2023-2024 Hockomock Boys Basketball Preview - Franklin High School

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the boys basketball outlook for the Hockomock League featuring Franklin High School on Monday, Dec 11, 2023.

FRANKLIN
2022-2023 Record: 19-2 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
2022-2023 Finish: Reached Div. 1 Round of 16
Coach: CJ Neely

Coming off a season in which the Panthers only lost one league game and two games total, expectations remain high for Franklin — and for good reason.

Reigning Hockomock League MVP Sean O’Leary highlights a strong cast of returners for veteran head coach CJ Neely. While there are a lot of familiar faces back in the fold, the Panthers will have to replace the production of a small senior class that featured three regulars in Franklin’s lineup from last year. O’Leary, who also earned HockomockSports.com Player of the Year honors, averaged 20.3 points and 8 rebounds per game a year ago. He will be complemented by returners Andrew O’Neill (6.5 ppg), Bradley Herndon, and Hansy Jacques.

The biggest boost for Franklin is the return of senior guard Henry Digiorgio. As a sophomore, Digrorgio averaged over 16 points per game and was named HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. After a year off, Digiorgio could provide a massive scoring boost that the Panthers need after losing almost 25 points per game from graduated seniors Geino Scaringello, Justin Allen, and Ben Harvey. Junior Caden Sullivan, who had an injury to start last season, could be poised for a breakout year. Once again, a balanced offense will make Franklin a very hard team to guard, while the Panthers will likely be among the top defensive teams in the Hock.

“The preseason has been very competitive at practice,” Neely said. “With a lot of returning players, we were able to hit the ground running during the tryout sessions. This is a tight group of guys led by a strong senior class and some experienced underclassmen looking to make their mark. We will have consistent battles each day as guys try to earn minutes throughout the year. I have been most impressed with how committed and focused the players have been each day. It will be fun to watch them grow and compete all year.”

FHS' O'Leary, Allen & Harvey selected for 2023 HockomockSports.Com Boys Basketball Awards

The selections for the 2023 HockomockSports.Com Boys Basketball Awards were announced. The Franklin High School representatives are listed here. Link to the full listing is found below.

Boys Basketball Player of the Year  & HOCKOMOCKSPORTS FIRST TEAM
Franklin junior Sean O’Leary has been named the HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the 2022-2023 season. O’Leary was the top all-around player in the league and led the Panthers to their first Kelley-Rex division title since 2016. He was also voted as the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches.

“Sean really did it all for the Franklin this season,” said HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan. “He is such a talented all-around player and his fingerprints were all over the Panthers’ success this season, which included winning the Kelley-Rex division title. He can score in a variety of ways, including shooting the three, but his old-school like post game really separated him from others in the league. He is the first junior to be selected for this award in the 11 years of its existence.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS THIRD TEAM = Justin Allen – Franklin – Guard
Justin Allen
Justin Allen
Franklin senior Justin Allen had a terrific season for the Panthers, helping the program win the Kelley-Rex division title — the program’s first since 2016. After getting some valuable experience during his junior year, Allen became a true leader both on and off the court as a senior and emerged as one of the most lethal shooters in the league, as seen by his eight three-pointers in a win over Weymouth. Allen was second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game on a very impressive 44.5% three-point shooting percentage. He added 5.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game. “Over his career, Justin may be the most improved player from freshman to senior year that I have ever coached,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “He is such a hard worker and amazing leader who made big shots all year and I am really proud of him.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM = Ben Harvey, Franklin
Ben Harvey
Ben Harvey
Franklin senior Ben Harvey was once again one of the top defenders in the Hockomock League during the 2022-2023 season. He’s the first All-Defensive team repeat selection since the 2018 season after earning a spot on this team as a junior. His commitment to the defensive end is contagious and helped make the Kelley-Rex division Panthers one of the top defensive teams once again this year. He averaged 6.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. “It is always great to go into a game and know that you can put Ben on the opposing team’s best player and they will have an off night,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “He competes at such a high level every time he takes the court.”

