pass from Esvin Morales to bring the visitors level in the 15th minute. The game stayed level for the majority of the game before Kryzak finished off a great pass from Andrew O’Neill in the 77th minute to secure the win.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final 

– Kelly O’Connor scored a pair of goals to help Franklin bounce back from its loss on Wednesday and to keep pace with KP in the league title race. It was an even first half, but the Panthers took the lead in the final five minutes, O’Connor nodding home a Bridget Leo corner. With Attleboro pushing for an equalizer, Franklin was able to strike twice more after the break. Anya Zub doubled the lead a little more than halfway through the second half, with O’Connor picking up the assist. O’Connor then secured her brace and her third point of the night with a goal with nine minutes to play. Alexis Campbell made six big saves that kept Attleboro in the game, while Rachel Welch made seven stops for the Panthers. Attleboro coach Steve Santos was proud of the way the team kept battling to the end.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 8 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final 

– Holding a 3-0 lead at halftime, Franklin pulled away with two more goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth to finish with an 8-0 lead. Emily Carney scored a hat trick for the Panthers, scoring once in each of the first three quarters, while Payten Crandall had two goals and one assist in the win. Kaitlyn Carney (one assist), Haley Wernig, and Sydney Rogan (one assist) each scored once in the win. Devon Barry and Megan Sullivan (two saves) combined for the shutout in net.

Volleyball = Franklin, 2 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final 

– Attleboro rattled off three straight points in the final set to turn a one-point deficit into a 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13) win over visiting Franklin, giving the Bombardiers one of their biggest wins in program history. Julia Leonardo was a monster at the net for the Bombardiers, putting down 36 kills to go along with 20 digs to pace the attack, while Sadie Whiwtmarsh had a huge showing with 23 kills. Addie Shelton added 11 kills and 12 digs in the win. Natalie Brojek orchestrated the offense for the hosts, dishing out 49 assists to go along with 15 digs and three blocks.

Golf = Attleboro, 175 @ Franklin, 145 – Final 

– Brendan Collins had a consistent day out on the links, shooting a medalist round to lead the Panthers to a win over Attleboro. Collins carded a 36 to lead the way, CJ Steel shot a 38, and both Caden Sullivan (one birdie) and Jack Hagerty (one birdie) each came in at 38. Bradley Martin led the Bombardiers with a 43.

Football = Franklin, 21 @ North Attleboro, 20 – Final

1Q: (NA) Nathan Shultz 49-yard rush, Austin Clemente XP good; (F) Jase Lyons 24-yard pass to Derek Dubriske, Garrett Portesi XP good.

"When Cole Sidwell intercepted a pass inside his own 30 with 36 seconds remaining, the Franklin bench exploded onto the field assuming that the victory was sealed. But, two penalty flags sat on the Community Field grass and, after a lengthy discussion between the officials, off-setting penalties meant that North Attleboro would have one last chance.

Facing fourth and 13 from the Franklin 49, North quarterback Chase Frisoli dropped back one more time and fired a deep ball to Jovany Rivera down the right sideline. The North receiver had a step on the corner, but he just wasn’t able to haul in the pass.

After a giant exhale, the Franklin sideline exploded into life again, knowing that all it would take was one kneel down and the win was theirs. The Panthers survived Friday’s league opener 21-20, earning their first win at North since 1992.

“It’s two top 10 teams, Franklin coach Eain Bain said. “I don’t care if we won by half a point, as long as we get out of here with a win. We knew coming in here there would be adversity tonight, fortunately we took advantage of some things in the first half. As a team effort, I thought it was a great win.”

"What a difference two weeks can make. 

After starting their league schedule with a 5-1 setback on the road at Oliver Ames on September 9th, the Franklin boys soccer team has found its groove by rattling off a five-game unbeaten streak, the latest a 2-0 decision on the road at North Attleboro for their fourth shutout in the past five contests. 

The win keeps the Panthers in a tie with Attleboro atop the table of the Kelley-Rex division heading into the midway point of the season next week. 

“I’m not sure what has changed…Oliver Ames is a good team and on that day, we didn’t show up,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis, now in his 52nd season at the helm. “I was upset after that game but I just had to keep reminding myself that we aren’t that bad. I really think we have a good team.”

