Harvest Moonshine Festival - Sep 18

It has been a long time since you heard from us at OCC Coffeehouse – since the start of the COBID pandemic in February or March 2020.  Times have been difficult, but we are still here.  The future has begun to look much brighter in many respects, and you will be hearing more in the near future.

In the meantime, here is your invitation to a wonderful festival in Wrentham that will be well worth going to this afternoon, Saturday, September 18, from 3:30 until 8 PM at White Barn Farm in Wrentham.

Tri-County RVTHS Carpentry Students Renovating Wrentham Common Gazebo

Students have been able to gain some real-world experience as they renovate the gazebo in the center of Wrentham. The junior and senior students and their instructor, Jeremy Barstow, have been working on replacing all of the trim and roofing and repairing structural framing. They hope to have the roof finished by the end of this year.  Barstow comments, “The roof is a traditional cedar shingle system which is a labor-intensive process. It is an excellent opportunity for the students to work with one of the classic roofing materials.” 

Chad Lovett, Director of Facilities for the Town of Wrentham, reached out to Tri-County for the renovation.  The students have been working on the renovation for a few months now. “This is a great project for our students with a lot of unique detailed work. It will certainly push our students to grow as carpenters while having a lot of fun. The students are learning skills they can apply after graduation and are proud to be part of a build project that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come,” says Jeremy Barstow, Carpentry Instructor.

TRACY GRAMMER is one of contemporary folk music's most beloved artists. Renowned for her springwater-clear alto, perfectly intoned violin, and guitar playing that is by turns percussive and delicate, Grammer is also a gifted storyteller whose incantations add a rare mixture of vulnerability, intimacy, and hard-won insight to her performances. As one fan puts it, "With Tracy, it's never just about the music; it's a soul journey."

And what a journey it has been. Grammer rose to acclaim as half of the "postmodern, mythic American folk" duo, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. From 1998-2001, the duo released three internationally celebrated, chart-topping albums featuring Carter's mytho-poetic Americana songcraft and in 2002, toured with Joan Baez, both as featured artists and Baez's bandmates. Called "the new voice of modern folk music," the duo was clearly in its ascendancy when in July, 2002, Carter suffered a fatal heart attack mid-tour. He was 49; Grammer, 34.

Grammer is currently on tour celebrating the release of LOW TIDE, her first album of original songs. "I've been a writer all my life, but it was never my intention to be a songwriter," she says. "However, the road has curves we can't see at the outset of the journey. At some point along the path, writing songs became the most effective medicine for the pains and unresolved questions of my life. LOW TIDE is an album of revelations, confessions, and ultimately, healing. I am proud of the writing and utterly thrilled with the sounds. I took risks. I tried new approaches. I told the truth, and delivered my multitudes. My eleventh album is the first one that really sounds like me." Co-produced with long-time touring partner Jim Henry, LOW TIDE was released January 19, 2018 on Grammer's own label, Tracy Grammer Music, and is available through Fish Records in the U.K.

It's hard to know where to start when describing Jim Henry. He does a lot of things and he does them well. As a sideman, on a variety of electric or acoustic guitars, or on mandolin or dobro, Jim can render emotional sensitivity in one moment then tear into a rock or country solo with such fire it's hard to catch your breath. He is a master of adding whatever is needed at any musical moment. At center stage, whether as a solo artist or leading a band, Jim delivers his finely crafted original songs with a smooth, rich baritone voice and engaging storytelling and humor.

Addition to The Brothers Four Concert at OCC Coffeehouse on Nov. 8

"We have a new development with The Brothers Four concert. A very popular local group, The McGuire Brothers, will be opening for them. The McGuire Brothers consist of Mike and Sean McGuire on acoustic guitars and drummer Dean Winslow, playing a mix of covers from the 1940s to the present. Many people in the Wrentham area have enjoyed the McGuires for years, and we expect you will too."

50 Great Years! Now proudly celebrating their Golden Anniversary! The smooth musical sounds of The Brothers Four have delighted millions for five exciting decades. Folk Songs and Love Songs from America, Europe, Africa and Asia round out a fabulous repertoire of acoustic tunes old and new.

They were pioneers in the musical movement which came to be know as the "folk revival", and of the few groups from those times still performing today, they remain one of the best known and most popular. Their all-acoustic presentation consists of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and of course the trademark rich blend of their four voices. An evening with this quartet is an unforgettable time of pure, acoustic music and entertainment.

