US Census: Now hiring for the 2020 Census

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of workers for temporary jobs available nationwide in advance of the 2020 Census.

The 2020 Census Jobs website allows applicants to apply for a range of positions, including recruiting assistants, office operations supervisors, clerks, census field supervisors and census takers. The positions will be located across 248 Area Census Offices nationwide and offer flexible work hours, including daytime, evenings and weekends.

Available jobs:

  • Recruiting assistants travel throughout geographic areas to visit with community-based organizations, attend promotional events and conduct other recruiting activities.
  • Office operations supervisors assist in the management of office functions and day-to-day activities in one or more functional areas, including payroll, personnel, recruiting, field operations and support.
  • Clerks perform various administrative and clerical tasks to support various functional areas, including payroll, personnel, recruiting, field operations and support.
  • Census field supervisors conduct fieldwork to support and conduct on-the-job training for census takers and/or to follow-up in situations where census takers have confronted issues, such as not gaining entry to restricted areas.
  • Census takers work in the field. Some field positions require employees to work during the day to see addresses on buildings. Other field positions require interviewing the public, so employees must be available to work when people are usually at home, such as in the evening and on weekends.

What is the Lifelong Learning Institute?

"The Lifelong Learning Institute is the community education branch of the Franklin Public Schools. Lifelong Learning provides educational experiences for Franklin residents (and those from surrounding towns) from pre-school through retirement and beyond. This all-encompassing mission is accomplished through the efforts of dedicated employees of the Franklin Public Schools, and is supplemented with the talents of a number of our “friends in education” who partner and collaborate with us. The Lifelong Learning Institute is a fully functioning part of the Franklin Public Schools and has been in existence since the fall of 1998.
Two existing, stand alone programs, Adult Education and Summer School, were tapped to provide the foundation for the Lifelong Learning Institute. Adult Education has grown significantly and is now known as Adult Education and Community Learning. Summer School is now referred to as The Summer Program and enjoys enrollments of 2000 students annually.
Schools are among the greatest resources a community has to offer its residents. In Franklin, the Lifelong Learning Institute provides opportunities for Town residents (and those from surrounding towns), who may or may not have school-aged children, to access a level of educational support, a sense of belonging and a feeling of ownership, while simultaneously enjoying a quality learning experience."

Tri-County Regional to host Manufacturing and Robotics Open House to celebrate Manufacturing Month

On Tuesday, October 25, Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School will celebrate October as "Manufacturing Month" by hosting an Open House for its Manufacturing and Engineering Technology programs.

Tri-County plans to showcase its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and equipment. The event is expected to draw legislators, business owners, parents, and any others who may be interested in seeing new education, career, and business opportunities.
The Open House will include presentations by Tri-County students, as well as administrators from the Wentworth Institute of Technology. Wentworth has offered evening courses inside Tri-County's Manufacturing Center of Excellence since 2014.
"Tri-County students construct and create new products every year by utilizing a state-of-the-art manufacturing lab that provides the tools they need to make their ideas real. Thanks to their dedicated teachers and administration officials, those students will be uniquely prepared to contribute to our manufacturing sector on the day they graduate." said Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III
"We are trying to change the perception of today's modern manufacturing," said Representative Jeffrey N. Roy (D-Franklin). "Today's manufacturing is clean, technology driven, innovative, and most importantly well-paying and accessible. Today's manufacturing is often dominated by the Biotech, Medical, and Robotic industries, and Tri-County High School is doing a great job at meeting the need for skilled workers head-on."
"Tri-County has created an Advanced Manufacturing Program that will not only train high school students during the day, but through a partnership with Wentworth Institute of Technology, will also train unemployed or underemployed adults at night," Said Tri-County Superintendent Stephen Dockray. "Tri County is providing the skilled labor desperately needed in the manufacturing industry."
"The manufacturing and robotics programs at Tri-County are shining examples of modern manufacturing education in our community," said Senator Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland). "Manufacturing is a significant driver of the Massachusetts economy, and these students are learning necessary skills to create, innovate and thrive in the workforce."
Many Massachusetts residents are unaware that manufacturing is alive and well across the Commonwealth. Massachusetts is home to more than 7,000 manufacturers, providing over 250,000 jobs to its citizens. These innovative manufacturers make groundbreaking products for global consumption.
Jobs in the Manufacturing Industry offer flexibility, excitement, and good pay. While companies seek smart, dedicated workers to fill job openings, Tri-County seeks out new ways to provide students with the training and employability skills necessary for success in this evolving industry.
Tri-County's Open House will expand awareness of the school's Career Programs. Several of these programs address the growing need for manufacturing workers in Massachusetts by offering students hands-on training that addresses the technological advances of the industry.
The School encourages all interested parties to visit.

Technology Gives, Technology Takes

For any one following Facebook updates, this is the season for college graduations and college visits for those high school juniors. High school seniors should have made their decision by now and are getting ready to graduate in a couple of weeks.

Where one goes to further their education is just one piece in the puzzle. What courses or line of study one choses helps to determine what they will be capable of doing.

NPR has published a set of four interactive graphs to show the changes in occupations over the past 150 years and in particular how those changes were due to machines.

For hundreds of years, people have been talking about machines taking jobs from people. Less often discussed: machines creating new jobs.
In the first part of the 20th century, agricultural technology — the tractor, chemical fertilizers — meant a single farmer could suddenly grow much more food. So we didn't need as many farmers. Technology destroyed a huge number of farming jobs.

MassBudget: Jobs & Workforce Programs in the State Budget - two new resources

MassBudget   Information.
  Participation.
Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center  Democracy.

Jobs and Workforce Programs in the State Budget: Two new resources
One of the most important things we do together through government is to support the development of people's skills to enable more of us to find good jobs, provide for our families, and contribute to the Massachusetts economy. With support from SkillWorks, MassBudget has created a new resource, our online Jobs and Workforce Budget, which provides easily accessible funding information and clear descriptions of the workforce development programs funded by our state budget.

In connection with the launch of this on-line resource, we are releasing a new brief, "Investing in People: Jobs and Workforce Training in the Massachusetts State Budget," that builds on resources in the Jobs and Workforce Budget. This brief analyzes state support over the past decade, finding that these programs have been cut by about a third since FY 2001 (adjusted for inflation).

Jobs and Workforce support via budget
Jobs and Workforce support via budget

Using the Jobs and Workforce Budget you can:

  • Learn about all the programs in a particular area: Workforce Development, Education, Workers with Disabilities, and Youth Development.

  • Within those areas, you can look at individual programs, like the Workforce Training Fund. For each program, you will find a full description, state funding history, proposals for future funding, and links to other online resources.
If you want to understand how we support workforce development through our state budget, please visit the Jobs and Workforce Budget and read "Investing in People: Jobs and Workforce Training in the Massachusetts State Budget."
The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MassBudget) produces policy research, analysis, and data-driven recommendations focused on improving the lives of low- and middle-income children and adults, strengthening our state's economy, and enhancing the quality of life in Massachusetts.