Girls Soccer = King Philip, 2 @ Franklin, 1 – Final 

– KP bounced back from a loss to OA by handing Franklin its first loss of the season. Heidi Lawrence scored a brace for the Warriors, who moved back into a first-place tie with the Panthers in the division. Lawrence scored 13 minutes before halftime after a nice run that was picked out by Ella Pisani’s diagonal ball. Norah Anderson got Franklin’s goal off a Katie Ewald corner, but then Lawrence popped up with the winner five minutes from full time. Pisani again provided the killer pass.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 9 @ Taunton, 0 – Final 

– Franklin scored five goals in the opening quarter and never went back in a big win on the road over Taunton. Sophia Cuneo opened the scoring less than a minute in, Sydney Rogan and Payten Crandall each scored once, and Haley Wernig scored two goals inside the final minute to give the Panthers a big lead early. Kaitlyn Carney, who scored two goals in the second half, assisted on Franklin’s first four goals. Lindsay Dennett and Brooke Taylor (first career goal) added a goal each for Franklin.

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final 

– Franklin continued its undefeated start to the season with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) on the road at Taunton. Makayla Kuykendall had a big game for the Panthers with 11 kills, eight digs, and four aces while Taylor Lacerda continued her streak of strong performances with 17 kills and 11 digs.

Boys Soccer = Franklin 1, @ Oliver Ames, 5 – Final 

– Oliver Ames raced out to a three-goal lead by halftime and then tacked on two goals inside the final 15 minutes to secure a 5-1 win over Franklin in its season opener. Five different players scored for the Tigers, starting with a goal just over five minutes into the game. Sophomore Luke Churchill lifted a ball over the top of the defense and junior Ryan Linhares ran onto it and calmly chipped the oncoming keeper on the bounce. Less than 10 minutes later, sophomore Casey Milliken played in a through ball to junior Ryan Carney and he finished low to the far post. OA made it 3-0 in the 35th minute as Hector Bucio was first to a corner from Linhares, hitting a low one-timer into the back of the net from inside the area.

Franklin had a strong start to the second half and played equal to the hosts. The Panthers pulled one back in the 47th minute after good pressure from juniors Andrew O’Neill and Hansy Jacques ended up in a combination between the two and the latter smashed a low left-footed shot off the far post and in. After some more even play, OA cashed in on a Franklin turnover. Andrew Martins took down a failed clearance connected with Milliken, who fired a cross/shot that was spilled in the area and Mirray Dasilva was first to the loose ball and fired it in. Michael MacAdam came up with a turnover at midfield and quickly hit a counter pass up to Milliken that drew Franklin goalie Griffin Tolonen well off his line. Tolonen got the ball but it deflected right to Martins, who passed one into the back of the net.

Girls Soccer = Oliver Ames, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final

"When Franklin head coach Tom Geysen left practice on Thursday evening, he didn’t know what to expect from his team when it lined up to face Oliver Ames in the season opener. Once things kicked off for real though, the Panthers eased their coach’s fears and welcomed him back to the sidelines with a win.

Franklin scored twice in the opening half and used its typically stout defense to earn a 2-0 victory over a young Tigers team, winning Friday afternoon’s battle of defending league champions at Pisini Field.

“I knew what was going to happen in the second half because that’s how they play and I told these kids ahead of time, they’re going to play long ball, they’re going to push to the wings, and that’s what they did,” said Geysen, who was forced to miss last season because of health issues. “I thought defensively, the kids in the back played really well.”

2022 Hockomock Football: Players to Watch on Defense - FHS' Quintina

HockomockSports.com has published its listing of Football Defense Players to Watch for the fall 2022 season. We share the FHS athlete and link to the full listing below.

NICK QUINTINA, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

Franklin had its best season in over a decade last year, and it had one of the most dynamic offenses in the state. But the Panthers also had a terrific defense, allowing just over 15 points per game (and an even more impressive just 10.4 against in league play). The Panthers have some key pieces from that defense back this year, including middle linebacker Nick Quintina. At 5’10, 205 pounds, Quintina isn’t the biggest linebacker out there but he does it all for the Panthers. He’s good when he drops back and helps in pass coverage, does a nice job reading the play against the run, and can get downhill to attack the ball carrier. If Franklin looks to make it back-to-back Kelley-Rex division title, they’ll need more of the same from their defense, and having Quintina in the heart of it will certainly help.

2022 Hockomock Football: Players to Watch on Offense - FHS' Davis

HockomockSports.com has published its listing of Football Offense Players to Watch for the fall 2022 season. We share the FHS athlete and link to the full listing below.

