One swing enabled Taunton to top FHS baseball in D1 final 2-1

"The two teams, which were the top two seeds in Div. 1, were on a collision course all postseason. They split a pair of games during the regular season, both winning on their home fields, and it was only fitting that Saturday night’s rubber match at LeLacheur Park would determine not only who would win the season series but who would win the state championship.

Taunton (22-3) was held without a hit until a leadoff single in the fourth, but scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and got a stellar, complete game effort from Evan Cali> to secure a 2-1 victory over league rival Franklin (23-4). The victory earned the Tigers their second D1 title in three seasons.

“They’ve got great hitters one through nine, so for him to come out and only give up one run was more than you could ask for,” Taunton coach Blair Bourque said when asked about Cali’s performance. “I was hoping to get a couple innings out of him and next guy up, and for him to come out and throw a complete game, what a great culmination of his senior year."

Via HockomockSports.com & Boston Globe, we share the results of the FHS spring sports playoff action on Tuesday:

Girls Lacrosse - Division 1 = #6 Franklin, 5 @ #3 Lincoln-Sudbury, 9 – Final

Baseball - Division 1 = #1 Franklin, 4 vs. #4 Shrewsbury, 3 – Final

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"One of the strengths for Franklin all season has been that each game a new player steps up to be the hero. The Panthers haven’t relied on only one or two players to get to this stage, but instead have gotten big plays from throughout the roster.
In Tuesday night’s Div. 1 state semifinal at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on the campus of Holy Cross, it was Ben Jarosz’s turn.

After the Panthers let a 3-1 lead slip in the top of the seventh, Jarosz came to the plate with one out, two runners in scoring position, and the infield drawn in all the way around. He quickly fell behind 0-2 to Shrewsbury reliever Benjamin Griffith, but then he started battling. Jarosz fouled off a series of two-strike pitches, staying alive until he got a mistake. Then he pounced.

Jarosz smacked a ball just out of the reach of the diving first baseman, allowing Jase Lyons to race home with the winning run. The Panthers stormed out of the dugout to chase down Jarosz in shallow right, celebrating a 4-3 win and the chance to face league rival Taunton in Saturday’s championship game."

Baseball - Division 1 = #9 Bridgewater-Raynham, 0 @ #1 Franklin, 5 – Final
– Franklin scored all five of its runs between the fourth and fifth innings and senior Jacob Jette tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Panthers to a spot in the Division 1 Final Four. The Panthers had a run on in each of the first three innings before finally cashing in in the fourth inning, sparked by a leadoff single from Evan Raider. Pinch runner Jacob Crisileo moved to second on a ground out and then to third on a single from Jase Lyons. Eisig Chin smacked a two-run double to score the first two runs, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a squeeze bunt from Ben Jarosz. In the fifth, Ryan Gerety led off with a double, took third on a passed ball, and came home to score after a dropped third strike. Chris Goode, who earned a one-out walk and stole second, came in to score on an RBI single from Henry Digiorgio. Jette worked around a bases-loaded situation in the first, getting his second strikeout in the inning to end the frame. After that, he only allowed one hit (one-out single int he fifth) and one walk (lead off in the fourth) while retiring the side in order in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings, finishing with eight strikeouts. Franklin will play #4 Shrewsbury in the D1 Final Four with a date and time to be announced.

Boys Lacrosse - Division 1 = #10 North Andover, 7 @ #7 Franklin, 12 – Final

A pair of goals from Luke Davis and one from John Walshe presented the Panthers with a 3-0 lead after a quarter, and Franklin followed with a 6-0 second quarter to seize a 9-0 lead by halftime. FHS baseball posts win vs. Chelmsford to advance to Round of 8 in playoffs

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the FHS spring sports playoff action on Wednesday:

Baseball - Division 1 = #16 Chelmsford, 2 @ #1 Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin overcame an early two-run deficit and escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning to slip past upset-minded Chelmsford. After the visitors staked a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Franklin plated a single run in the bottom half of three straight innings. In the bottom of the second, junior Eisig Chin brought home Evan Raider with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half, and in the bottom of the third a two-out single from Chris Goode brought courtesy runner Luke Sidwell (Joe Tirrell walk) to tie it 2-2.

After a 1-2-3 inning from junior Alfred Mucciarone (6IP, 4H, 2ER, 0BB, 5K) in the top of the fourth, the Panthers pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Jase Lyons led off with a single, took second on an error, and advanced to third on a ground out. After back-to-back outs, Tirrell delivered a single to left to bring Tirrell home to make it 3-2.

Mucciarone kept rolling, retiring the side in order again in the fifth and sixth innings. Chelmsford threatened in the final inning against Franklin’s bullpen with a one-out single, a two-out walk, and then an infield error to load the bases, but James Kuczmiec induced a grounder to second for the final out

FHS girls basketball win to advance in playoffs, boys hockey and boys basketball teams end their playoff run

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the FHS winter sports action on Tuesday:

** Girls Basketball - Division 1 = #11 Lincoln-Sudbury, 23 @ #6 Franklin, 60 – Final

** Boys Hockey - Division 1 - #19 Franklin, 1 @ #3 Hingham, 4 – Final

** Boys Basketball - Division 1 - #12 Catholic Memorial, 81 @ #5 Franklin, 78 – Final (OT)
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Halfway through Tuesday night’s contest between Franklin and Catholic Memorial, things weren’t looking very good for the host Panthers.
At the end of the fourth quarter, Franklin nearly walked off with a crazy comeback win.

After all was said and done, Catholic Memorial emerged with an 81-78 win in overtime, withstanding a gutsy comeback effort from Franklin to advance to the Division 1 Round of 8.

Franklin trailed by as much as 19 points overall, and even trailed by a dozen with six minutes to go but was able to rally to force overtime."

FHS boys hockey tops Wellesley to advance in D1 playoffs

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the FHS winter sports action on Saturday:

Boys Hockey - Division 1 = #19 Franklin, 6 @ #14 Wellesley, 2 – Final
– Dylan Marchand scored a hat trick, helping the Panthers jump out to a 5-0 lead that it would never relinquish, booking a spot in the Round of 16 and a rematch with Hingham. Domenic Lampasona opened the scoring for Franklin after nearly seven minutes and Marchand added a pair of goals in the next two minutes to break the game open. Marchand completed his hat trick a minute into the second and then Ryan Sicchio pounced on a rebound for a power play goal to make it 5-0. Wellesley would get on the board before the end of the period, jumping on a rebound after a pair of stellar saves by Cole Pouliot-Porter. Franklin cleared off a major penalty, but late in the third (again after a couple of Pouliot-Porter saves) Wellesley would add a second. Only seconds later, Ben Jarosz found an empty net to seal the victory.

FHS football falls to Springfield Central In offensive showdown 49-60

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap of the FHS football match vs. Springfield Central in the D1 Final Four on Saturday at Shrewsbury High School.

"Springfield Central’s offense delivered punch after punch all throughout its D1 State Semifinal clash with Franklin.

The Panthers kept getting back up.

The Golden Eagles and its high-flying offense came as advertised, scoring eight touchdowns with over 500 yards of total offense. Central scored on five straight drives in the first half and then three straight in the second half. A lot of teams would have folded, at least at some point.

But not this Franklin team. Not these Panthers.

The top-seeded Panthers had four first half touchdowns of their own and three more in the second, cutting the deficit to just three at 44-41 in the fourth quarter."
