FSPA Re-Opens Broadway

Alumni and Broadway Faculty from the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) have been on stage in the reopening casts of many Broadway shows. This September marked the return of the Great White Way since the shutdown in March 2020. FSPA is currently represented in the Broadway companies of WICKED and Waitress and the North American Tour of Hamilton.

FSPA musical theater alum Dan Gleason returned to the Broadway cast of WICKED when it re-opened on Tuesday, September 14. Gleason appears in the ensemble and understudies the lead role of Fiyero. His other credits include the national tours of American Idiot and Miss Saigon. Of his years growing up at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts Gleason says, "I owe a lot of my consistent vocal health and technique throughout the rigorous run to my years at FSPA.  Healthy singing habits were ingrained in my body and now have become second nature. FSPA set me up for success in life and I am so thankful for my years of training in my hometown."

Joining Dan in the reopening cast of WICKED, is FSPA Broadway Faculty Member Kevin Massey. Massey’s Broadway credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Memphis, Tarzan, and Big River (Deaf West). He is a UNC-Chapel Hill Morehead-Cain Scholar. As a member of the FSPA Broadway Faculty, Massey is available to the musical theater students for one-on-one vocal and acting coaching. “I have an amazing time working with FSPA,” notes Massey. “The students are so talented and responsive to coaching. It is so exciting to see immediate improvement and their confidence build. No matter the level, there is always so much to work with.”

Christopher Rice-Thomson, a member of FSPA’s Broadway Faculty for singing, acting, dancing, and marketing for performers, is currently on the road with the hit musical Hamilton. Rice-Thomson’s Broadway credits include Pretty Woman and The Book of Mormon and the tours of West Side Story (Baby John, Tony understudy) and White Christmas. His viral #Tappy YouTube videos have received over 10 million views and been featured on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, The Meredith Vieira Show, On Air with a Ryan Seacrest, and more. Rice-Thomson has appeared with Franklin Performing Arts Company as Jack Kelly in Newsies and in his own creation: Christopher Rice’s The Tappy Christmas Special: LIVE!

FSPA Broadway Faculty Member for Voice and Acting Emily Koch returns to Waitress on Broadway understudying the show’s star and composer Sara Bareilles. Koch’s credits include WICKED (Elphaba) and Godspell with the Berkshire Theatre Group.  In Franklin, Koch has headlined FPAC’s Broadway In Franklin Weekend, THE BLACK BOX Sings… WICKED, and appeared as a guest with viral A Cappella sensation T.3 at THE BLACK BOX.

FSPA Ballet Conservatory Alums Join Professional Ballet Companies

The Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) Ballet Conservatory celebrates its former students who are currently dancing in professional companies all around the world. FSPA's Ballet conservatory Program offers classical ballet education of the highest quality. Under the direction of former American Ballet Theatre (ABT) dancer Cheryl Madeux, an extensive range of training and performance experiences provides exceptional opportunities for students of all ages and levels interested in the study of classical ballet. The FSPA Ballet curriculum is based on the foundations of the ABT National Training Curriculum. All teachers on the FSPA Conservatory Track have been certified in the NTC program.

Former FSPA Ballet Conservatory student Melissa Chapski is currently dancing with the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich after joining the company in April. After training at FSPA until 2012, she graduated from the Ellison Ballet Professional Training Program in New York City. That same year, she was awarded a gold medal at Indianapolis International Ballet Competition and Youth American Grand Prix's Boston regional, and a contract to the Dutch National Ballet's junior company at YAGP Finals where she placed top 12. Chapski danced two seasons in Dutch National's junior company followed by three seasons in the corps de ballet. She has appeared as a guest artist in galas in London, Spain, Mexico, Switzerland, China, America, and The Netherlands. Chapski was also featured as 'Emma' in the movie High Strung: Free Dance and has done ad campaigns for Huawei Mobile, Nikon Europe, Discount Dance Supply, Capezio, and Russian Pointe.

Noura Sander was recently promoted to Studio Company with The Washington Ballet and Jared Brouillette joined Kansas City Ballet II. Both studied in FSPA’s Ballet Conservatory with Cheryl Madeux and faculty and were featured in the Franklin Performing Arts Company’s Nutcracker.  Colleen Megley, an FSPA Ballet Conservatory graduate, has been serving as Manager of School Programs at New York City Ballet since 2018. Megley received her Master’s degree in Dance Education and Ballet Pedagogy from NYU Steinhardt and was on the ballet faculty at the Peridance Capezio Center in NYC for eight years.

