"Members of the Town Council debated this week whether the town’s elected officials should be allowed to serve on appointed boards. 

The matter came up at the council meeting on Wednesday, when a measure updating the bylaw regarding the Library Board of Directors arose. Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said the change was to update rules first passed in the 1990s. 

Council Chairman Matthew Kelly, though, noted that the bylaw prevented elected officials from sitting on the board. He asked why, adding that he believed council participation on such boards would help town organizations adhere to the master plan. 

Nutting said the library had been running smooth before without council members on its board."

World premiere of “Call of Kairos" - June 9 at Dean College

The world premiere of “Call of Kairos” will take place at 8 p.m. June 9, and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. June 10-11 at the Dean College Main Stage Theater, 105 W. Central St.

The show features contemporary choreography by Helena Froehlich, world class Latin ballroom dancers, live music by jazz musician Stan Strickland and actor/musician Kenny Raskin, known for his unique characters in “Cirque d’ Soleil” and in Broadway’s “Beauty and the Beast.”

The show, described as a blend of dance, theater, film and live music, was inspired by a 30-minute independent film recently produced by Spectral Unicorn, a Boston dance/film/theatre company. The film features the story of two women living very different lives in very different worlds who find each other during a time of crisis.

Cassell's Corner features FHS Girls Lacrosse Coach Kristin Igoe (audio); FHS girls advance to D1 Finals

"This week, Cassell’s Corner host Tommy Cassell talks with Franklin girls lacrosse coach Kristin Igoe and Natick girls lacrosse coach Tanner Guarino. 

Igoe’s Franklin girls are competing tonight, June 7, at home against King Philip in the Division 1 East semifinals. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. 

“Their goal and my goal is to win a state championship,” Igoe told Cassell. 

Igoe won two state championships in lacrosse at Framingham High School. The Framingham Flyers won in 2006 and 2007. Both Igoe and Guarino were on the 2007 team, and Guarino won her second state championship in 2010."

– Franklin built an 8-3 lead at halftime and never looked back in the D1 East Semifinal matchup with KP. Freshman Erin Walsh led the way with seven goals, Annie Walsh (eight draws) added four goals and Kendall Reardon found the back of net twice. Halle Atkinson and Grace McDermott each had three draw wins for Franklin. The Panthers advance to their third Div. 1 East Final in the past four years and will face #2 Concord-Carlisle on Friday at 7:00 at Milford High.

In the News: tasting room bylaw advances; Tri-County graduation

"The Town Council gave preliminary approval Wednesday night to bylaw changes that would allow tasting rooms at local microbreweries. 

The council voted favorably on the first reading of two bylaw amendments at the meeting. It will have to vote on the amendments again, at a future meeting, before they take affect. 

Deputy Town Administrator Jamie Hellen spoke to the council about the purpose of the legislation, saying it would allow microbreweries and local wineries to have rooms where their products may be sampled. 

“It would be allowed in all commercial districts, and prohibited in all residential districts,” he said."

"Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School handed out 231 diplomas to the Class of 2017 during its 38th graduation ceremony on Sunday. 

Joining Superintendent-Director Stephen Dockray on stage were School Committee Chairman Steven Trask of Franklin, School Committee member Janice Young of Walpole, principal Michael Procaccini, vocational director Jean George, Valedictorian Samantha Frey of Medway, Salutatorian Kathleen Loonie of North Attleborough, and Class President Zachary Currier of North Attleborough. 

Frey advised her classmates that, while there will be bumps in the road of their lives, as long as they give their best efforts, they will not fail. 

“Through your hard work, you have learned and you have grown through experience,” Frey said. “In order to continue our personal growth, we need to leave old habits behind. As we progress into our futures, we need to act more like adults and be more mature ... leaving behind poor habits allows us to cross the threshold into adulthood.”

“I’m looking forward to just riding”

"The “Neuroblastoma Ninjas” will be one team vying to raise money for cancer research at this weekend’s Pan Mass Challenge Kids Ride at Jefferson Elementary School. 

This Sunday will feature the 11th annual running of the Franklin kids ride, an event that has raised more than $370,000 over the course of its existence. 

The Ninjas team, which first rode in the event four years ago, was started in honor of local resident Noah Smith. Graydon Smith, Noah’s father, said the team was first known as “Noah’s Ninjas.” 

“When (Noah) was first diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at age 10, his sister created and led the team,” he said. “Noah was in no condition to ride the first year but, in the second year, he did ride six miles - he had to take stops to get oxygen.”
