Live reporting: Discussion Action Items - Improvement Plans, Davis Thayer study

3. Discussion / Action Items
a. Middle/High School Improvement Goals 2019-20
I recommend approval of the 2019-20 improvement goals for Horace Mann Middle School, Annie Sullivan Middle School, Remington Middle School and Franklin High School as discussed.

motion to approve, seconded, passe 7-0

b. Authorization for Further Analysis

policy describes process to examine school buildings
engage in a closing study for Davis Thayer
would occur over time to examine all the components

1 - age and design of building
security and safety concerns, features not found in modern buildings
heat in August was a challenge, A/C units brought in but electrical power was insufficient
not universally accessible as required, accommodations difficult to put in place

2 - overall enrollment projects down
this is a study so we would engage more deeply into the future aside from birth rates

3 - economic efficiency across the district

taking time to be thoughtful and deliberate
engaging with Davis Thayer community and the larger Franklin community
also to engage an outside consultant to provide

Scofield
this memo does not say it is closing, proposal is for further analysis
elevator at DT was on capital improvement list

Feeley
what is the consultant to do?
the consultant to provide some assitance with demographic population and movement around town; fresh eyes and an outside perspective
we have amazing people who work for the schools, this is a little beyond our scope of practice; we can balance the outside with our prospective and the needs/wants of the school community

what is the expected budget for outside consultant?
we need to do a scope of work and come back with some estimates
this is only the authorization for the study

meetings scheduled for Thursday, 10 AM here at Chambers, later at 6 PM at the DT library

this is more than just a building, it is a community
anyone who thinks this is an easy consideration, is not thinking

we are only voting to authorize the study

- include the town as it would include more than just DT

I recommend authorization for further analysis of the Davis Thayer Elementary School through a comprehensive closing study as discussed.

motion to approve, seconded, passed 7-0

FHS field hockey and volleyball teams post wins, boys soccer gains tie, all vs. KP

Via HockomockSports.com we share the results of the FHS fall sports action on Monday, Sep 9, 2019

Boys Soccer = Franklin, 1 @ King Philip, 1 – Final
– Click here for a photo gallery from this game – King Philip took the lead shortly before halftime but Franklin found the equalizer midway through the second half to earn a point on the road. Evan McEvoy set up Alex Leon for a left-footed shot that found the side netting at the far post to put KP up 1-0 in the 38th minute. Franklin’s Donny Tappin made a nice run down the left side, setting up Lucas Moura for the equalizer in the 61st minute.

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 2 – Final
- King Philip rallied from a two-game deficit to force a fifth set but Franklin came away with a 3-2 decision (29-27, 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 15-10). Junior Allyson Bonnet-Eymard led the way for the Panthers with 21 kills, seven aces, and 11 digs while Bridget Jackson had a strong showing with 13 kills and four blocks. Emma Chase added eight kills and Jill Benoit finished with 16 digs for Franklin. King Philip’s Catherine Waldeck had 11 kills and five blocks, and Nicole Coughlan chipped in with seven kills, two aces, and two blocks. Emma Brooks (six aces, eight digs) and Lily Carlow (three aces, seven digs) both had strong games defensively and serving for KP.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"Monday afternoon’s field hockey contest between host King Philip and visiting Franklin will be a learning experience for both sides.

An experienced Panthers squad, who earned a 3-0 win in the game, will look to fine tune their offense, mainly their shot selection. And the Warriors, with a roster filled with mostly new faces to the varsity level, will be looking to get to the same level as the visitors.

Franklin controlled the play for the majority of the game, peppering the King Philip net from start to finish. However, thanks to a terrific performance from KP junior goalie Makenzie Manning (22 saves), the Panthers only celebrated three goals.

But three goals was all the Panthers needed, as they held the hosts to just one shot on goal with one penalty corner. Meanwhile, Franklin racked up 14 penalty corners and placed 27 shots on goal throughout the contest."

Wine and Cheese - Sep 14
Wine and Cheese - Sep 14
Since its inception, La Cantina Winery has become the premier location for learning the process of winemaking.  From grapes, to barrel, to bottle, they are committed to the educational and fun process of making wine. Smith’s Cheeses combines old fashioned family traditions and hard work  to produce their Farmstead Cheeses. They also have a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint: their grid-tied photovoltaic solar system offsets over 70% of their hot water and 30% of their electrical usage costs by using the energy of the sun.

Singing the cheesiest songs ever written will be performers from the Franklin Performing Arts Company. Audiences will enjoy being led through these “classic” songs by host Nick Paone.

THE BLACK BOX is located at 15 W. Central St. in downtown Franklin, MA. For tickets and more information visit www.THEBLACKBOXonline.com or call the box office at 508-528-3370. Follow THE BLACK BOX on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for more updates.
