Liturgy of Easy Walks: a conversation with Marjorie Turner Hollman - 03/28/22 (audio)

FM #764 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 764 in the series.

This session shares my conversation with local area author Marjorie Turner Hollman. Our conversation was conducted via conference bridge to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.

We had an easy conversation catching up with Marjorie since we had last talked in Sep 2020. Marjorie has just released a new book now, My Liturgy of Easy Walks. More of a memoir than an easy walk guide, she gets into the back story on how and why she developed easy walks in a series of essays as she recovered.

Let’s listen to my conversation with Marjorie which runs about 20 minutes.

Kaitlyn Carney and Stella Regan; 2 of the Ten Girls Lacrosse Players to Watch for 2022 Hockomock League

HockomockSports.com has posted their listing of the Ten Players to Watch for 2022 for Girls Lacrosse. We shared the info on Kaitlyn Carney and Stella Regan of FHS and provide the link to the full listing.

KAITLYN CARNEY, JUNIOR – FRANKLIN

Carney finally got to step onto the lacrosse field for Franklin last season and showed off the skills that have made her a Div. I recruit. The James Madison-commit tied for the team lead with 36 goals last season and added 11 assists while bringing her trademark intensity to the middle of the field. Strong, quick, and willing to be physical in the attack, it was hard to keep Carney out from the middle of the crease and her creative finishing meant that she was a threat to score any time that she was around the cage. She was also unfazed by the biggest stage, scoring a pair of goals against Westwood in last year’s state title game. With the array of attacking talent at Franklin’s disposal, goals are going to be spread around and Carney’s ability to draw attention from multiple defenders will open up scoring chances for her teammates. Franklin is back to having one of the toughest schedules in the state to help prepare it for another deep tournament run and Carney is one of the dynamic players that could help win a first state title for the Panthers.

STELLA REGAN, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

One of the best facilitators in the Franklin offense, Regan creates as many chances for her teammates as she does for herself, and her endless supply of energy in the midfield makes her a key player on both ends of the field. The Colby College commit scored 28 goals last season and assisted on 32 others, providing key passes for the wide array of attacking talent that the Panthers throw on the field. A quick, athletic player, who now seems to be fully healed from the broken leg she suffered as a sophomore, Regan can beat players off the dodge and then pick out the perfect pass to get teammates clean looks at goal. Coupling her speed in transition with her patience and willingness to move the ball against a set defense makes her vital to Franklin’s balance on offense. She knows when to push and when it is time to step back and keep possession. Coming off an appearance in the state title game, expectations might never be higher around the program and Regan will be one of many players that Franklin is counting on to take that final step and bring home silverware this spring.

FHS baseball, softball and tennis teams post wins on Tuesday; discus school record for Lily Deforge

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the FHS spring sports action on Tuesday:

Baseball = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 10 – Final (5 Inn.)
– Alfred Mucciarone gave up one hit over four innings and Ethan Voellemicke struck out the side in the fifth, as Franklin shut out Attleboro for its second win in as many days. Chris Goode and Evan Raider each drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers. Attleboro’s best chance came in the first Nate George drew a leadoff walk and two batters later Danny Johnson hit a sinking liner to right, but Eisig Chin made a stellar diving catch. Franklin took control in the bottom half with four runs. Ryan Gerety led off with a single and Jack Marino was hit by a pitch.

Attleboro failed to handle a pair of bunts and both runners came in to score. Chin drove in a run with a single and would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch. Franklin added three more in the second. One-out walks to Joe Tirrell and Gerety and an infield single for Marino loaded the bases. Goode plated one with a sac fly and Raider followed with a single to bring in two. In the third, Franklin took advantage of a couple errors to add three more runs. Ben Jarosz singled and would score on a wild pitch, Henry DiGiorgio reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error, and Tirrell walked and came in to score on a sac fly from Goode. Hayden Hagerty broke up Mucciarone’s no-hitter to start the fourth but Franklin’s starter retired the next three hitters to strand the runner in scoring position.

Softball = Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final
– Franklin scored once in each of the first three innings and tacked on two key insurance runs in the top of the sixth to get the win on the road over Attleboro. Julia White had a one-out single in the top of the first and came around to score after a fielder’s choice and an error to put the Panthers ahead 1-0 but Attleboro answered with a run of its own to make it 1-1. Junior Hailey Fales had a one-out single in the top of the season, and courtesy runner Kelly Moussa scored after White grounded out to second with the bases loaded for a 2-1 lead. Georgia Harvey turned a leadoff single in the top of the third into a run to make it 3-1 before Attleboro made it a one-run game with sac fly in the bottom half. Reece Allen and Moussa came around to score in the top of the fifth for insurance. Aislinn Lavery got the win for Franklin, allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and no walks. Lindsey Perry was strong in the circle for Attleboro in a complete game effort, with just earned runs allowed with two strikeouts and two walks.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin grabbed its second win in as many days, this time sweeping all five matches in straight sets to knock off Attleboro. Vayshnav Malhotra and Thomas Broyles both won 6-0, 6-0 at first and second singles, respectively, while Drew Mahoney earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of Tim O’Keefe and Ahan Shetty battled for a 7-5, 6-4 win at first doubles while Sameen Shaik and Jay Gorgas took a 6-0, 6-2 decision at second doubles.