The UMass lacrosse commit led the team in scoring with 357 points, which was good for 15.5 per night. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists per night, while shooting 55% from two-point range. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Katie was a wonderful leader for our team and led us in nearly every statistical category. Her athleticism and compete level was the key to her success on the court. She will be dearly missed next season.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS THIRD TEAM & HOCKOMOCKSPORTS ALL UNDERCLASSMEN TEAM - Chloe Fales – Franklin – Guard
Chloe Fales
Chloe Fales
Franklin sophomore guard Chloe Fales had a breakout first season on varsity for the Panthers, helping them secure a fifth straight league title and a return to the Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen. Fales was able to stretch the floor with her shooting and came up with important baskets in some of Franklin’s biggest games. She finished with just under 10 points per game and grabbed more than five rebounds and had nearly two steals per night, making an impact on both ends of the floor. She was selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Chloe was a key to our success with her timely shooting and great defense. I am very excited to watch her develop her game over the next few seasons.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS ALL DEFENSIVE TEAM - Bridget Leo – Franklin
Bridget Leo
Bridget Leo
Leo, a senior guard, was the latest in a line of tough Franklin defenders. The point guard dished out 79 assists, with a plus-26 turnover margin, and helped lock down opposing guards with 42 steals and 47 deflections as the Panthers won the Kelley-Rex division for the fifth year running. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Bridget was a natural leader for us and her focus on defense set the tone for the team. She is a wonderful mix of being an unselfish player while also being fiercely competitive.”

FHS boys basketball end playoff run with loss to Brockton on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Milford Daily News, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Saturday, March 7, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Division 1 = #3 Franklin, 47 vs. #14 Brockton, 56 – Final
"Ben Harvey wanted one last shot.

Following Franklin’s 56-47 loss to Brockton in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 16 on Tuesday, the Franklin High basketball senior captain — still in full uniform nearly a half hour after the final whistle — took a basketball out onto the mostly-empty Panthers court and attempted a free throw.

“Everyone knows the golden rule (that) you can’t end on a miss and I missed that (3-pointer) with eight seconds left so (I) had to end on a make,” Harvey said. “Free throws (have) been my most improved part of my game all year. So had to end it on a free throw.”

FHS girls basketball end run in playoffs vs. Bishop Feehan on Monday

Girls Basketball = Division 1 = #2 Bishop Feehan, 69 vs. #15 Franklin, 61 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com  provides the game recap -
"On the road against the No. 2 seed, Franklin (18-5) went into Monday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game wanting to prove that it can compete with one of the state’s best. To accomplish that goal, the Panthers were going to need to play some of their best basketball of the season.

In front of a packed, raucous gym, they did just that.

Franklin stormed out of the gates, building a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Bishop Feehan rallied to cut the lead to just one by halftime and grabbed a lead heading to the fourth quarter, but the Shamrocks weren’t able to put the game away until the final minute, going 13-of-18 at the line in the fourth to pull out a 69-61 victory.

“I have nothing but pride,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. “I’m so happy with the way they played. I know the final score is what it is, but we went out and played our best basketball and that’s all you can ask them to do.”

FHS girls and boys basketball teams win to advance in playoffs on Thursday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, March 2, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

  • Boys Basketball = Division 1 = #3 Franklin, 62 vs. #30 Weymouth, 49 – Final
Ryan Lanigan,  the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"As Franklin prepared all week to go against Weymouth’s aggressive zone defense, the Panthers knew they’d have some looks from outside.
Senior Justin Allen certainly took advantage of that opportunity.

Allen was nearly flawless as poured in a career-high 25 points on 8-for-9 shooting from three-point land, leading the third-seeded Panthers to a hard-fought 61-49 win over #30 Weymouth in a Division 1 Round of 32 game.

“I just hit the open shots, my teammates found me and once I see a couple go in, that basket just gets bigger,” Allen said. “With them in a zone, it just opens things up for us and we have great creators like Ben Harvey and Bradley [Herndon], and everyone else too. They were finding me and I was just knocking down shots."

  • Girls Basketball = Division 1 = #15 Franklin, 62 vs. #18 Newton South, 50 – Final
Ryan Lanigan,  the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"Franklin battled against foul trouble throughout the first half and couldn’t quite shake the 18th-seeded Lions of Newton South.
But with its full complement of players back in the mix in the second half, the 15th-seeded Panthers proved to have too many weapons.

Franklin had four players score in double figures and had a big second half offensively to land a 62-50 win over the Lions, advancing to the Round of 16.

“I thought we got in bad foul trouble early in the game and didn’t rebound great,” said Franklin head coach John Leighton. “When we got Lizzy [Newman] back we were able to use our height advantage a little more and got them to spread out [defensively] and then we could score in multiple ways. Mainly I thought it was our defense that improved and that was the difference.”