LUKE DAVIS, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

Franklin had one of the most dynamic offenses in the state last year but one of the only skill players back this year is senior Luke Davis. Although his stats weren’t among the league leaders, he was a vital piece to Franklin’s passing game and a reliable target for quarterback Jared Arone. Now Davis will be one of the Panthers’ primary pass catchers and among the most seasoned receivers in the league. He will also be working with a new quarterback as Jase Lyons takes over. We’ve seen Davis line up all over the field in the past two seasons, going over the middle from the slot or taking corners one-on-one down the sideline. Wherever he lines up this year, he will be a handful for opposing defenses and someone they will certainly need to game plan for. If he gets single coverage on the outside, you can expect him to win a lot of those battles.

Hockomock League Football: 2022 Kelley-Rex Division Preview - Franklin

HockomockSports.com has published its outlook for the Kelly-Rex Division football teams for the fall 2022 season. We share the FHS outlook and link to the full divisional outlook below.

FRANKLIN
2021 Record: 10-1 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
Coach: Eian Bain

Key/Returning Players: Jase Lyons, Sr., QB/S; Luke Davis, Sr., WR/CB; Grayson Hunter, Sr., TE; Ben Papa, Sr., OL; Ben Ryan, Jr., OL; Leo Meuse, Soph., OL; Jay Gulla, Sr., DL; Emmett Lackey, Sr., DL; Julian Rampino, Soph., DL; Nick Quintina, Sr., LB; Luke Sidwell, Sr., CB; Devine Johnson, Sr., CB;

Outlook: Franklin was not only the best team in the Kelley-Rex division last year, winning its first league title since 2009, but also proved to be one of the top teams in the state. The Panthers were a win away from a spot in the Super Bowl, going toe-to-toe with Springfield Central in the state semifinal. This season, the Panthers will have to overcome the graduation of a lot of skill position players to keep the positive momentum that the program has shown over the past few seasons.

Last year’s offensive group was as good as any in the state and it showed. This season, Franklin will have a lot of new faces and a lot of versatile athletes that will be part of the game plan. Senior Jase Lyons will take over at quarterback and is a dual threat with his legs and his arm. Senior Luke Davis will be one of the primary targets out wide along with junior wideout Derek Dubriske and senior tight end Grayson Hunter. The graduation of Mack Gulla opens space for new running backs to step up. Juniors Mike Davide and Cody Howard are backs to watch out for this year. Senior Ben Papa will lead the offensive line with junior Ben Ryan and sophomore Leo Meuse adding depth and size. Senior Garrett Portesi will be back on kicking duties and gives Franklin a consistent source of points.

While the offense got a lot of attention last season, Franklin’s defense allowed fewer points than anyone else in the league. The secondary was one of the biggest strengths in 2021 and should be again this year. Senior Devine Johnson is a lockdown corner, while classmates Luke Sidwell, Bobby Padula, and Davis all are playmakers in the passing game. Junior Connor Klawson will add depth in that position. The linebacking group is led by senior Nick Quintina, who will make plays in the middle, and Howard will be a new face in that position. Senior Emmett Lackey will control the defensive line, while senior Jay Gulla is a constant threat on the edge and sophomore Julian Rampino gives another big athlete at defensive end.

“We are taking this one day at a time,” said Franklin coach Eian Bain. “Last year was a whirlwind, and culmination of many years of hard work. It is important not to lose sight of the process that got us to such great accomplishments. It remains all about the process.”

• Mack Gulla - FHS | SENIOR - The Hockomock MVP rushed for more than 1,700 yds with 16 TDs, leading Franklin to a 10-1 season and league title while snapping doubledigit losing streaks to Mansfield and King Philip. Gulla finished his career with 33 touchdowns #BGFall2021
• Coach of Year -> Eian Bain - DIVISION 1: FHS - his Panthers were perhaps the best public school football team in the state, winning the Hock’s Kelley-Rex Division, reaching the state semifinals and finishing 10-1, including a Thanksgiving W over D2 state finalist KP #BGFall2021

Field Hockey

• Kaitlyn Carney - FHS | JUNIOR - Despite being the focus of many defenders, the junior found ways to break through, scoring 37 goals with 18 assists, leading all Hockomock scorers. 5 of those goals came in the Panthers’ postseason journey to the state semifinal #BGFall2021

