MIAA: Winter Tournament Seeding Process Updates

Winter Tournament Seeding Process

Winter Tournament Seeds Released February 25

WINTER TOURNAMENT SEEDING PROCESS
During the Fall 2022 season the MIAA launched an effort to streamline the production of the final power rankings, and create a smoother process of building and releasing the tournament brackets. These new guidelines once again will be used by sport tournament directors, seeding committees, and MIAA staff for the Winter 2023 postseason in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys Ice Hockey and Girls Ice Hockey.

CUTOFF DATE – Thursday, February 23: All regular-season games in Basketball and Hockey must be completed by the end of the night in order to be included in the power rankings, postseason records and qualification requirements.  Scores must be recorded into Arbiter before the end of the night.

WORKING DAY – Friday, February, 24: The season data from Arbiter will be collected by MIAA staff as of the 4 AM report.

By 9 AM, staff will produce and publish a report on MIAA.net with each team's record (broken down by division, listed alphabetically by school), and all schedules and score data as reported to Arbiter throughout the season. No power rankings data will be published at this time.

If there are any changes that need to be made from that point, they must be communicated BY EMAIL to either the MIAA sport-specific liaison or tournament liaison.
BOYS, GIRLS BASKETBALL - Peter Smith - psmith@miaa.net
BOYS, GIRLS HOCKEY - Richard Pearson - rpearson@miaa.net
TOURNAMENT LIAISON - Jim Clark - jclark@miaa.net

Information entered directly into Arbiter will not be valid after 4 AM on the Working Day.

Schools will have 24 hours to report any corrections, and tournament officials/MIAA staff will also have the same 24 hours to track down any missing scores, and make any corrections to the data. Any changes or corrections to existing score data must be verified IN WRITING by both schools.

BRACKET/SEEDING DAY – Saturday, February 25: At 9 AM, the data will be considered FINAL and no more changes will be made. The final data will be used to create the final power rankings, which will be published along with the brackets on the following scheduled release times:

BOYS, GIRLS HOCKEY: 10 AM   &  BOYS, GIRLS BASKETBALL:  1 PM

The initial bracket release will include only matchup information, and brackets subsequently will be updated by tournament directors and MIAA staff with dates, times and sites for individual matchups.

Soccer For Smiles Tournament - Registration open for February vacation week

After a tragic earthquake in Haiti in 2010, a young Franklin boy created the Hope for Haiti soccer tournament motivated to do something to help. A soccer tournament was developed over February's school vacation that provided an opportunity for soccer players to have a lot of fun in friendly competition. The event raised a significant amount of money that was donated to the relief fund for Haiti. The Soccer For Smiles tournament was born! A way for kids to help others in their own community!

To date, the tournaments have raised over $47,000! The tournaments have focused on local charities with the majority of monies raised going toward the Random Smile Project. The group has also supported Team Isabella and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Each year the tournament has grown in participation and donations. The team of students has grown and changed as older team members move on to college and new students join in the effort.

Please join in this year! Kids playing kids raising money for charities, no coaches, no adults (other than the supervising staff of Franklin Soccer School), just kids having some fun over February vacation for a good cause. Grab some friends and make a team or just register on your own and join a team!

Here is the expected schedule during February vacation (Feb 17 - Feb 21) (which may adjust slightly based on teams/players registered):
  • Boys, Grades 1 and 2 Tuesday 10-Noon
  • Girls, Grades 1 and 2 Tuesday 10-Noon

Franklin Odd Fellows held a fundraiser Cornhole Tournament

On February 23, 2019, the Franklin Odd Fellows held a fundraiser Cornhole Tournament at the Downtown Sports facility at 240 Cottage St. in Franklin. Ten teams came together for a fun time in a double elimination, blind draw style tournament that was organized to raise funds for the Massachusetts Arthritis Foundation and other local charities.

This was a first of a kind event for the Odd Fellows who wanted a team sport oriented fundraiser in one of the winter months to balance out a similar event that was held in June of 2018. Facility owners, Richard Frongillo and Kevin Sayward, were gracious hosts throughout the day and lodge members put on a free buffet lunch complete with lasagna, chili, meatballs and rolls, salads, pastas, chips, soft drinks and desserts.

The Grand Prize for the winning team received an all expenses, round trip experience to
Nantucket Island on Daffodil Weekend that included round trip tickets for two on the Grey Lady high speed boat out of Hyannis, and participation in the hugely popular Antique Car Parade. The winning team of “Two Kids and a Bean Bag” were Shane Jackson & Dan Labonte. The second place team of “J & R” was fielded by Ralph Delucia and Jerry Rinkel. Raffle prizes included Red Sox and Patriots shirts and a hand-made ball point pen that retails at $80.00. This high quality and very unique pen is made by the current Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows lodge, Rob Knospins of Millis, MA.

Downtown Sports is an athletic Facility available to teams, clubs, and the community at
large for the enjoyment and development of athletes. The sports complex includes a turf field and a multi- sport court with separate space for fitness and exercise classes, training and group activities.

FHS girls basketball lose in OT

@CoachMacCreery takes us along for the ride of the FHS girls basketball game via Twitter

Monday, February 15, 2016

In tournament action, the FHS girls basketball team won and the boys team lost

"As the regular season winds down, Franklin starts to look for challenges not only outside the Hockomock but also outside the South bracket. That means venturing to the 14th annual Westborough Invitational Tournament and a chance to play against potential opponents from Div. 1 Central.
On Sunday afternoon, Franklin faced Algonquin, which is on the edge of qualifying for the postseason in a first round game of the tournament, which the Panthers last won in 2011. Led by 14 points and 15 rebounds from senior forward Aubrie Kutil, Franklin pulled away from the Tomahawks to earn a 51-36 victory.
“Aubrie does so much more than rebounds and points,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. I”t’s her composure, it’s her toughness…it calms everyone else down. You never see her rattled. When we’re in the huddle pregame, she’s the one who has everyone focused.”

"First it was overcoming a 14-0 hole to start the game.
Then it was battling all the way back with a huge second quarter to get within four at halftime.
Then it was clawing back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to get within two points in the fourth quarter.
Despite multiple comeback runs, the Panthers could never equal Everett, dropping their third straight by the score of 80-71."
