Franklin Public Schools: Letter from Superintendent Sara Ahern

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Community Members,

I hope this letter finds you enjoying these days of summer. As the summer winds down, I eagerly anticipate the start of the 2017-2018 school year. I have been saying that I should not be wishing my summer away, yet I am finding myself more excited than ever to start a school year. Much of my excitement is due to the extremely positive impressions of our district and community that I have developed in these early months as your Superintendent of Schools.

This summer has been a busy one! Our principals and administrators completed a busy hiring season and, as I write, we are welcoming a cohort of talented, new educators at New Educator Orientation. We continued a robust and rich summer program with Extended School Year, STAR enrichment programs, High School Experience, and Solutions. This summer has also been busy readying the schools for opening. I want to thank the faculty and staff, secretaries, custodians, Department of Public Works, and the Facilities Department who have been instrumental in implementing summer programs and completing summer projects to get the school year off to a great start.

My excitement for the school year also stems from the opportunity I will have to develop and strengthen relationships with students, families, and community members over the coming months. As a newcomer to Franklin, I am engaging in a systematic entry process, where I will spend the next several months learning as much as I can about the Franklin Public Schools. I also want to use this time to allow you to get to know me. I have been reviewing key documents, I am listening to stakeholders in the schools and community through forums and focus groups, and I will directly observe teaching and learning. This winter, I will present a Report of Findings, which will inform strategic goal setting in the spring.

I will be connecting to students, holding parent forums at each of our schools, and hosting open community forums this fall. More information about dates and locations will be coming soon. I recently presented my entry plan to the Franklin School Committee and I invite you to access it in our District News feed: http://www.franklin.k12.ma.us/Pages/FranklinDistrict_News/

Additionally, you can expect newsletters from the Superintendent’s Office on a regular basis beginning this fall.

We look forward to welcoming students (grades 1-12) back to school on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 and Kindergarten students on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. Please note that Friday, September 1, 2017 is a district-wide professional development day, and there will be no school for students. The first day for students at ECDC is Tuesday, September 5, 2017. It is going to be a great year!

Sincerely,
Sara E. Ahern, Ed.D.

Franklin SEPAC invites you to join us on

Thursday, May 18th at 7 PM
for the following workshop:

Mindfulness and Nutrition
 Presented by:
Ms. Christene Gerardi and Ms. Janice Houlihan
Join us for our final workshop of the year! We will be hearing from two wonderful presenters about ways to help your children both in school and out by focusing on two topics: Mindfulness and Nutrition.  Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way non-judgmentally.  Research is showing us that a daily mindfulness practice for kids can help counter act many symptoms of stress that we are seeing in our schools and that mindfulness can be the foundation to SEL programs as a way to get students "ready to learn".  Come and hear more about this practice and learn how you can do some mindfulness of your own at home.  Janice Houlihan, M.Ed. is a Co-Founder of a non-profit organization called Inner Explorer whose mission is to unlock academic potential and foster lifelong well-being for millions of children.  Inner Explorer currently operations nationwide and in 20 countries. We will then hear from Christene Lee Gerardi, EdM, an Integrative Medicine Educator, Consultant and Wellness Teacher who has studied both mainstream and integrative health and medicine for over 20 years. She began studying her now 18 year old stepson's sensory processing disorder 15 years ago and is making holistic decisions as she raises her now 9 year old daughter in an effort to prevent, recognize if needed and naturally treat. Because she enjoys food so much, it's her first line of defense!  Christene will show us 5 of the most important nutrients your child should be getting, and how to get them; along with 4 of the most detrimental foods your child is probably eating now and how to replace or eliminate them. In addition, Christene will provide a few natural and complementary therapies that have been shown to be beneficial to children with special needs.

This workshop will be held in the Third-floor training room of the Franklin Municipal Building, 355 East Central Street. As always this workshop is free and open to all. Please email us at franklinsepac@gmail.com with any questions. To learn more, please take a look at our website: www.franklinsepac.org or like us on Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/franklinsepac

About Franklin SEPAC:
The mission of the Franklin Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is to promote a network for parents of children with disabilities and provide a forum to share information and discuss matters of relative interest and concern regarding our children. This group provides regular forums for Pupil Personnel Services and parents to share information and discuss pertinent issues; develops, maintains and shares tools and a resource guide; and raises awareness of children with special needs.

We host monthly workshops educating parents on special-needs topics. We also hold support groups, fun meet-ups for the kids (like October's Halloween Party at Tangerini's Farm), and donate educational supplies to the Franklin Public School Special Education programs. We are a volunteer-run organization and need donations to help alleviate the costs of the above-mentioned programs. We receive our primary funding through an annual "Evening of Comedy" fundraiser that we host in April.

"the community support has to be there"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Local residents were invited Monday evening to meet the candidates vying to be the next leader of the school district.
More than 20 members of the public came to ask questions of the three finalists for the superintendent position: Blackstone-Millville Assistant Superintendent David Thomson, Chelmsford Assistant Superintendent Linda Hirsch and Weymouth Assistant Superintendent Susan Kustka.
The candidates were each asked about moving high school start times in light of data showing that teens perform better with a later start.
Hirsch stressed the importance of researching the change, suggesting a committee of stakeholders examine the issue."

MassBudget: Mother's Day and Paid Family Medical Leave

MassBudget  Information.
  Participation.
Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center  Democracy.

When we celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday, it's worth reflecting on how our state policies help mothers to balance family and job obligations (we should ask the same about fathers, but that's another day).

As MassBudget's new fact sheet explains, most working parents in Massachusetts don't currently get paid time off to bond with a new child. That's not the way it is in most of the world - or in several other states. In Rhode Island, New York, California, and New Jersey, state laws create an insurance-style system that pays a portion of the wages of parents caring for a new child or any working person who needs time away from work to care for an ill relative. These laws also protect people who may have a serious illness and are forced to leave work for an extended period of time.

Since last Mother's Day, Massachusetts has implemented an earned sick time law that allows parents to take time off from work to take a child to a medical appointment, as well as to tend to their own medical needs. That law is now enabling parents across the state to take a child to the doctor during the day when needed - rather than going to the emergency room after work. It is a modest, but important, step in creating policies that recognize the challenges that working parents face.

MassBudget's new fact sheet Paid Family and Medical Leave and Related Policies Explained describes existing leave laws in Massachusetts that help working people balance work and family obligations and examines some of the gaps in those policies that paid family and medical leave policies can address.

Opioid Abuse in Massachusetts: What Parents Need to Know

"The number of annual deaths related to opioid use in Massachusetts increased dramatically between 2000 and 2014, according to the Department of Public Health (DPH). Parents should be aware that young people are at high risk of becoming involved in this fatal epidemic. Data provided by Governor Baker’s Opioid Working Group indicates that 74 percent of individuals with a substance use disorder began using by age 17.
With resources from DPH, start a discussion about opioid abuse with your children, and learn how the Opioid Working Group is taking steps to protect young people from addiction."

"When my oldest was about a week old I remember looking down into his beautiful eyes and being struck by an overwhelming sense of fear. Icy terror washed over me as I realized the full weight of my responsibility for this tiny human. How was I going to do this right? What was I going to do wrong? I knew I’d do something wrong, would it scar him for life? I was the one who would have to teach him to navigate a world I was not sure I fully understood myself.
We are parents. We have all had this moment, and the fear stays with us……forever. These tiny beings may grow taller than us, they may move across the country and have tiny beings of their own someday – but they will always remain our innocent, irreplaceable miracles, and we will always be their parents."
