Rockland Trust Hosts Gelato Buyout - Oct 5 from 3:30 PM, first 75 get a small gelato of choice

In honor of “National Do Something Nice Day,” Rockland Trust will host a Gelato Buyout Event at downtown Franklin’s APPLAUSE – Gelato and Unique Finds. This afternoon, on October 5, beginning at 3:30, the first 75 customers can enjoy a small gelato of choice in celebration of random acts of kindness.

APPLAUSE, located at 34 Main Street, is an Italian-inspired gelateria that opened in April of this year. Eight flavors of gelato are served daily with new offerings that include Espresso and Affogato combining espresso and gelato for a delicious treat.

Flavors for the special Rockland Trust event will be fall specials Maple Butter Pecan and Apple Crisp, kid favorite Cookies and Cream, as well as Madagascar Vanilla Bean, Belgian Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Mango Sorbetto.

“We appreciate this community outreach by our neighbors at Rockland Trust and hope to introduce APPLAUSE to some new members of the community,” proprietor Raye Lynn Mercer notes. “In our downtown block, we promote and encourage kindness as part of our mission at APPLAUSE, Intermission CafĂ©, and the Franklin School for the Performing Arts. It’s lovely to have a day and an event to celebrate it!”

As always, we will discuss our work on 350 Mass' campaigns for 2023-24: Make Polluters Pay and Emissions Free Buildings. Read about them here

We will also review local and statewide developments and opportunities in climate and energy advocacy.

Here are some details and actions for your attention.

Make Polluters Pay:  Make Polluters Pay is a campaign supporting legislation that will create a climate superfund, penalizing the worst polluters of greenhouse gasses, and funding resilience and adaptation projects in communities most impacted by climate change. 350 Mass joins with several partner organizations to drive a grassroots campaign to hold polluters accountable. The fund will raise an estimated $75 billion over 25 years from the largest polluting companies. This influx of funds will enable the commonwealth to prepare for the coming climate impacts, guided by the vision of the communities with most at stake. This campaign is part of a national push to Make Polluters Pay, as we are campaigning alongside political leaders and activists in Vermont, Maryland, and New York. For more info, check out the campaign website.  See the upcoming events.  Sign the petition.

Global Power Up Day of Action. On November 3-4, as fossil fuel companies publish another round of obscene billion-dollar profits, climate organizations and activists will take to the streets to show that a world powered by clean and fair renewable energy is ours to make. On every continent, we'll take action to demand a global renewable energy revolution. We'll spotlight the oil industry's greed and reclaim the money and power to fund a just future powered by the sun and the wind. Follow and sign up for actions in Massachusetts

New 350 Mass Activity:  Lunch.Climate.Action.  A Monthly Action on the second Wednesday of each month.  The goal of Lunch.Climate.Action is to create a forum for quick, timely actions (calling a rep, writing a letter, etc.) that allows folks to ask questions, learn, and act in a safe, supportive community. All are welcome to come dip their toes in the warm waters of activism! Meet on Zoom for 45 minutes. This Month's Spotlight:  Stopping Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere!  Wednesday, October 11 at 12:00 noon.  RSVP on this page to receive zoom information.

If you haven't already done so, please sign up for the Climate Weekly email. Also, check out upcoming events on our website

Please try to join us for Thursday's meeting. If you have questions or items for the agenda, you can contact the Node coordinators,   carolyncbarthel@gmail.com  and/or   ralph.halpern@comcast.net.    We will send a reminder on Thursday.

HockomockSports.com: Game of the Week Preview: Taunton at Franklin

"Only through the first four weeks of the season, teams are already experiencing momentum swings. This week’s Game of the Week, presented by Notturno Plumbing and Heating, features two squads that have seen some ups and downs already as Franklin hosts Kelley-Rex division rival Taunton.

The host Panthers had two good wins to start the season, including a late defensive stop to hold off Brockton in Week 2 before suffering a big loss on the road to Duxbury. Franklin bounced back in a big way in its first Hock game of the season with an impressive win over North Attleboro.

“I really like that guys have stepped up when they’ve had it,” relayed Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “We’ve had different quarterbacks, different running backs, different guys on the line…and the same thing on the defense, some things we weren’t expecting. But things happen and guys step up, it’s nice to see the depth answer the call.

“It’s been a good team atmosphere, this is a very tight group. It can be easy to fall into the success of past teams or past players, but they are making this team and this season their own.”

FHS girls & boys soccer teams top Mansfield on Wednesday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, Oct 4, 2023.

Boys Soccer = Mansfield, 0 @ Franklin, 1 - Final
– A goal near the midway point of the second half proved to be the only difference in a hard-fought battle between visiting Mansfield and host Franklin. Senior Hansy Jacques was there to tuck away the rebound after Mansfield keeper Ty Duffin made a terrific save on a shot from Andrew O’Neill. “Both teams played excellent defense, Mansfield worked very hard,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. Matt Sullivan helped keep the deficit at just one for the Hornets with a goal line clearance.
Lockdown defense leads to 1-0 win over Mansfield. Hansy scores the lone goal from Andy. Gianni gets the Juice for strong end-to-end play! Milford at 330 on Friday is next.  https://twitter.com/_FranklinSoccer/status/1709740267803131910

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 4 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final
– Franklin jumped out to a 3-0 lead and pulled out a tough road win that keeps the Panthers just one back of KP in the league title race. Julia Scarpellini scored Mansfield’s lone goal, off an Alexandra Fernandes cross, that cut the Franklin lead to 3-1.

Investigation on school shooting hoax calls continues

Over the past year, more than 500 schools in the United States have been subjected to a coordinated campaign of fear that exploits the all-too-real American danger of school shootings, according to a review of media reports and dozens of public records requests. The Washington Post examined police reports, emergency call recordings, body-camera footage or call logs in connection with incidents in 24 states.

The calls are being investigated by the FBI and have generated an aggressive response by local law enforcement — particularly after officers in Uvalde, Tex., came under criticism for waiting more than an hour to confront the gunman during the May 2022 elementary school massacre.

In state after state, heavily armed officers have entered schools prepared for the worst. Students have hidden in toilets, closets, nurse’s offices. They’ve barricaded doors with desks and refrigerators. Medical helicopters have been placed on standby while trauma centers have paused surgeries, anticipating possible victims. Terrified parents have converged on schools, not knowing if their children are safe.

Police reminder on vandalism of hydrant painting contest: "Don’t touch things that aren’t yours"

via Franklin Police Dept

"The Franklin Department of Public Works is currently conducting its annual fire hydrant painting contest throughout town. There have been over 30 entries to this contest this year. Each contestant submitted an application to the DPW with their proposed design. There are 3 age brackets for this contest, 18 & over, 12-17, and under the age of 12. Winners of this contest are announced at the upcoming Touch a Truck event hosted by the DPW on October 14th.
Although you may see people painting area fire hydrants this is not an invitation to do so on your own time. This is all being done with the approval of the DPW. Unfortunately, others have decided to ruin this event and have vandalized 2 painted hydrants in town, one belonging to a child under the age of 12. All non-approved painting of public hydrants is vandalism and destruction of public property. Don’t touch things that aren’t yours."
