My conversation with Paula Lupien, FHS Gymnastics Coach - 04/05/22 (audio)

FM #775 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 775 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Paula Lupien, Coach of the FHS Gymnastics team conducted on April 5, 2022.  Paula was announced in Dec 2021 as the Winner of the MIAA Coach of the Year award. We decided to wait until her season was complete  (and what a season it was) to have this conversation.

We talk about how she came into the role as coach after advocating to create a team, and how she has developed the program to be undefeated for 2 seasons in the Hockomock League, win the Sectionals this year, take 2nd in the State and then 1st at New England. What does the team do from here? It may be something of a building opportunity but the team is positioned to do good things next year and going forward.

The recording runs about 38 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Paula on April 5, 2022. Audio file ->  https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-775-paula-lupien-fhs-gymnastics-coach-04-05-22

HockomockSports.com: Player of the Week -> Emma White, Franklin Gymnastics

Franklin senior Emma White has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 27 through March 5. White is the 23rd player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2021-22 school year and the 12th of the winter season.

White continued her stellar senior season by adding another all-around title to her resume. She took home first place at the state championship meet that was held this weekend at Algonquin High, helping the Panthers finish in second place as a team and qualify for the upcoming New England meet. This title was added to the South Sectional and the Hockomock Gymnastics Championships all-around titles that White already claimed this winter.

“Emma has been a great athlete to coach these past two years,” said Franklin coach Paula Lupieb. “It’s been fun watching her gel with the team and excel in her craft! She performs with grace and power, as a senior she will be greatly missed."

Kat Cornetta's recap of the Championships in the Boston Globe:

"Masconomet had a 3.65 lead going into its final rotation, floor exercise, and built on it with a wide variety of routines. From Emma Quirk’s balletic turn to Brandt’s tribute to Paula Abdul that featured an opening double pike, their skills kept the title firmly in grasp.

Franklin senior Emma White was the day’s most dynamic gymnast, and it propelled the Panthers to second place and earned her the all-around title with a 38.925. White earned a 9.8 on balance beam, with a flawless tumbling series, followed by a moonwalk for good measure. A spirited floor exercise rotation for Franklin was capped by perfect routines by both Kate Rudolph and White, with White hitting both a double back and double pike to earn a 9.75.

“It’s unbelievable what they have been able to accomplish,” Franklin coach Paula Lupien said. “They continue to elevate their skills every time they step into the gym. They did everything they possibly could have today, and I couldn’t ask anything more out of them.”

FHS Emma White takes 2nd in All-Around

"The high school gymnastics community has been buzzing the past two years over the emergence of Masconomet sophomore Bella Misiura and Franklin senior Emma White. Due to the pandemic, Misiura and her two-time state champion Masconomet teammates had not had the opportunity to face Franklin, which jumped into the spotlight last winter thanks to White’s high-level gymnastics.
Misiura and White’s first all-around high school battle at Monday afternoon’s Massachusetts High School Gymnastics Coaches State Individual Championships at Tewksbury High School lived up to expectations.
The title came down to the last event, floor exercise. Both completed difficult double back tumbling passes, Misiura’s front tumbling was the difference-maker, earning her a 9.575 score that gave her the title over White, 38.275 to 38.125. "

The State level team championships are scheduled for Saturday, Feb 26

Despite her execution of a difficult double back tumbling pass, Franklin's Emma White (above) came up just short of Masconomet's Bella Misiura, whose narrow victory on the floor exercise propelled her to the all-around title. ERIN CLARK/GLOBE STAFF/ERIN CLARK

FHS boys hockey and gymnastics teams post wins on Wednesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the FHS winter sports action on Wednesday:

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 13 @ Mansfield, 5 – Final
– Justin Magazu scored four goals and had one assist and Dylan Marchand scored one and had five assists, as the Panthers won a shootout against rival Mansfield that moved them closer to a league title. Magazu scored twice in the first period along with goals by Domenic Lampasona and Christian Shabbick, as Franklin led 4-1 after one. Dillon Benoit (two goals and two assists) had the goal for the Hornets. Franklin added nine goals in the third period. Shabbick scored two to complete his hat trick, Magazu added two more, Ben Paterson scored twice, and Lampasona, Marchand, and Thomas Balducci each scored once. Benoit added his second goal for Mansfield. Matt Tourigney got one in the third and Kyle Oakley added two for the Hornets in the third period. Franklin finished with a 42-20 edge in shots. Cole Pouliot-Porter made seven saves and Joe Toracco made eight stops for the Panthers.

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 4 @ King Philip, 6 – Final
– King Philip’s Morgan Cunningham scored her fourth and fifth goals of the contest in the third period to help the Warriors win, avenging a loss to Franklin from December and splitting the season series between league rivals. Freshman Catie Putt gave KP the lead in the first period but Franklin freshman Julia Flynn scored her first of her four goals just three minutes later on the power play to make it 1-1 after a period of play. Cunningham and Flynn then put on a show, each scoring a second period hat trick as the teams traded goals to make it 4-4 going into the third. Sophomore Kelly Holmes recorded three assists, Sydney O’Shea added a pair while Putt and Jen Daniels each had one. Lindsay Dennett and Haley Wernig each had an assist for the Panthers.

Wrestling = Franklin, 12 @ Milford, 57 – Final
– Milford finished with six pins as a team, including pins in the final three matches of the meet, and rolled to a big win that clinched the outright league title for the second straight season. Aidan Baum kicked things off for the hosts at 106 with a pin a minute into the first period. Mike Boulanger scored a 6-0 win at 113 and then Robby Lyons got a major win at 120, winning 18-1 to add five points for the Hawks. Alex Castro’s 8-2 victory at 126 made it 17-0 and then Joey Testa pinned his opponent in the first period at 132. Franklin’s first points came with a quick pin by Timothy O’Leary, who needed :33 to get six points at 138. Luke Donis got the six right back with a disqualification win at 145. Donis was leading 5-2 in the third period when the match ended. Franklin’s Alex Fracassa had a pin in :35 to make it 29-9, but Danny Alves added four points for Milford with a 20-7 win at 160. Ryan Donovan added a second-period pin at 170 before Ryan Parlon won 5-0 at 182 for Franklin’s final points of the night. Cam Phillips (195), Hampton Kaye-Kuter (220), and Mike Mastroianni (285) added first-period pins to close out the meet for the Hawks.