Girls Tennis = Attleboro, 2 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– For the second straight match, Franklin swept both doubles matches and had a third win from third singles to get the win. Amulya Jayam and Shriya Rasish battled to a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win at first doubles, and Franklin’s second doubles team of Chloe Essam and Sydney Tolonen secured a 6-4, 6-1 win. Sarah Schiavo earned his second win of the season, taking a 6-4, 6-4 decision at third singles for the Panthers. Attleboro’s Ella Lynch-Bartek won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles while sophomore Maddie Fuscaldo prevailed with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles.

Boys Outdoor Track = Franklin, 50 @ Mansfield, 77 – Final
– Anchored by double-winners Dana Johnson, Dylan Buchanan, and Charles Newcomb, Mansfield opened the season with a win over Franklin. Johnson won both the long jump (19’7.5”) and the triple jump (41’3”), and added second place finish in the 110M hurdles (16.5). Buchanan won the 110M hurdles in 15.5 and won the javelin with a toss of 112’8, and Newcomb won both the shot put (40’6) and the discus (89’0). HockomockSports.com: FHS softball preview for Spring 2022 season

FRANKLIN
2021 Record: 6-9
2021 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South Preliminary Round
Coach: Katie Holbrook

Last season, Franklin showed that it could score runs in bunches, hitting double digits in five of its 15 games, but the Panthers could also allow runs in bunches with teams reaching double digits six times. With seven returning players, second-year coach Katie Holbrook is hoping that experience and depth will carry the Panthers back up the standings and into the postseason.

Franklin will have depth in the circle this season with senior Aislinn Lavery taking the bulk of the innings and junior Kiera Kotwicki able to step in when needed. Both will mix pitches and keep teams off-balance. Junior Hailey Fales will be back behind the plate, adding another layer of experience to the pitching staff. Senior Julia White battled an injury all spring in 2021 but she is back healthy and back in the middle of the infield and the order. Junior Georgia Harvey is a versatile player who can fill in at multiple positions and batted 0.426 as a sophomore.

Sophomore Carly Johnson-Pellegri had an impressive rookie season and will be moving from second to short and senior Hannah Cacciapaglia is back at first, and in the middle of the order, after recovering from an injury that kept her out all of last spring. The outfield looks strong for the Panthers this season. Senior Kelly Moussa has a strong arm in right and juniors Reece Allen and Dana Stott are two newcomers that could play big roles for the team this season.

“We have a lot of different players who can jump in and be the spark at any given moment,” Holbrook said. “There are a lot of new players in the mix, but they are already showing signs of coming together as a team and leadership is not lacking in this group. If they can remain poised and confident and play their game, we should do well this season.”

HockomockSports.com: Girls Basketball Awards recognize Peterson, Padula, and Quinn

HockomockSports.com has posted their listing of awards for Girls Basketball for the Winter 2021-2022 season. We shared the FHS selections and provide the link to the full listing.

First Team

Katie Peterson – Franklin – Forward
Franklin junior forward Katie Peterson made a huge leap this season, developing from a role player on last year’s team into the leading scorer this season. Peterson averaged 14 points per game, while also leading the team in steals and deflections and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. With the range to stretch defenses and the ability to take it to the basket off the dribble, Peterson helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title, completing a perfect Hock campaign, and advancing to the Div. 1 Elite Eight. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “I am so proud of Katie’s development this season. Her athleticism and hard work has helped her become a dominant player in our league.

Second Team

Stefany Padula – Franklin – Guard
Franklin senior guard Stefany Padula developed into one of the league’s top outside shooters and one of its top perimeter defenders this season. The Springfield College commit helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Padula averaged 11 points per game and shot 40 percent from long-range this season, giving the Panthers a threat from deep to complement its strength in the paint. Padula was selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Stef has served as a role model to younger players in our program. She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

Olivia Quinn – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior forward Olivia Quinn had another impressive season for the Panthers, helping them win a fourth straight Kelley-Rex division title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Franklin lost only one league game (and six games overall) in her four-year career. The Wesleyan University commit averaged 11 points per game this season and finished with 904 for her career (missing out on reaching 1,000 because of the COVID-shortened 2021 season). She also came up big in the playoffs with 23 and 25 points in her final two games. She was selected as a league all-star. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Olivia is one of the best players to ever come out of this program. She has played an integral role in our unprecedented success over her four years.”

All Defensive Team

Stefany Padula, Franklin
Padula, a senior guard, is a tireless worker who has developed her game in so many ways over the course of her four-year career. This season she became one of the league’s top perimeter defenders, frequently being matched up with the opposition’s best scorers. Her work rate, length, and ability to read the game made her tough to shake. Franklin coach John Leighton called her the “top defender” on the league champion Panthers, adding, “She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

“The minimum offer price rule appears to act as a barrier to competition"

"THE NEW ENGLAND power grid operator filed a proposal with federal regulators on Monday seeking more time to come up with a system for incorporating clean energy into the region’s electricity markets.
The grid operator, known as ISO-New England, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to put off until 2025 plans to do away with a 2013 pricing rule intended to prevent subsidized clean energy projects from unfairly squeezing other power generators (most of whom burn fossil fuels) out of the market. ISO-New England had previously planned to do away with the pricing rule next year.
In a statement accompanying the filing, ISO-New England said a longer transition period is warranted because it “will create less risk to the region than an immediate market change could evoke.”
Environmental advocates are opposing the move. “This decision throws an unnecessary lifeline to gas generators that could otherwise be priced out of the market by cost-effective clean energy,” said Melissa Birchard, senior regulatory attorney at Acadia Center. "