Girls Soccer

• Anya Zub - FHS | SOPH - After scoring 3 goals and 4 assists as a freshman, the soph’s impressive season (20 goals and 6 assists) was the catalyst of the Panthers’ Hockomock championship. Zub’s scoring touch netted her league all-star and First Team EMass selections #BGFall2021

Volleyball

• Athlete of Year - Cailyn Mackintosh - D1: FHS | SENIOR - The Hockomock MVP was the focal point for the Panthers, who earned the top seed in the D1 tournament. Mackintosh registered 535 assists and 70 aces and finished her career with 1,387 assists in 3 varsity seasons #BGFall2021

Jared Arone – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Jared Arone had a standout season at quarterback for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers, guiding the team to one of their best seasons in program history. Arone was very confident in the pocket and spread the ball around to a talented group of receivers. He rarely made mistakes (only two interceptions) and put a lot of pressure on defenses with his ability to read the coverage and find open receivers — and deliver on the mark. “The leader of the Kelley-Rex’s leading offense, Jared threw for over 2,000 yards while completing 68% of his passes,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “His 28 touchdown throws compared to only two interceptions had Jared as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the state.”

Mack Gulla – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Mack Gulla was a workhorse for the Panthers this season, not only adding a key element in the running game to balance the offense but emerging as one of the most dangerous backs in the Hockomock League. The Panthers have had a strong passing game for a bit but Gulla really made the offense as good as it was with his strong running, often overpowering his way through the defense. “The focal point of the Franklin attack, Mack ran for 1,700 yards on 250 carries,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Mack’s 17 touchdowns were among the leaders in the league. Also a threat out of the backfield, Mack had over 200 yards receiving and while being a workhorse on the ground.”

Shane Kindred – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Shane Kindred was one of the toughest covers around, not only in the Hockomock League but in the surrounding region and in all of Division 1. After developing some chemistry during the Fall 2 season, Kindred and quarterback Jared Arone were in sync throughout the entire year, leading to a Kelley-Rex division title and the top seed in the D1 State tournament. It seemed like Kindred was a threat to take it to the house almost every time he got his hands on the ball. “Settings school records for receptions (59) and yards (1,020), Shane found the end zone 12 times on the year,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Shane had a knack for making big plays in the passing game, while also playing special teams for the Panthers.”

Will Tracey – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Will Tracey had a breakout season at receiver for the Panthers, who won their first-ever Kelley-Rex division title and first Hockomock crown since 2009. Tracey joined fellow weapons Shane Kindred and Mack Gulla to make the Panthers one of the most well-balanced and dangerous offenses in the league and Division 1. If defenses tried to focus on the other options, Tracey continually made defenses pay. He also came up with some of his biggest performances in some of the biggest moments of the year. “Will seemed to come up big and in the biggest moments,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain.”Tracey hulled in 41 receptions for 551 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the playoffs, and in big league games, he shined the most.”

Jack Marino – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Jack Marino was one of the unsung heroes of the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers this season, emerging as a reliable and depending option at linebacker for head coach Eian Bain. He was a key piece of a much improved Franklin defense, starring at middle linebacker. He will be remembered in program history for his fourth down stop against KP on Thanksgiving, clinching the Panthers’ first win over the Warriors in a decade on the holiday. “Jack Marino always came through in the biggest moments for the league-leading defense,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Eighty-seven tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and six passes defended made Jack a stalwart on a dominant defense.”

Joe Tirrell – Franklin – Senior

Franklin senior Joe Tirrell was very dependable for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers, shining on the defensive end of the ball for head coach Eian Bain. Tirrell was like a coach on the field for the Panthers, organizing a defense that allowed a league-low 167 points against (under 16 per game). Not only could he drop back in coverage and make plays, but his speed was also utilized in blitz packages to pressure opposing defenses. “One of the most versatile defenders in the Hock, Joe Tirrell amassed 78 tackles to go with 10 QB pressures, two forced fumbles, five passes defended, and four tackles for loss,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain.

Garrett Portesi – Franklin – Junior

Franklin junior Garrett Portesi made the most of his opportunities in his first year as the starting kicker for the Panthers. Franklin had a very reliable kicking game the past couple of seasons and Portesi continued that trend this season. He was very consistent in the kicking game, getting a lot of work after Franklin scored 340 points this season. His kickoffs also helped the Panthers often win the field position battle. “His first year on the varsity roster, and the second year overall playing football, Garrett was as clutch as could be in the kicking game,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “With key field goals against Milford and Methuen, he helped secure big wins along the way to a 10-1 record.”

