Franklin High School Music Achievements - Central Districts recognizes 26 students

26 Franklin High School Music Students were accepted to the Massachusetts Central District Honor Band, Chorus, and Orchestra

Twenty-six members of the Franklin High School music program virtually auditioned and were accepted into the 2021 Massachusetts Central District Honor Ensembles. Twelve of these Franklin High School students received All-State audition recommendations.

Due to the pandemic, the festivals will look a bit different this year. Rather than performing in a large ensemble, those students who received All-State recommendations are invited to perform in a virtual masterclass.  This means that they will perform a solo in front of a virtual audience and receive feedback from a highly respected music educator.  All other Sr. District students will have the opportunity to observe these masterclasses.

Accepted into the Central District Band will be Karah Brandanese - Clarinet, Thomas Bradley - Trombone, Simon Brooks - Tuba, Nipun Goel - Trumpet, Derek Halet - Trumpet, Carley Johnson-Pellegri - Bassoon, Joel Keller - Tuba, Ryan O'Rourke - Euphonium, William Olbrys - Trombone, Prem Pendkar - Alto Saxophone, Lola Richardson - Flute, Anton Sackley - Percussion, Zachary Simms - French Horn.

Franklin High School students performing with the Central District Jazz Band will be Colin Manocchio - Trombone and Ian Richardson-Bass.

3 National Merit Scholars named at Franklin High School

"Congratulations to Franklin Panthers Sidhartha Chaganti, Alexandra Krylova, and Gerard Collins for earning the National Merit Scholars certificate.
The National Merit Scholarship program is an academic competition managed by The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, established in 1955. Approximately 16,000 high school students, less than 1%, compete as National Merit semi-finalists, but only 7,500 students are acclaimed as National Merit Scholars.
To be eligible, a student must take PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), along with other requirements such as completing all four years of high school. The Scholarship program views scores based on states, so each student has an equivalent chance at winning. The National Merit cutoff scores most likely change every year."

2 FHS music students to perform with All Eastern Honors Ensembles

The 2019 All-Eastern Honors Ensembles to Perform at The David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA April 4-7, 2019, Pittsburgh PA

More than 780 of the most musically talented high school students in the Eastern region of the United States have been selected to perform in the 2019 All-Eastern Honors Ensembles.

Selected to perform in the All-Eastern Honors from Orchestra and Band are the following students from Franklin High School in Franklin, MA.
  • Lauren Dennett - Tenor Saxophone
  • Brinda Venkataraman - Violin

With assistance from their music teachers, Mrs. Diane Plouffe and Mrs.Leighanne Rudsit, these exceptional students will prepare remarkably challenging music that they will perform under the leadership of prominent conductors in this biennial event. Students will spend three days rehearsing with one of five conductors during the Eastern Division Conference of The National Association for Music Education to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in preparation for performances on April 7, 2019.

The All-Eastern Honors Ensembles, consisting of concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, treble chorus, and jazz ensemble, are organized by members of The National Association for Music Education. The concert band and symphony orchestra will each have approximately one hundred fifty instrumentalists, the jazz ensemble will have eighteen instrumentalists, the treble chorus will have one hundred twenty vocalists, and the mixed chorus will have approximately three hundred twenty vocalists. Student participation from each state is determined by a percentage of the total Eastern Division membership.

Each of the state music educators associations in the Eastern Division (CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, PA, VT, Europe) oversee the selection process in their state during the fall of the year before the event and compile ranked lists of recommended juniors and seniors for consideration. The method used to compile the lists varies from state to state, although all recommended students must have been selected to participate in their home all-state festivals.

The committee builds the ensembles from the state presidents' ranked lists, trying to mimic the state population percentages in each group.

The 2019 All-Eastern Honors Ensembles (all except for Jazz, which will perform on Saturday evening, April 6) will perform for an audience of thousands on Sunday, April 7, 2019, in the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA. For program and ticket information please visit www.pmea.org.

Massachusetts Music Educators Association will be holding the 2019 All-State Music Festival. Three students from the Franklin High School band program were selected for an ensemble and will perform at Symphony Hall in Boston.

The annual All-State Conference features as many as 120 teacher workshops, several concert hours and casual concerts, and is attended by more than 800 music educators and 500 of Massachusetts' top student musicians performing band, orchestral, jazz or choral repertoire.

The Franklin High School students that were selected for the All-State Ensembles Program are: Augustine Marzoratti - Clarinet, Emma Kucich- Flute and Robert Castro - Jazz Drums.

“The all-state experience is a chance for some of our advanced players to surround themselves with the best student musicians in the state,” said Diane Plouffe, Director of Music. “The audition process alone exposes students to other local musicians outside of the Franklin Public Schools who are striving for musical excellence and achievement in their community and school. We are proud of all of our students.”

Franklin High School Placed on the College Board's 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Access and Success

Franklin High School is one of 433 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. To be included on the 7th Annual Honor Roll, Franklin High School increased the number of students participating in AP courses while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

"This recognition is evidence of the collective effort our PreK-12 administration and teachers to establish high academic expectations for all students. This is not only a HS honor but it recognizes the efforts of all PreK-12 educators and their commitment to expanding options and opportunities for all students. This distinction reaffirms our core values that a rigorous yet inclusive educational program raises achievement for all students", noted Dr. Sabolinski, Superintendent of Schools.

National data from 2016 show that among black/African American, Hispanic, and Native American students with a high degree of readiness for AP, only about half are participating. The first step to getting more of these students to participate is to give them access. Courses must be made available, gatekeeping must stop, and doors must be equitably opened. Franklin Public Schools is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds.

"Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams," said Trevor Packer, the College Board's head of AP and Instruction. "These teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge."

Helping more students learn at a higher level and earn higher AP scores is an objective of all members of the AP community, from AP teachers to district and school administrators to college professors. Many districts are experimenting with initiatives and strategies to see how they can expand access and improve student performance at the same time.

In 2016, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admission process.

Inclusion on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2014 to 2016, looking across 37 AP Exams, including world language and culture. The following criteria were used.

Districts must:

  • Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6 % in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts;
  • Increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students; and
  • Improve or maintain performance levels when comparing the 2016 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2014 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70% of its AP students earn a 3 or higher.

When these outcomes have been achieved among an AP student population in which 30% or more are underrepresented minority students (black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native) and/or 30% or more are low-income students (students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch), a symbol has been affixed to the district name to highlight this work.

In the News: bag bylaw sent to subcommittee; Dao to perform at All-National Honor Ensembles

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The Town Council has opted to send a proposed plastic bag ban to its economic development subcommittee after some local residents and businesses raised objections to the measure.
The ban - which would affect single-use plastic shopping bags - had been before the council for a first reading at its meeting last week. A group of Franklin High School students had proposed the bylaw last month, citing the impact the bags have on the environment.
Councilor Andrew Bissanti, who leads the economic development group, said a number of people had contacted the town after the law was proposed.
"In between meetings, there was a firestorm of controversy - a lot of merchants complained," he said. "Big Y (supermarket) said they were not notified... there was significant opposition."
