Addressing many of the mandates, Ludlow Public Schools Superintendent Todd Gaza said at the hearing, "The new teacher evaluation regulations, bullying legislation, implementation of the Common Core … all require professional development for our teachers in order to meet their requirements. This leaves little time for other professional activities."
Daniel Gutekanst testified that the grind to put in place all of the mandates actually steals time away from improving classroom learning.
"The pace of change and reform is grueling and unrelenting," Gutekanst said. "Teachers, school staff and principals are increasingly required to address and attend to mandates and initiatives that leave them little time to personalize learning experiences for children in their charge."

Shuttle buses replacing Franklin Line from 06:00 AM to 08:00 PM on Sat Jul 13, 2013 due to track work
When I saw the notice about Beaver St being closed for track work on Saturday, I expected to hear about what that work would do to the train schedule. The notification has arrived. There will be shuttle bus service between Forge Park and downtown Franklin to avoid the track work on Saturday. If you are going to Boston, simply start from downtown Franklin, don't use Forge Park. You'll avoid the shuttle!

Summer Sprouts - July 13-14 from 9:00am to 11:00am
From the Franklin Community Garden website:
Please join us on July 13th and 14th, from 9am to 11am, at the King St. Memorial Garden for child focused gardening events. Grown-up children welcome as well! Attendees can make their own pots and plant green beans in them to take home. We will also be planting green beans in the garden itself. These beans will then be available for children to harvest at events on September 7th and 8th, when the beans are mature.

We will also be giving tours of the garden to help children identify the plants that grow the fruits and vegetables that they love, or refuse, to eat. This is an excellent opportunity to have your children learn about where their food comes from, and eat something they've grown from seed. In the short time since the garden was founded we've had numerous parents comment on the difference growing their own vegetables made in their children's eating habits. This is an opportunity for the community at large to join in the fun, so please tell your friends!

Wedding Gowns at the Franklin Historical Museum
This summer the popular Wedding Gown Exhibit has returned once again to the Franklin Historical Museum. Volunteers from the Franklin Historical Commission have been hard at work sewing, mending, ironing, dressing mannequins and researching in preparation for the exhibit.
wedding dress on exhibit |
The ever popular Parachute Gown from the 1940’s, worn by Emma Velluti and made from silk material from a Japanese parachute, sent home by the groom Edward Rabaioli, is the centerpiece dress once again this year. A gown from the late 1800s with accent pieces recently discovered by comparing photographs to items in the museum’s bridal collection is on display. A beautiful Pricilla of Boston gown from 1954 adorned with tiny blue flowers is shown. On loan for the exhibit is a hoop style gown worn by Rosalie DeBaggis at her wedding to Charlie Crevo in 1959 as well as Rosalie’s mother’s Flapper Style wedding dress from 1930. Most dresses have pictures or stories to accompany them along with names, dates and details of the couples.

Have you ever wondered when the fashion for brides to wear white began? It wasn’t always the case. Where did the custom to wear ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue’ come from? Why does the bride throw her bouquet? Just how much influence did a young Queen Victoria have on today’s modern weddings? You’ll find it out when you visit the Franklin Historical Museum from now through mid September and experience the Wedding Gown Exhibit.
The Museum is open Thursdays 5:00-8:00pm; Saturdays 10:00am – 1:00pm and Sundays 1:00pm – 4:00pm and is located at 80 West Central Street, downtown Franklin.