In previous years, FSPA has presented its students for Examinations in the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum at ABT’s studios in New York, NY. The Examination class was taught by Ms. Madeux. FSPA is proud to incorporate the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum, a nine-level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development for students of all ages and skill levels. Upon successful exam completion, Cheryl Madeux earned the distinction of ABT Affiliate Teacher.

FSPA also offers two additional tracks of Ballet study for students not on the pre-professional path and advanced dancers with limited time in their schedules.

FSPA Offers Pre-Professional Ballet Program

The Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) continues its successful Ballet Conservatory program under the direction of Cheryl Madeux. With pre-professional training, FSPA's Ballet Conservatory offers classical ballet education of the highest quality. An extensive range of training and performance experiences provides exceptional opportunities for students of all ages and levels interested in the study of classical ballet.

The FSPA Ballet curriculum is based on the foundations of the ABT National Training Curriculum. As of 2015, all teachers on FSPA’s Conservatory Track have been certified in the NTC program. Additionally, FSPA Academy, partnered with the virtual Massachusetts Public School TECCA, combines the flexibility of a virtual education with the practicality of a schoolroom, and can accommodate professional opportunities, rehearsal, and performance schedules for pre-professional students who wish to study at FSPA full-time.

The first levels of the ballet program begin an earnest study of classical ballet. Barre work is introduced with a strong focus on individual turnout, foot development, and port de bras. As dancers progress into the intermediate levels, the faculty carefully evaluates each student's progress and potential for pointe work while continuing to nurture the desire to dance. The Pre-Professional Program begins advanced ballet technique and pointe.

Admission is by teacher evaluation and audition only. This program consists of FSPA’s most challenging and demanding schedule and provides additional performance opportunities for dancers, along with private coaching and extra classes if desired.

FSPA’s Ballet program is under the direction of Cheryl Madeux, a former dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Joffery Ballet, and Hartford Ballet. She received her training at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts. Ms. Madeux has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, worked with leading choreographers including Gerald Arpino, Kirk Peterson, and Twyla Tharp, and been coached by such ballet luminaries as Igor Youskevitch and Eleanor D’Antuono.

Her extensive classical repertoire includes all the full-length classical productions as well as principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle, Coppelia, The Firebird, Balanchine’s Serenade, Spectra de La Rose, and much more. Many of Ms. Madeux’s FSPA Ballet Conservatory students have been accepted to some of the most prestigious summer programs available and a select few recently participated and advanced to the finals of the Youth America Grand Prix in NY. Ms. Madeux is also a summer faculty member for the ABT Young Dancers Program in NY and an examiner for the ABT National Training Curriculum.

FSPA offers two additional tracks of Ballet study for students not on the pre-professional path and advanced dancers with limited time in their schedules. The Standard Track is designed to train and educate students in classical ballet so they may use this knowledge to enhance other disciplines and prepare to enter competitive college dance programs, if desired.

Pointe is not offered on this track, allowing for fewer requirements and greater flexibility of schedules. Students are evaluated for placement in the level to assure continued development and success. The Recreational Ballet Program consists of once-a-week classes to meet the needs of older students with no prior experience who wish to explore the discipline of classical ballet and dancers with some experience who want to continue study for enjoyment.

Franklin School for the Performing Arts Announces Fall Opening Plan

The Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will open for its 36th season on September 10th.  Returning students, as well as those students new to the school, will be welcomed for all programs in FSPA’s departments Music, Dance, and Drama.  All FSPA classes will be taught in-person or in a hybrid format, alternating weeks. Students may elect to take all classes virtually, if preferred.

FSPA’s COVID-19 Control Plan was developed in accordance with the Mass.gov/Reopening Massachusetts guidelines.  Updates to procedures and practices are made as new information becomes available.  The school reopened for in-person instruction on June 29th and summer classes and camps ran throughout the summer months.

FSPA Founder and Director Raye Lynn Mercer remarks, “This is an unprecedented year for one and all, and it has required creative thinking, flexibility, and tenacity to problem solve our way to FSPA’s Fall 2020 opening.  Our faculty and staff have worked diligently through this challenging time and after a summer of research and experience, we are enthusiastic and ready to start the school year.”

New students are welcome and trial classes are available.   Prospective students are invited to make an appointment to come in for a tour and to discuss program options. As an alternative, previously conducted virtual tours can be viewed on the FSPA Facebook page.

According to Mercer, “Fall 2020 is a time when many in-school activities, sports, and extracurricular opportunities are in flux.  This is a perfect time to try something new!  FSPA offers trial classes and a chance to see what our programs are about, without a commitment.  We look forward to meeting new families this fall, even while under unusual circumstances.”

