“Ultimately, I think it’s sort of a tough sell”

"A grassroots campaign organizing in communities southwest of Boston hopes to draw attention to what its founder calls a “third-rail” issue: the level of influence House Speaker Robert DeLeo holds over his chamber. 
The group, called Massachusetts Voters for Legislative Reform and launched by Franklin resident Maxwell Morrongiello, plans to hold an organizing meeting at the Milford Library on Oct. 7. 
A release announcing the meeting said DeLeo has a “simply undemocratic” level of power, with House leadership in “almost absolute control” over “which bills pass and which bills die.” 
“I think the most challenging question you can ask a state representative is, Do you think the speaker of the House has too much power,” Morrongiello said in an interview. “They can never really give you a straight answer. I get the sense they sort of think he does.”

Franklin Historical Museum: Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective - June 18

As part of the Summer-long Bridal Gown Exhibit at the Franklin Historical Museum, we welcome the first of two guest speakers on Sunday, June 18 at 1:15PM. Maureen Taylor, known as the Photo Detective for her work solving photo mysteries, has created a special presentation to complement the museum’s exhibit. 

Her exclusive Wedding Images presentation, which will include a PowerPoint, clips, accessories, as well as a few photos of dresses used in the Franklin bridal display. The presentation will review how to identify photos by revealing details such as date of clothing, accessories, poses, props and documents. Hints can also be found in flowers, handkerchiefs, corsages, ribbons, veils, gloves and top hats. Join us Sunday and Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective will explain it all.

The exhibit, which opened Thursday evening June 8th will run through the end of August. It includes 12 dresses from the Museum’s collection. Featured this year is the ever popular parachute dress from 1946; a blue trimmed Priscilla of Boston gown; the dress worn by Franklin’s own Stella Jeon, the oldest dress in the collection from 1893, and many more.

The presentation by Maureen Taylor will identify fashion trends and a bit of the changing history of bridal fashions. It promises to be interesting, informative and entertaining.

The Franklin Historical Museum, located at 80 West Central Street, is open Saturday mornings 10am-1pm, Sunday afternoons from 1pm-4pm and Thursday evenings from 5pm-8pm. Admission is always free and the building is wheel chair accessible.

Microsoft Director of Governement Security Policy and Strategy Angela McKay to Speak at Dean College Executive Lecture Series

Dean College is honored to host Angela McKay, Director of the Government Security Policy and Strategy Team within Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft for the Dean College Leadership Institute Executive Lecture Series on January 24, 2017. The Executive Series offers a unique and interactive opportunity for students, alumni and the local community to interact with today’s business leaders.

Guest speaker, Angela McKay leads Microsoft’s public policy work on cybersecurity, cloud security, and norms, and on public sector use of cloud. Her team includes professionals working on these topics across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. She focuses on driving strategic change, both within Microsoft and externally, to advance trust in the computing ecosystem.

Ms. McKay combines technical expertise and public policy acumen to develop policies that improve security and stability of cyberspace, and support development, growth, and innovation. She serves on the Board of Councilors for the East West Institute, a think tank focused on international conflict resolution, and as Microsoft’s Point of Contact for the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, which provides the President of the United States with recommendations to maintain reliable, secure, and resilient communications.

The speaking program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Guidrey Center at Dean College, 99 Main Street, Franklin, MA on January 24, 2017. The program is FREE and open to the public.

The S.A.F.E. (Support for Addicts and Families by Empowerment) Board is presenting Professor Robert Putnam, the author of Bowling Alone and Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, at our next coalition meeting on February 2, 2016 at the Mercer Auditorium at Horace Mann School, 224 Oak Street, Franklin, MA.

The coalition meeting begins at 7 p.m., and we expect Prof. Putnam to speak between 7:30 pm and 8:45 pm. He will begin with a presentation and then will sit down with Dr. Anne Bergen for a one on one dialogue. The program is not authorized for taping or re-broadcast, so this will be your only opportunity to hear this nationally acclaimed author in our area.

Reminder: Voice of Franklin Toastmasters Open House - May 19

The Voice of Franklin Toastmasters invite residents and the local community to its Open House taking place during its May 19, 2015 meeting, 7:30 PM, at the Benchmark Senior Living at Forge Hill, Four Forge Hill Road, Franklin, MA. 
“Voice of Franklin Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive environment where members have the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills,” says Fred Elliott, Club President for Toastmasters Voice of Franklin.

Members and guests will enjoy a regular Toastmasters meeting that will include prepared speeches, Table Topics™ (impromptu speeches) and evaluations. 
Club VP of Education, Brian Hilfrank, who has served in various club positions, will be the Table Topics master. “Table Topics are one of my favorite parts of the meeting,” says Hilfrank. “This is where guests and members are randomly selected to speak for one to two minutes. It helps you think and speak clearly on your feet.” 
The Open House is open to guests, new members, past members, current members, and anyone curious about how Toastmasters can benefit them.

In this capacity, Jerry serves on the executive committees of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Massachusetts Business Roundtable.

He is also a member of the Boston Financial Services Leadership Council. In 2011, then-Governor Deval Patrick appointed him to the Massachusetts Economic Development Planning Council.