The full-time lineup of The Brothers Four, as solid as ever, now includes Mike McCoy, a veteran folk performer and singer/songwriter, a native of Washington State who has performed with The Brothers Four on special recording projects and occasional stage presentations since the late 1960's; Washington native, Karl Olsen, folk performer, choral director, writer and arranger, the latest addition to the group, blending his sparkling vocal and guitar skills smoothly into the sound of The Brothers Four; Washington State's Mark Pearson, guitarist, banjo player extraordinaire and singer/songwriter who has been such a strong and consistent part of the Group's signature sound since he originally joined in the late 1960's; along with Founding Member, Seattle native, Bob Flick, bass player, group leader and singer/songwriter.

Since then, Garnet Rogers has been called ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful.

In the News: EEE 2nd case in MetroWest; Plans for divider on RT 1 in Wrentham

Health officials announced that the city is among several communities in the region at “critical” risk for a potentially fatal mosquito-borne virus, after a person aged 19 to 30 in Grafton tested positive.

Friday’s news marks the first time that an Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)-positive human case has been confirmed in the region and the second EEE-positive human case in the state, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Six days ago, an individual from Plymouth County was confirmed with the disease.

Besides Framingham, the DPH said risk ratings were raised to critical in Hopkinton, Grafton, Northbridge, Shrewsbury, Southborough, Upton, Westborough, Marlborough, Millbury, Northborough and Sutton.

A head-on crash on Rte. 1 earlier this month was the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back for Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath.

The chief took to his department’s Facebook page the morning after the Aug. 4 crash, vowing to do what he can to press for safety improvements along the dangerous stretch of road.

“Too many injured and dead over the years,” he wrote, noting that the crash - caused when a left-turning car was struck - resulted in several people getting injured, including a 6-year-old Wrentham girl who suffered a head injury.

Bill and Kate are an acoustic singer/songwriter duo based in Duluth, Minnesota. Using a wide variety of musical styles, their performances carry audiences through a broad landscape of experiences from metaphorical worlds to small town family stories and to zany comedy. Consummate performers, they are known for their catchy melodies and memorable songs. They have a deep-seated love for the audience, and each other, and it shines before, during, and after the performance.

They tour nationally, presenting their profound songs for audiences large and small, from house concerts to festival stages and everything in between. Words like 'Mesmerizing, 'Transcendent', and even, 'Hysterical' are common descriptions from audience reviews and audiences members feel that they are listening to stories of their own lives, told by two of their best friends.

Bill Isles (Born and raised in Duluth, MN) performed his first show of original songs, after a twenty-five year hiatus, in February of 2000. Since that time, he has become one of the most well known singer/songwriters in the Minnesota acoustic scene and has been getting national and international attention. 

Bill's love of life has strong roots in his childhood, but his urgency to tell these stories comes from an experience in 1993 when, with just enough warning to drive himself to the hospital, he experienced a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. He arrived with just ten minutes to spare. After being defibrillated, and before the doctors had time to detect and open a blocked artery in his heart, he made a commitment to himself that, if he survived, he would begin to write again. Those paddles restarted more than just his heart.

Kate Isles (Born in Tecumseh, NE, raised in Rochester, MN) came to the CD release concert for Bill's first CD, "Weightless" after hearing a public radio interview. She bought the CD and signed up on his e-mail list. ('Grounds for marriage!' quips Bill). Their song, 'Public Radio (A True Story)' is a delightful duet that chronicles these beginnings.

Tom is a gifted musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration and journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues.

Rush's impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the '60s and the renaissance of the '80s and '90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, "Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences." Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences.

Matt Nakoa,Tom's keyboard player and vocalist, now tours internationally, recently performing at The White House, throughout India, and regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush. Matt's piano music has received favorable reviews in publications including The New York Times, and his film scoring has been featured by Disney.

Fellswater is Boston's dynamic Celtic music ensemble. They are back by popular demand after selling out last year, so get your tickets early. They play a wide range of music from traditional to modern compositions that draws from the heritage of all the Celtic nations, especially Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Canada. Their instrumentation changes depending on the musical selection and includes vocals, whistle, Irish flute, guitar, octave mandolin, violin, Scottish smallpipes, border pipes, acoustic bass guitar and percussion. Formed in late 2008, Fellswater has performed for audiences ranging from 20 to 8,000. The ensemble has delighted audiences at New Hampshire Highland Games, Maine Highland Games, Blackstone River Theatre, Boston Celtic Music Fest, Colonial Williamsburg, notloB concert series, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, and at the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo last August.

Fellswater consists of Kyle Forsthoff, a diverse percussion performer, Betsy Ketudat playing violin and fife, Jim MacConduibh playing acoustic bass guitar, Irish bouzouki and guitar, Sarah MacConduibh playing whistle, Irish flute and fife, Andrew McIntosh on Scottish smallpipes and border pipes, Chris Myers playing guitars and octave mandolin, and as one of the vocalists, and Diane Myers as the second vocalist. All the band members are from the Massachusetts and Rhode Island area.