Proudly serving more than 500 students annually from 45 communities in Massachusetts’ Metro West region, the Franklin School for the Performing Arts is committed to quality education in the arts with exceptional curriculum, outstanding professional faculty, and unwavering dedication to each and every student enrolled. Founded in 1985, FSPA is a unique place where students of all ages and levels of ability participate in an array of music, dance, and drama programs with professional instruction and extraordinary performing opportunities.

With broad-based and varied curricula, FSPA guides students in the development of technique, creativity, and artistic expression to last a lifetime. FSPA’s faculty boasts outstanding professional artists including a roster of Broadway performers and teachers who are experts in their genre and discipline.  The impressive faculty credentials are indicative of the excellent instruction available in all programs at FSPA. Instructors strive to meet the individual needs of each student, working to develop each student’s abilities to his or her own potential.

Performance is an integral part of an FSPA arts education and the school offers unrivaled performing opportunities for students throughout the year.  On the calendar annually are student recitals, concerts by faculty and guest artists, master classes, student showcases, holiday shows, the school’s signature Spring Concert, and summer camps and intensives.  In addition, for students whose level of interest is more focused, there are special performing ensemble opportunities available by audition.

FSPA Academy, located at 32 Main Street, provides an academic option for students in grades 6-12.  With the flexibility of a virtual education, the practicality and consistency of a schoolroom, and the oversight of learning coaches, FSPA Academy partners with TECCA, a virtual Massachusetts Public School, as well as the international private school Pearson Academy.

The curricula are taught by licensed, certified teachers through a combination of Live Lessons and individual assignments.  The flexibility of FSPA Academy can accommodate professional opportunities as well as rehearsal and performance schedules for aspiring artists, but serves so many students who value a cultural e This year it also provides a viable alternative for learning during this challenging time for the public schools for students who may not work effectively at home.

“FSPA Academy can accommodate professional opportunities as well as rehearsal and performance schedules for aspiring artists,” comments Mercer, “but it also provides a wonderful setting for students who value a structured, supportive and encouraging environment with a cultural emphasis.  Certainly right now, we have an option for those who might find the at-home virtual learning less than successful.”

THE BLACK BOX, home of the Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), a 200-seat flexible theater located behind FSPA, provides a professional venue for FSPA student productions, while FPAC offers opportunities by audition for student performers.

FSPA Announces Reopening Plan with Virtual Option

The Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will open at 38 Main Street on June 29 with a virtual option for Summer 2020. The school will employ safety measures for enhanced cleaning, hygiene, screening, and distancing as detailed in their Four Pillar Plan. Families who are not completely comfortable returning for classes in person may elect the virtual option for the Summer Session.

“Our staff has prepared the building and adapted programs to meet the most current guidelines for a summer reopening,” comments Director Raye Lynn Mercer. “Our camps and intensives will have stable student groupings and limited class sizes, with break time and some classes held outdoors.”

FSPA provides an exciting summer session of theater programs, ballet intensives and one-week creative camps, along with music and dance classes. The 2020 summer session runs from June 29 to August 21. The summer months are a wonderful time for families new to the school, as well as beginner students, to get involved at FSPA. Summer productions provide fun performance opportunities while weekly classes and intensives give all students the chance to focus on skill building, improving technique, or trying a brand new discipline. “This summer’s shows are specifically written and planned in a creative, socially distanced format,” says Mercer.

FSPA’s Summer Ballet Intensives feature training in classical ballet technique, pre-pointe and pointe, with contemporary and jazz master classes. The four-week Intermediate/Advanced Intensive runs June 29-July 23 and the three-week Young Dancer Intensive is slated July 6-23, both under the direction of Cheryl Madeux.

FSPA Summer Theater provides the opportunity for immersion in a Broadway Boot Camp, cabaret show, play, or musical theater production, with enrollment for one to five weeks. The Cabaret week focuses on repertoire choices, song interpretation, and solo presentation, and concludes with a cabaret style revue at THE BLACK BOX theater’s outdoor stage in downtown Franklin. The three-day Broadway Boot Camp brings Broadway headliners to FSPA for song and dance master classes and coaching on individual performance skills. A weeklong drama program presents a straight play, while a two-week musical theater program stages a customized book musical at THE BLACK BOX.

A variety of weeklong performing arts camps are offered throughout the summer in addition to weekly classes for all ages and levels. Children ages 3-5, are invited to learn about FSPA’s Little Music School program in individual sessions with LMS Director Kim Rezendes.

Mercer concludes, “We are very excited to reopen at 38 Main Street, but remain prepared to make changes and adjust our plans as required by the Mass.gov reopening Massachusetts guidelines.” For more information on Summer offerings as well as details on FSPA’s Four Pillar plan for reopening, visit www.FSPAonline.com or call 508-528-8668.