COACH OF THE YEAR

"Franklin head coach Eian Bain has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Football Coach of the Year. Bain led the Panthers to their first ever Kelley-Rex title and first Hock title since 2009 as well as the top seed in the Division 1 state tournament. 

The Panthers went 10-1 on the season, going a perfect 5-0 against division opponents to win the Kelley-Rex. Franklin’s lone loss came in the D1 State Semifinal in a shootout with Springfield Central, who went on to win the D1 State Final. Franklin was the top defense in the league with under 16 points per game allowed and the top offense in the Kelley-Rex with over 30 points per game. 

In the playoffs, Franklin dominated both Braintree and Metheun to reach the semifinals. Franklin went toe-to-toe with the Golden Eagles, Bain helping the Panthers respond almost every time before falling 60-49."

Franklin TV: Franklin v King Phillip – a Win!

Booyahh for our Panthers.

The start? Déjà vu – all over again. Ugh!

King Philip forced a quick Panthers three-and-out. Then KP’s Gately sailed up the middle for 64 yards. Three plays later, senior QB Charlie Grant shot straight to Drew Danson deep in the end zone for first blood in under four minutes.

Then more bad news.  The Panthers fumbled on first carry (oops) and KP glommed the ball in Franklin territory. Four plays put the Warriors on the 1 yard line. Two more, and Grant smuggled it in for a 14-0 lead with 6 minutes remaining in Q1.

Then, that first ray of hope.

Panthers pulled a perfect flea flicker to Gulla and back to Jared Arone, then  to Shane Kindred for a huge 85-yard touchdown with a minute and change remaining in Q1. The Warriors blocked the point, but Franklin was on the board – and in the game, 14-6. That’s how the tide begins to turn. (Yesss.  We can do this.)

Panthers brought focused football, pulling to 19 – a point under a tough Warrior team over the next 2 quarters. More touchdowns both ways in Q3. The last, with a 2-point conversion put Panthers up 27-20 going into Q4. With 2 minutes remaining, Franklin senior Jack Marino denied King Philip’s 4th and 1 try, locking up the Panthers 27-20 win over the Warriors in their 61st traditional Turkey Day tussle.

With this win, Franklin clinches its first-ever Hockomock League Kelley-Rex division title and first league crown since 2009. (Congrats!)  It also snaps a 10-game Thanksgiving skid and an 18-game overall streak to the Warriors.

Yes, we’ll have another round of stuffing, thank you very much.

Big congrats to the Panthers for a great day of winning football.

FHS football team holds off KP To clinch Kelley-Rex crown

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the  recap of FHS football vs. King Philip in the 61st annual Thanksgiving game.  

Before the main course of turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, the Franklin football team helped themselves to an early serving of stuffing.

Franklin senior Jack Marino denied King Philip on a 4th and 1 situation just beyond midfield with two minutes left in the game to help the Panthers secure a 27-20 win over the Warriors in the 61st Thanksgiving clash between the two teams.

With the win, Franklin clinches its first-ever Hockomock League Kelley-Rex division title and first league crown since 2009. It also snaps a 10-game Thanksgiving skid and an 18-game overall streak to the Warriors, their first win over KP since the same year they won their last title.

“It’s incredibly satisfying, and I’m obviously proud as the coach but I’m just happy for the kids and the town,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “The last couple of years, this game has been good and there’s been some close ones and not so close ones. Eventually, these are games we have to win to move our program forward.

FHS football falls to Springfield Central In offensive showdown 49-60

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap of the FHS football match vs. Springfield Central in the D1 Final Four on Saturday at Shrewsbury High School. 

"Springfield Central’s offense delivered punch after punch all throughout its D1 State Semifinal clash with Franklin.

The Panthers kept getting back up.

The Golden Eagles and its high-flying offense came as advertised, scoring eight touchdowns with over 500 yards of total offense. Central scored on five straight drives in the first half and then three straight in the second half. A lot of teams would have folded, at least at some point.

But not this Franklin team. Not these Panthers.

The top-seeded Panthers had four first half touchdowns of their own and three more in the second, cutting the deficit to just three at 44-41 in the fourth quarter."
