"Chances are it is the most influential amendment to the US constitution that you aren’t familiar with. Given its impact, it is astonishing how little the 14th amendment is discussed in public life. Americans can’t rattle it off like the first and second amendments – but its words have fundamentally shaped the modern definition of US citizenship and the principles of equality and freedom entitled to those within the country’s borders.

Sitting at the crux of these key ideals, the 14th amendment is cited in more litigation than any other, including some of the US supreme court’s most well-known cases: Plessy v Ferguson, Brown v Board of Education, Loving v Virginia, Roe v Wade, Bush v Gore, Obergefell v Hodges. And because these noble notions are embedded in the 14th, it has the remarkable ability to generate both boundless hope (for the promises of that more perfect union aspired to in the constitution’s preamble) and crushing misery (for the failures to achieve such promises)."

Zooming into the Future, Part 3 This Time for Sure. (Sigh!)

Take two –

Live! On Wednesday July 29th – It’s our first Zoom meeting from Town Chambers.

We didn’t get there last week.

After a 3-hour power failure on Friday 7/17, most of our TV control room had stopped working. Disaster. We spent a few days rebuilding – resetting, replacing digital devices that failed. Last Wednesday evening we discovered more hidden failures. When tested earlier, some systems indicated that they were operating properly, but in fact were not. The meeting couldn’t proceed.

We have been in Chambers since last Wednesday – reinstalling, retesting, refining and improving the control room’s many functions. We will continue upgrading and testing – and retesting everything for our planned meeting this Wednesday.

Remote meeting apps – Zoom, Google, Skype or Webex – all introduce complexity. Their use must be easy for participants in Chambers or via the Internet. It must also be easy for the meeting managers and our TV control operators. It poses design issues that we must address for everyone. We will add improvements as we move forward.

FM #196 - Cathleen Liberty, Franklin’s Health Director

Back Up - Just Do It

The fact that you are reading this is the result of a very bad thing – followed in short order by a very good thing. The bad thing? My computer died. It was sudden and final on Thursday. I wasn’t there to witness its passing. I expected a quiet evening, only to be confronted by the Microsoft Blue Screen of Death. If ever there was a Greek or Roman god of digital stuff, that all-digital deity had it in for me. (Sigh!)

The good thing? Backup! My digital stuff – every last bit of my digital life – lives in three places. I accessed my backup files – typing this very missive and program schedule with my backup computer. Yes, I have one.

Digitally, this is not my first cataclysmic crash, nor will it be the last. How often? It happens roughly every 3-5 years. It’s never pleasant, but it is survivable.

Back Up - Just Do It

Our lives are increasingly digital. Our computers and smartphones rule our day, making our lives easier, better – until they fail.

Failure is not an option. Not today.

That’s because backing up all my digital stuff is not an option.
It’s essential.
