Town Council Last Week: A Momentary Return to a Public Presence

"Last Week when I laid out the plan to meet in the gym? Didn’t happen. That’s okay. Many of you expressed deep concern about holding an indoor meeting in a large venue, even with carefully planned social distancing. That careful planning and responsiveness to the concerns of all – by all – is why Franklin has maintained the second lowest infection rate statewide.

So, on Monday – new plan. This is what very large-scale social distancing looks like. We moved out to the football field. The weather gods cooperated, and we were able to accommodate all who wished to attend on site. The stats indicate that well over a thousand residents were listening to the important proceedings on both nights through 102.9 wfpr.fm, Franklin Public Radio.

As we all navigate our temporary new normal, we will continue to refine our plans for citizen access, participation – and above all, safety"

Franklin Latter-day Saints Invite Town to Watch Worldwide Broadcast on Peace

In a time of such uncertainty, random acts of kindness and neighborly love has and continues to be shown in abundance around the globe. A worldwide pandemic, such as the one we are facing now in COVID-19, has a way of uniting people of all denominations, races and beliefs. It's as if we are all brothers and sisters in an expansive global family. It just takes something as drastic as our current conditions to realize it.

Members of the local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Franklin would like to invite all to watch a global broadcast this weekend that aims to uplift, strengthen, and ultimately restore the sense of peace we all seek.

Franklin Primary Results - Live Broadcast scheduled for 8 PM

The Franklin Public Radio team is busy preparing for the live broadcast of the 2020 Primary results. The broadcast is scheduled to begin when the polls close at 8 PM.

We'll have some background material with the Franklin Town Clerk Teresa Burr and Assistant Clerk Nancy Danelo that was prepared when we sat for an interview in February.

We'll have some commentary from some of those gathered to hear the results. Following the results annouced by Teresa, we'll have some reflections on what the numbers tells us, if anything.

FPAC, Franklin TV, and Woonsocket Museum of Broadcast Technology Team Up to Bring Broadway to THE BLACK BOX for the Holidays

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), Franklin TV, and The Woonsocket Museum of Broadcast Technology will team up this December to bring a special holiday show to THE BLACK BOX. Together, they will present the world premiere of Christopher Rice's The Tappy Christmas Special: LIVE! based on Rice's viral #TAPPY video series which has been seen by more than 3 million people worldwide. Audiences are invited to be a part of the live studio audience at a magical, tap-dance infused, holiday special being filmed at THE BLACK BOX. The space will be transformed into a classic soundstage where Broadway's Christopher Rice will bring his Christmas variety show to life and whirl the audience away to a world filled with classic holiday songs, tap dancing feet, and special Broadway guests.

There's also a show behind the show: a story about what wondrously marvelous things can be accomplished when three nonprofit organizations combine their resources, skills, and efforts in common cause. Tappy Christmas will be a look back at the golden age of holiday TV specials enjoyed predominantly in the 1960s. Every year, these TV specials captured the festivities of the season. 

But how do you recreate a real 1960s TV special at THE BLACK BOX in 2019? That’s when Franklin TV (http://franklin.tv/) got involved. After taking a moment to contemplate the creative challenges, Franklin TV Executive Director Peter Fasciano said, “We’re all in.”

Then, a third local nonprofit was added to the team: The Woonsocket Museum of Broadcast Technology (http://www.wmbt.org/). Who better to provide real TV studio cameras that are authentic to the period? The museum often consults on and provides authentic studio equipment for major motion pictures and TV series. They ensure that old TV studio and control room sets are faithfully recreated. Together, the three artistic non profit organizations are recreating that old-school holiday TV Special at THE BLACK BOX.

Broadway’s Christopher Rice joined the FPAC family last season when he headlined the sold-out run of Disney's Newsies as Jack Kelly. Having just finished the run of Pretty Woman on Broadway, Rice's other credits include The Book of Mormon on Broadway, the national tours of West Side Story, White Christmas, and more. Rice’s viral #TAPPY videos rose to fame in 2013 with “‘Cups’ Tap Dance,” an intricate tap routine featuring Rice and other Broadway hoofers dancing to Anna Kendricks “Cups” from Pitch Perfect. 

Since then, he has choreographed, produced, and starred in numerous #TAPPY videos including two “Tappy Christmas Specials” featuring Broadway surprise guests stopping by to sing and dance for the holidays. These videos are the inspiration for the live show.

“We have an exciting lineup of Broadway and professional guest stars as well as some of our FPAC alumni,” says FPAC Director Raye Lynn Mercer. Rice and friends will also be joined by a select group of young local dancers chosen by Rice himself through a rigorous audition process. “That’s the best part about the holidays- you never know who might stop by!”

In the News: Ryan Martin selected 'Celtics Junior Broadcaster'; Grave search for America's first published poet

Ryan Martin selected 'Celtics Junior Broadcaster'

"Like many 14-year-old boys, Ryan Martin enjoys playing baseball and basketball. But unlike some of his peers, he already knows what he wants to do when he can’t play sports anymore. 

Ryan aspires to be a sports broadcaster, and earlier this month he got a taste of what his adult working life might look like. He was selected as a “Celtics Junior Broadcaster” after submitting a short video of himself to the NBA team, and his reward was to join the radio and TV crews for a March 14 Celtics game against the Sacramento Kings at TD Garden. 

Ryan was interviewed on air by NBC Sports Boston anchor/reporter Kyle Draper. He also joined Celtics commentator Sean Grande of 98.5 The Sports Hub for the radio station’s halftime show. 

“That night was truly unbelievable,” Ryan told the Daily News last week. “Just seeing the Celtics shooting around and being three inches away from (players) Al Horford and Aron Baynes. It was really a great experience.”

Grave search for America's first published poet

"Anne Bradstreet was the North American continent’s first published poet, yet her legacy has largely been lost to time. 

Now, professors and students at Merrimack College in Massachusetts are trying to pinpoint her burial site while at the same time restoring her legacy and what they say is her rightful place in the pantheon of Western literature. 

“Even though we don’t know much about her, she was a household name in the 17th century, both here and in England,” said Christy Pottroff, an assistant professor of English at Merrimack. 

Bradstreet’s 1650 book of poetry, “The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America,” was a sensation both in the Colonies and in her native England, where people were fascinated by her accounts of everyday life in the New World."

WFPR - 102.9 FM - A Radio Station Grows in Franklin

"It was a very big week for our soon-to-be community radio station WFPR, here in Franklin. On Tuesday, Jan 17 our new broadcast tower suddenly sprouted up at Forge Hill. On Friday our transmitter housing was installed in place. After years of planning, paperwork and preparations, it’s all finally coming together.

This week we install our FM antenna system and transmission equipment. Thus
far, the winter weather gods have been reasonably accommodating, and once our antennas are installed, the larger technical challenges will be behind us.

We’re also wiring up / firing up the audio equipment in our radio studio. We plan
to begin our on-air broadcast tests on Thursday, February 2nd, Groundhog Day.
(Just like in Bill Murray’s movie, if we don’t get it quite right, we get a do–over).

During the next few months we’ll be conducting program tests while we plan our full program schedule to be launched in spring. 

So, what do our programming plans look like? That’s where you come in. WFPR is Franklin’s community radio station. It will be powered and programmed by the passions of people who have something to say and music to play.
