FHS boys basketball tops Foxboro on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Foxboro, 51 @ Franklin, 77 – Final

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap ->
"The Franklin boys basketball team had their foot on the gas throughout the first half. The Panthers slammed the pedal down in the second half.
Junior Sean O’Leary poured in 16 of his career-high 26 points in the third quarter and the Panthers turned a single-digit halftime lead into a runaway win over visiting Foxboro, 77-51.

The Panthers transitioned a strong defensive effort into some easy buckets, getting out and running and attacking the basket early in the shot clock to balloon the nine-point halftime lead up to 21 points going into the fourth quarter.

“I thought the pace of the game was much improved for us in the second half,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely, now in his ninth year at the helm of the Panthers. “We played into the halfcourt with them a little too much in the first half but we’re better when we’re playing with pace and sharing the basketball. I thought we amped it up and it started with our defense. We made a couple of adjustments, we had to switch how we were guarding the ball screens and the blur cuts, and once we made that switch, we stopped [Ryan LeClair] from going downhill and that took away some of their shooting. Once we got stops, we were able to get out and run.”

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 50 @ Foxboro, 55 – Final
– Camryn Collins scored 20 points for the second straight game and Foxboro rallied from 11 points down in the second half to end Franklin’s 44-game league win streak. The first quarter was tight, as both teams came out firing. Collins had 10 of Foxboro’s 16 and Katie Peterson had 11 of Franklin’s 15. The Panthers locked down in the second, holding Foxboro to just two points to go into the locker room leading 27-18. Foxboro rallied early in the third, cutting the lead to just two, but then Franklin put together a run to extend the lead out to as many as 11. Sasha Tracey knocked down a pair of threes for the Panthers and had all six of her points in the quarter. Down nine heading to the final eight minutes, the Warriors found another gear on both ends of the floor and pulled out a 25-11 fourth quarter to secure the victory. Kailey Sullivan caught fire and scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth, while Ava Hill added three of her seven and Collins scored seven points in the frame, including a clutch pull-up jumper to put Foxboro in front. Peterson would finish with 19 for the Panthers, 15 of them in the first half, and Lizzie Newman scored seven points.

Happy Holidays!

A Message from Lucas Giguere

We wish our Franklin Public Schools families, faculty, and greater Franklin community a happy and healthy holiday for those who observe. For many, this time of year allows us to pause and honor our connection to our community, of which we are part of many.

Over the past month, several students across the district have embraced the spirit of giving, kindness and connectivity; hosting toy and food drives to help impact families in and around town. Moments like this nurture our students as change makers and active community contributors!

We look forward to ringing in the new year with you all as we return from Winter break on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023.

Channeling Creativity: Winter Art Show and Concerts!

December was a busy month for our students enrolled in art or music programs. We held our annual district-wide Winter Art Show on December 6th that highlighted various forms of visual art our students have been working on throughout the year. Thank you to all who attended!

In addition to our Winter Art Show, we held concerts for our musically talented students at Franklin High School, Horace Mann Middle, Annie Sullivan Middle, and Remington Middle. Nurturing the arts within our youth is important! We could not do it without the support of our Art, Music, Choir and Orchestra faculty and staff as well as family and community support for creative expression!

Redistricting Analysis Update

The School Committee and District has been meeting with the Redistricting Advisory Committee and Redistricting Analysis consultant (AppGeo) to craft scenarios to propose to the community in Spring 2023 prior to final recommendations to the School Committee.

Any recommendations that may be approved by the School Committee will not go into effect during the 2022-2023 school year. The School Committee will continue to engage the public prior to reaching a final decision on any boundary adjustments, which will be addressed in the implementation plan for redistricting.

To better outline the redistricting analysis process, we have created a webpage to update the community on our efforts. Learn more via our Redistricting Analysis page.

CommonWealth Magazine: One vendor walks away while Christmas comes early for others

On the day when the Commonwealth Wind project got pulled, the State was giving awards for wind power development

"AVANGRID PULLED ITS Commonwealth Wind project out of the latest Massachusetts offshore wind procurement on Friday, and now many are wondering what the lone remaining participant, Mayflower Wind, will do.

When Avangrid on October 20 asked the Department of Public Utilities for a one-month delay to negotiate adjustments to its power purchase agreement in the face of soaring inflation, rising interest rates, and supply chain challenges, Mayflower seconded that call.

After the DPU told the two wind farm developers to either stand by their original contracts or back out of the procurement, Mayflower stood by its original contract while Avangrid eventually decided to drop out."

"CHRISTMAS CAME early for the fledgling offshore wind industry in Massachusetts, as the Baker administration handed out $180 million on Tuesday for infrastructure improvements and businesses in New Bedford, Somerset, and Salem.

The money flowed, even though the wind farms the state is counting on to spur the industry are having difficulty financing their projects. The awards were announced at the state wind turbine testing facility in Charlestown.

The largest amount of money, $75 million, went to Crowley Maritime, which has purchased 42 acres on the Salem waterfront and is preparing to redevelop the property to support offshore wind development.

Another $45 million went for improvements to the state-owned New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, which has been open for years but will get its first offshore wind customer, Vineyard Wind, starting in January."
