Jefferson Elementary Students ‘Tackle’ Public Art with New "Traveling School of Fish” Installation at the Franklin Sculpture Park.

On June 7, 2023, Jefferson students, family, staff and the greater Franklin community gathered for a rededication ceremony at the Franklin Sculpture Park. The park first opened in 2014, the installation "The School of Fish", previously donated by the (now closed) Franklin Art Center, had appeared weathered due to time. 

Seeing an opportunity to refresh the installation and involve the community, local artist and Jefferson parent, Amy Adams partnered with Franklin Public Schools Art Director, Adam Gooder, Jefferson Art Teacher Caroline Whelan, Jefferson Principal Stefani Wasik and Town Administrator Jamie Hellen to re-imagine the installation.

Adams worked to clear and prepare each individual fish, Jefferson staff then worked with students to create the new art. The refreshed installation, retitled "Traveling School of Fish", will be updated yearly by new students within the district. During the dedication, Adams spoke with the students and encouraged "all of the little artists here to keep shining your lights. They are beautiful and bright."

This new initiative aims to nurture the artistic talents of our youth, while showcasing their work with the greater Franklin community through public art. FPS Art Director Gooder notes, "Any time students of any age get a chance to show their work publicly, it motivates them to do their best. Art is meant to be seen; this initiative gives students an opportunity to see how people react and how their artistic voice can make a positive impact on others." 

The "Traveling School of Fish" installation is available to the public at the Franklin Sculpture Park on Panther Way in Franklin, MA next to the Franklin Police Station.

School Budget Subcommittee hears of the five areas for budget cuts, avoids bus fee increase for now - 05/02/23 (audio)

FM #986 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 986 in the series. 

This session shares the Franklin, MA School Committee Budget Subcommittee meeting held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. The meeting was conducted in the 3rd floor training room. Remote participation was enabled for this session. 

Chair Dave McNeill opened the meeting. School Committee members Dave Callaghan and Denise Spencer were present. Superintendent Lucas Giguere and Business Manager Miriam Goodman also participated.

Quick recap

• Business Manager Miriam Goodman provided the recap of Superintendent budget recommendation that went before the School Committee, they increased it, the Town Administration released the budget allocation as only $1M over prior budget so they are preparing to reduce by $2.3M accordingly

• Proposal before the subcommittee was in five categories:

• Reducing investment initiatives

• Reducing services

• Reducing positions

• Shifting some expenses to grant funding

• Increasing some revenues

• Discussion ensued by turn, around the subcommittee members, to clarify points on each of the five categories, and specifics within each

• All of this is preliminary as the Finance Committee hearings (Schools on May 10) may result in changes, and or the Town Council hearings (May 24 & 25) will lead to the final number needed to adjust

• Notifications of personnel reductions would need to be made before June 15, more likely to make them before that (i.e. mid to late May)

• One adjustment finally made was to increase the use of circuit breaker funds by $20K to avoid raising the bus fees, as the bus registration process commenced this week

• Next meeting set for June 6 at 5:30 PM to review and prepare for full committee meeting on June 13 at which point the final budget needs to be approved

Personnel Update Welcome to the Team We are pleased to introduce our new director of Human Resources Ken Storlazzi. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Emmanuel College. Ken has over 27 years of working experience within a school district, of which 21 years have had a human resources focus. We are excited to welcome Ken to our central office team! Pictured is Ken alongside our former HR Director Lisa Trainor who served the Franklin Public School District for over 25 years! Redistricting Analysis Update On June 14, 2022, the School Committee approved moving forward to conduct a redistricting analysis based on the recommendation of the Space Needs subcommittee. This analysis included securing a consulting firm, establishing an advisory committee, reviewing multiple scenarios, and receiving feedback from families and educators. After considering all the feedback, the Space Needs subcommittee narrowed the options to one recommendation. This recommendation and the sequence of events that led to the recommendation have been compiled in a comprehensive Redistricting Analysis document that will be presented to the School Committee at the April 25th meeting. The School Committee will then make a decision on how to move forward at the May 9th meeting.  You may access the Redistricting Analysis Recommendation Report presented to the School Committee here.
