Historical Museum Saturday: Rod & Gun Club Display opens & Archaeology at F. Gilbert Hills State Forest

Saturday, October 5 – Historical Museum Display begins honoring the 90th anniversary of Franklin Rod & Gun Club

Local historian, Betsey Whitney (the Second Sunday Speaker for October), worked with the R&G Club to assemble exhibits of photos and memorabilia relating to the history of this organization which has included so many residents over the years and has also supported local scouting groups and other causes. 

Also included will be an ongoing showing of vintage R&G films recently rediscovered and digitized. Display will continue through October 27.

Saturday, October 5 –  Celebrate Archaeology at F. Gilbert Hills State Forest with Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)

Last year, for Archaeology Month, DCR came to Franklin and led an exploration of the former CCC Camp in Franklin State Forest. This year, we are encouraging those interested in something similar to join DCR in Foxborough! 

• Where: F. Gilbert Hills State Forest Headquarters, Mill Street, Foxborough

• When: Saturday October 5, 2024, 10 AM - 1 PM; Inclement weather will cancel this event

• What: Learn about Archaeology and the history of F.G. Hills. See DCR’s archaeological collection from F. Gilbert Hills and participate in hands-on archaeology activities

• Who: Everyone is welcome. The event is free.

Community Preservation Committee to view digitized output before funding project (video)

The Community Preservation Committee met on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 as scheduled. One item was on the agenda.

Alan Earls, Historical Commission Chair, provided an update on the funding being looked for by the Rod & Gun Club to digitize some films from the 1940's & 1950's. The Club may have already done so but any funding would help them cover the costs (approx. $3,000).

Committee expressed desire to see a sample of the output before committing to fund. Details were being arranged to do so.

Franklin Rod & Gun Club schedules annual Fishing Derby Saturday, June 1 from 7 AM to 2 PM

The Franklin Rod & Gun Club has scheduled their annual Fishing Derby on June 1, 2024. 

The flyer displays all the info. Registration is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. 

All kids under 16 get a trophy and prizes, we have free equipment to use including boats, life jackets, rods/reels (while they last). 

Breakfast is available for $5 and there's pizza for lunch for free. 

The event routinely gets more than 150 people to the Rod & Gun Club for a really great time.

Having heard of Uncas Pond here and here, I decided a needed to go exploring to find it. Sunday was humid. I needed a little extra incentive to run in the heat. I decided that since Uncas Pond was off Summer St, I'd go find it. Finding it would give me an excuse to stop for pictures (and rest as well).
