9:00 - 8:00: Post-It Note Collage at Franklin Public Library ~ In celebration of ArtWeek 2019, the Youth Services department will be building a Post-It Note Collage! But we need your help! Stop by anytime during the week to help add post-it notes to the wall. What will the final image be?? Only time will tell!!

1:00 - 3:00: Fabric Vase & Flower Arrangement Project at the Franklin Senior Center (FREE)
This fun spring activity will be offered by the Franklin Garden Club, who will provide the materials and instruction to create beautiful fabric vases and flower arrangements. Register with the Senior Center at 508-520-4945.

2:30 - 4:00: Little Red's Puppetry Workshop at the Franklin Public Library (FREE) Theater in the Open presents a puppetry performance of Little Red Riding Hood, set to music by Newburyport Chamber Music Festival's David Yang, followed by a workshop on the construction and use of traditional hand puppets. Try out our puppets, and then make your own!

Franklin Garden Club: meeting on Container Gardening features Kim Cook, Briggs Nursery - May 7

Kim Cook of Briggs Nursery, will present a program on Container Gardening at the Tuesday, May 7, 2019, meeting of the Franklin Garden Club. The meeting will be held at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street, Franklin, from 7 – 9 PM, beginning with an informal social at 6:30 PM. 

It is open to the public at no charge. The presentation will provide information on selecting different types of containers and potting soil, choosing plants that complement each, designing arrangements, and maintaining the containers.

Cook has worked a Briggs Nursery for many years where her responsibilities include designing many of the planters that are on exhibit throughout the nursery. She is experienced in growing many types of plants, including herbs, vegetables, perennials and annuals and in how they may be incorporated into container gardening.

Baseball = Attleboro, 6 @ Franklin, 10 – Final
– Franklin senior Scott Elliott blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence to lead the Panthers to a win over visiting Attleboro. Jake Macchi (two runs) and Cooper Ross (two RBI, run) each added three hits for the Panthers while Alex Haba had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, JB Floris knocked in two runs, and Jack Nally had a double, walked twice, scored three times and had one RBI. Liam Dailey pitched for the Panthers, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. Attleboro Lorenzo Wilson went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Softball = Franklin, 14 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin scored two runs in the top of the first inning and tacked on six more in the second en rout to a win over Attleboro. The Panthers put the game out of reach with six more runs in the seventh inning. Maddy White went 3-for-4 and knocked in six runs, including a two-run double in the first and a three-run home run in the seventh. Sarah Jackson launched her third home run of the year, this one a three-run shot, in the second inning to help Franklin build its lead. Jackie Cherry allowed six hits while striking out 10 batters to get the win.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– It was a clean sweep for Franklin’s singles players, all winning in straight sets without dropping a game. Liam Marr (first singles), Rohan Herur (second), and Vayshnav Malhotra (third) each won 6-0, 6-0, the team of Lucas Gulick and Shoumik Sompally earned a 6-3, 6-2 win while Ryan McSweeney and Thomas Broyles teamed up for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Senate President Karen Spilka Appoints Three Members to Citizens Commission

Senate President Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland) appointed three members to serve on a newly-created Citizens Commission to advocate for a potential constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 ruling in Citizens United, with the goal of curtailing corporate political donations.

"Big money has been shown to have a corrupting influence in our politics, and I am excited to see the work of the new Citizens Commission get underway," said Senate President Spilka. "These three individuals are experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated to public service. I have every confidence they will ably advocate for Massachusetts' interests when it comes to the regulation of Citizens United."

Noval Alexander serves on the Framingham School Committee and Framingham School Building Committee. He is a substitute teacher in the towns of Needham, Wellesley and Natick. Alexander is a decorated retired Army veteran who served 25 years in the Army Reserves and two tours of Active Duty.

Jay Marsden serves as Chair of the Holliston Board of Selectmen. He is an estate planning lawyer at Marsden Law P.C. and works as a financial planner at Solares Hill Advisors.

Costas Panagopoulos is a Professor of Political Science at Northeastern University. He previously directed the Center for Electoral Politics and Democracy at Fordham University.

Massachusetts is the first state to create a Citizens Commission. Appointments were made by Senate President Spilka, Governor Charles Baker, Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, Attorney General Maura Healey, and Secretary of State William Galvin. The application process was public and on a website created by the Governor's office.

All appointees to the Citizens Commission serve on a voluntary basis without compensation. A report with recommendations for constitutional amendments is due by December 31, 2019.

A 2018 ballot measure, which passed with 71.4% of the vote, created the non-partisan, 15-member commission.

Updated MBTA Franklin Line schedule begins May 20

"Spring/Summer Commuter Rail schedules go into effect on Monday, May 20, 2019 and are now available on the MBTA website at mbta.com."

For convenience, I have the new Franklin schedule here. I don't see any real changes to the actual schedule (focusing on the morning and evening peak hours). They seem to have removed the winter conditional statements from this. If I did miss something, please let me know.

FPAC to Host 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run - May 5

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) will close out its ArtWeek programming with the FPAC 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, May 5 starting with check-in at 9 AM and the race beginning at 10 AM. 

The 5K Road Race and 1 mile Fun Run will begin and end at the company's home THE BLACK BOX at 15 W. Central St. in downtown Franklin. Along the route, runners will be entertained and encouraged by sidewalk art created by student artists. 

THE BLACK BOX theater will feature face painting and finish line sign making for children and a celebration with live music in the theater lobby to congratulate the runners.

April 30, 2019 To the Tri-County Community, One MCAS exam down and two more to go. It's a very busy spring here at TC with MCAS exams, spring sports, robotics and Skills USA State Championships all happening at once. Our sophomores sat for our first MCAS electronic on-line exam just before vacation. The students were more experienced at taking the exam in this format than we were in giving it. Our concerns regarding infrastructure, bandwidth, and all the assorted electronic aspects of the exam were not realized and things went off without a hitch.  Many thanks to Mrs. Beckmann and the academic and special education teachers that proctored the exam, they spent a great deal of time preparing and I'm sure it will pay off. Spring sports are in full swing and we are getting some games in despite the weather. Spring is always a challenge. If it's not raining, it's drying off from raining. All of our teams including baseball, softball, lacrosse, and track have winning records and are looking towards making their state tournament competition goals. We also have several girls participating in a girl's lacrosse club team as well. The next couple of weeks will really round out seasons as we participate almost every day in either a scheduled or a makeup game.  Our robotics team had a great year qualifying for the First Robotics State Competition, they came up a little short at states of reaching their goal of returning to the World Championships in Detroit. One of our HUNCH teams visited NASA as well to demonstrate their design, please read about their account below on our website. Over sixty of our best craftsmen qualified for the Skills USA State Competition with 5 students winning Gold, again please read the full account below. John Winship represented TC at the State Vocational Student of the Year dinner. Congratulations John!  Julia Farrell was awarded the Dean College Scholarship for next year. Congratulations Julia! Over 200 district eighth graders were here this past Saturday taking our ninth grade placement exam as part of their application/entry process for TC. Thanks to all the parents that got the students here and stayed around to discover our school while the students took the exam. The spring festivities continue this weekend with our Junior-Senior Prom Friday evening. Then it's on to finals, Senior week, and graduation.
