From passive houses to planning and zoning, Ted helps me Make Sense of Climate in this session (audio)

FM #940 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 940 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Ted McIntyre, Franklin resident and climate activist via the Zoom conference bridge Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

In this episode we covered the following topics:

  • Cold, weather incidents

  • Bill McKIbben reference of book “End of Nature”

  • Passive House (or Haus) technology

  • Wu revamps Boston planning

    • Ties to Franklin efforts on “Franklin For All” project and inclusionary zoning

    • Master Plan, determining the action plan for Franklin’s future

This discussion continues our journey understanding the MA roadmap toward net zero and while it helps me “make sense of climate”, we hope it helps with your understanding as well.

If you have climate questions or Franklin specific climate questions, send them in and we’ll try to answer them in a future session.

The conversation runs about 36 minutes. Let’s listen to my conversation with Ted McIntyre as he helps me ‘make sense of climate’

Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams top North Attleboro on Friday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, February 10, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = North Attleboro, 49 @ Franklin, 67 – Final
– Franklin sank four of its 11 three-pointers in the opening eight minutes to stake an early lead and the Panthers never looked back in a big win over visiting North Attleboro. Andrew O’Neill hit a pair, Justin Allen had one of his four triples, and Nick Scala tossed another in to take a 16-7 lead after one, and the Panthers never surrendered that lead. Bradley Herndon got going in the second with six of his 11 points and junior Sean O’Leary had a third of his 12 points in the second as Franklin took a 31-15 lead into the locker room. Allen had a team-high 14 points, O’Neill and O’Leary finished at 12 points apiece, and Herndon had 11 points. North senior Jack Munley and sophomore Jonnie Obuchowski each had nine points.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 66 @ North Attleboro, 48 – Final
– Katie Peterson scored a career-high 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists to lead Franklin to the road win that keeps the Panthers atop the Kelley-Rex by a game heading into Tuesday’s showdown with second-place Attleboro. Peterson got the visitors off to a strong start, burying a pair of threes and scoring 10 points in the first. Bridget Leo and Chloe Fales also knocked down threes for Franklin, which took a 24-8 lead after one. Peterson hit her third three and had four points in the second to help the Panthers extend the lead by two, 35-17, going into the locker room. After scoring only 17 points total in the first meeting, North found another gear offensively in the third. Despite Peterson scoring another eight points, North cut the lead by a couple, scoring 18 in the quarter. Maryellen Charette had five points and Ava McKeon, Sam Faria, and Ella McLaughlin each drilled threes for the Rocketeers. Peterson added six more in the fourth, including a drive midway through the quarter to set her new high mark. Sam Sweeney matched Peterson with five in the final eight minutes. Caelyn Leonard scored 11 (going 6-of-7 from the line), Bridget Leo added nine points and four assists, and Chloe Fales had six (all in the first). Sweeney and Charette each scored 10 and McLaughlin had nine, while McKeon and Katie Corsetti both finished with eight points for North.

Finance Committee hears from the Town permitting departments and reviews the stormwater credit manual (audio)

FM #939 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 939 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the Finance Committee meeting held on Wednesday, Feb 8, 2023.

Five members of the Finance Committee participated (4 absent); present in the Council Chambers were M Hamilton, N Corbosiero, Chair G Conley, N Riley, T Hansen.

The Finance Committee continued their 'deep dive' series to hear about the permit organizations within the Town of Franklin and their first view of the stormwater credit manual currently in draft.

These departments account for the "local receipts" portion of the Town revenue stream. The departments in order of presentation were Building & Inspections, Community Planning and Development (including Conservation) and Health.

Interesting to note that while MA general law does not require us to have a police or fire department, it does mandate these other departments.

The meeting recording runs 1 hour and 56 minutes, so let’s listen to the Finance Committee meeting Feb 8, 2023. Audio file -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-939-franklin-ma-finance-cmte-mtg-02-08-23

Cancellation of February 15th Memory Cafe

Hello All,

I regret to inform you that we are cancelling our "Where's The Toast" Memory Café scheduled for Feb. 15th at 1pm.  Unfortunately the Franklin Senior Center experienced a leak in the sprinkler system during the terrible cold snap resulting in some water damage.  Our Senior Center will remain closed next week as they continue to assess and repair the damage.

We look forward to seeing you all March 15th at 1pm as Steve McGovern entertains us all with songs we love to sing and dance along to.

Thank you for your understanding,

Ariel
