YMCA Basketball and Cheerleading Teams Are Forming

Winter Leagues start Dec. 2 (for ages 3-11)

As winter approaches and kids anticipate shooting hoops and hustling on the courts, we’re reminded that the sport of basketball was invented by a YMCA institution – nearby in Springfield, MA. Moreover, the game’s first professional team came from a YMCA. Locally, the Hockomock Area YMCA is currently enrolling youth for an active winter of basketball and cheerleading leagues.

Millions of people have been introduced to sports at the Y, and whether your child is just starting, new to team sports, or a regular on the courts, YMCA Sports are worth checking out.

With an emphasis on skill development and sportsmanship, you’ll find an environment where everyone plays and develops. Enrollment for the 8-week season (running December 2-January 27) is now open. Details as follows:

"Recent security upgrades helped keep an unwanted visitor out of the Parmenter Elementary School, officials said during an update on school safety this week.
Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said a reconfigured entrance - part of ongoing security efforts - kept that person from entering the building. Sabolinski, along with Assistant Superintendent Peter Light, gave a presentation on school safety at Tuesday night’s School Committee meeting.
Sabolinski said school safety ties in with the district’s recent work with social/emotional learning, especially the idea that students have to be emotionally ready to receive instruction.
“If students do not feel safe in school, they’re not learning,” she said. “The research is replete with data (showing that).”

"they’re definitely going to go places"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"The high school’s varsity cheerleading team is preparing to travel to New York this weekend to take part in a national competition.
A Tuesday night showcase event celebrated the team as it moved on to the competition, the Platinum Nationals at the University of Rochester.
Coach Amy Murphy said the squad, which cheers at football and basketball games, had already competed in several levels to qualify for the event. At competitions, she said, the team’s routine is judged on a number of factors, including tumbling and the team’s overall dance motion.
“In order to max out the score, you have to have all your stunts hit and your transitions have to be precise,” she said."

"join Rattle City in supporting the Panthers"

Caroline Cafasso writes about Rattle City in Pantherbook:

If you come to a Franklin High School sports game, there’s a good chance you’ll see the famous Rattle City. In fact, it probably would be hard to miss.
You’ll see dozens of FHS students, some decked out in odd and festive costumes, and others holdings signs and pictures. Everyone, however, will be chanting and screaming, rooting for their beloved Panthers.
So what exactly is Rattle City? Despite its size and prominence, there are still many FHS students, particularly underclassmen, who do not know or understand its role. It may be because the name “Rattle City” may not have an obvious meaning to everyone. The idea is to have a fan section that is so rowdy and enthusiastic that it psyches the opposing team out. It was inspired by various colleges whose students practiced such a strategy during sports games.

Franklin Cheerleaders Participating in Cheer for Dana-Farber Fundraiser

New fundraiser gives cheerleaders the opportunity to help conquer cancer

Cheer for Dana-Farber
BOSTON — Cheerleaders from Franklin are participating in the Cheer for Dana-Farber fundraiser. As a part of this new fundraising initiative, the Franklin High School Junior Varsity cheerleaders will raise critical funds to support adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The fundraiser kicked off on Sept. 2 and will conclude on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. The concept of this new fundraiser was submitted by cheerleading coaches Maureen Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) and Tamara Hayes (Shirley, Mass.). To participate in Cheer for Dana-Farber, cheerleading teams can fundraise in their local communities through initiatives such as car washes, bake sales, and canister collections. There is no minimum fundraising requirement.

"As a cheerleading coach and being involved in high school athletics, I am honored that Cheer for Dana-Farber has become a reality," Sullivan said. "So many of us have been touched by cancer in some way, and we wanted a way to help support patient care and research at Dana-Farber. This fundraiser will teach young adults about giving back through their passion for cheerleading."

All teams that raise $1,000 or more will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize— a chance to perform a pre-game cheerleading routine at Gillette Stadium on Dec. 29, 2013 when the New England Patriots host the Buffalo Bills. Each additional $1,000 raised earns teams an additional ticket entered into the drawing. The top five fundraising teams will be invited to a master cheer class run by the New England Patriots cheerleaders at the Dana-Farber field house in Foxboro, Mass.
