Register for Webinar: "Environmental Health Impacts of Synthetic Turf and Safer Alternatives"

Register for the webinar scheduled for Thursday, Jan 27 at 1 PM (EDT)  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_WgWkhcYzS7GJPefMgDqpUg

Research on the production, use, and disposal of artificial turf has brought to light concerns over environmental contamination, human health hazards, and adverse effects on wildlife. Researchers have studied a variety of contaminants found in artificial turf and different types of infill used to soften its surfaces. Concerns have been raised about polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), 6PPD-quinone, and microplastics, among others. Studies have also examined heat related illnesses, skin infections, and other human health concerns. During this webinar Rachel Massy, ScD, Lindsey Pollard, MS, and Zhenyu Tian, PhD, will discuss their work looking at environmental health impacts of artificial turf and safer alternatives.

Dr. Rachel Massey and Lindsey Pollard will discuss the research they have conducted at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) on health and environmental implications of artificial turf and safer alternatives. They will describe their research on materials used as artificial turf infill, including waste tire materials. They will also touch upon emerging information on chemicals in artificial turf grass blades, as well as other health and environmental concerns associated with artificial turf, such as microplastic pollution and high surface temperatures. They will briefly discuss their research on natural grass athletic fields as a safer alternative.

Dr. Zhenyu Tian will briefly summarize the identification of 6PPD-quinone as a lethal toxicant for coho salmon, and will further introduce the comprehensive screening of organic contaminants in urban stormwater and tire wear particle leachate. He will discuss knowledge gaps and ongoing research about crumb rubber infill materials.

This webinar will be moderated by Sarah Howard, Founder and Manager, DiabetesandEnvironment.org. It will last for 70 minutes and will be recorded for our call and webinar archive.

This Lunch and Learn will introduce Training Active Bystanders which has been brought to MetroWest through a collaboration between Open Spirit and Jewish Family Services.

Rev. Dr. Debbie Clark and a TAB trainer will give an overview of the training developed by Quabbin Mediation which draws upon research and the wisdom of the gathered participants to identify barriers to active bystandership and develop ways to overcome them. You will leave this Lunch and Learn with a better understanding and tools to move from silence to action in 2022.

MA News: Somerville schedules a 'Yart Sale'; Weather service schedules webinars

What is a ‘Yart Sale,’ exactly? Somerville is hosting its first one

"If you took up an artistic hobby like so many others while stuck indoors at the height of the pandemic, or if you’re a seasoned veteran with a lens, brush, or knitting needle, this might be the perfect chance to share — and perhaps even sell — your work with the community.

On August 14, Somerville is hosting its first “Yart Sale,” a citywide event that welcomes artists of all calibers to set up shop on their porches, or in their yards and driveways, and sell their artwork to passersby.

The event is a mix between the city’s annual pop-up musical gathering, PorchFest, and Open Studios, where artists open up their workspaces, in that attendees can hop from one neighborhood to the next throughout the day to see what’s on display."

Reminder: The Rise of Dolley Madison - May 11

Why First Lady Dolley Madison spells her name with an “e” is up to speculation. However, Mrs. Madison’s legacy goes far beyond the unconventional spelling of her name. Join us for a virtual performance to learn about the twists and turns of Mrs. Madison’s storied life as well as her largely unknown contributions to the evolution of our country.

You will learn about this “fashionista’  First Lady’s  life as a Quaker child, the tragedies and serendipities she faced in Philadelphia, her unlikely marriage to James Madison, determining role in her husband’s presidential-election victory 1809, transformation of the barren White House into a national treasure, strategies that united a fractured, contentious Congress and personal regrets as a mother.

Janet Parnes, founder of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, Millis will portray Mrs. Madison.

Did you know? The Community Preservation Act (CPA) webinar gets into the nitty gritty today

Did you know... there will be a dive deep into the nitty gritty of how the Community Preservation Act (CPA) works in the webinar Thursday night (October 15, 2020 - 7:00 PM)?

There are three points to remember:

1. Every residential property is given a deduction for the first $100,000 of value before the CPA surcharge is calculated.

2. Moderate income seniors can apply for an exemption from the CPA surcharge

3. Low income families can apply for an exemption from the CPA surcharge
These three exemptions were chosen by the Town Council to minimize the impact on residents while gaining the benefits of CPA for the Franklin community.

But for that promised deep dive, please connect to the Zoom webinar Thursday night via your computer, tablet or phone. Details for connecting are posted in the Facebook Event
https://www.facebook.com/events/348059139868931
