Via the Franklin Public School's Facebook page, we share a couple of recent posts to highlight how creative the delivery of school lunch can be within the budget. Delivering healthy, locally sourced, and cost effective meals to students.

"Don't mind us, we're just reminiscing on last week's delicious marinated streak tips with asparagus and brown rice. Our Food Services team sources beef locally to ensure the highest quality is available to our students. This steak was sourced from MeatWorks out of Westport, MA.

The farms were Twin Willow Farm (Westport, MA), Howard’s Farm (West Bridgewater, MA), and Sunny Knoll Farm (Westminster, MA)"

"What does the School Committee do?"

With a little over a month until its time to pull nomination papers (where does time go?), I thought I would once again share "What does the School Committee do?" and "just how much of a time commitment is this?" https://t.co/epya1uEEGL

The School Committee provides oversight & direction to the operation of the District. The committee's role, responsibilities & high level operating procedures are established in the context of Chapter 71, section 37 of the general laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Our primary responsibilities are to approve the budget, establish policies, and hire/evaluate the Superintendent. The implementation and achievement of these goals lies with the Superintendent and the administrative team.

School Committee meets twice a month, however December & July we usually only meet once, for the regular meeting. These run anywhere from 2 - 3 hours (generally). You receive the materials in advance so you have time to thoroughly prepare for each meeting.

The School Committee also has several subcommittees and liaison roles (you can find a full list here: https://franklinps.net/district/school-committee/pages/subcommittees-and-liaisons) and you are required to participate. Each committee/liaison role varies in time commitment.

There are also joint budget subcommittee meetings, town council meetings, finance committee meetings, town events, school events, etc etc that we attend. This is not a small commitment. I am available to answer any questions for folks looking for further information!

TLDR: The role of School Committee is not to run the schools, but rather to establish the policies by which the schools are run & to oversee their maintenance in a broad sense... it is also not a "light lift", it is a lot of work, requires time from family, but is rewarding

Food Services Honored by YMCA Red Triangle Awarded to... Congratulations to our Franklin Public Schools Food Services team on receiving the YMCA's Bernon Family Red Triangle Award. Earlier this month, our food services team was recognized for their efforts to make and deliver meals within our community through the district's partnership with the YMCA. Our Food Services team takes pride in providing nutritious and delicious meals within our district and to our greater community. Final Redistricting Analysis Update On May 9th, 2023, the School Committee voted 6-1 to approve Option 1, which proposes that "current district attendance boundaries remain the same while a School Facilities Master Plan is conducted. ASMS/Keller spaces will continue to be used flexibly. Both administrative teams at the complex will continue to work together to utilize the available space to accommodate the needs of all students." Franklin Public Schools Business Administrator Miriam Goodman Awarded a 2023 Friends of MASBO Award.

Superintendent Lucas Giguere is proud to announce that on May 18th, 2023 during the Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials (MASBO) Annual Institute conference, Franklin Public Schools School Business Administrator Miriam Goodman was bestowed a 2023 Friends of MASBO award. 

The Friends of MASBO award is given in recognition of individuals who have met one or more of the following criteria:

1. Have made a significant contribution (including but not limited to pro-active involvement in the legislative process, the creation of a model program/procedure, the establishment of an exemplary standard or practice) that facilitated a process by which school business officials contribute to educating students in their districts;
2. Have consistently, and on a long-term basis, provided significant assistance to MASBO in the implementation of its various functions and responsibilities; and/or
3. Have provided assistance to MASBO in a way that exceeds expectations.

Superintendent Lucas Giguere and former Franklin Public School Superintendent Dr. Sara Ahern co-endorsed Goodman for the award, stating that "Miriam's expertise and collaborative approach has led the district into a new era of enhanced transparency of the Franklin School Budget with the development of an extensive, engaging (student-centered) budget book while developing the story of school funding in Franklin, so that stakeholders can better understand past trends and future needs in a clear and compelling way."

Notable moments in Goodman's tenure have included her support in transitioning school business operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic; including setting up grab and go meals in collaboration with our Food Services department, appropriately applying COVID-19 relief funds in an impactful way, as well as managing transportation services, providing insight during a redistricting analysis process. 

After 15 years of dedicated service to the district and longstanding involvement with MASBO, the timing of this acknowledgment coincidentally concludes Goodman's career, as she is set to retire at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Upon reflection, Franklin School Committee Chair Denise Spencer notes how "Miriam has truly blessed our district with her dedication, knowledge, work ethic, business finance savvy, friendship and sense of humor. She has always looked out for the best interest of Franklin Public School students and staff. We are grateful for the positive impact she has had in our district, and we will miss her."
