"Last month, a former Lowell building inspector was convicted of larceny after swindling an elderly neighbor out of her home. A year ago, authorities accused a Raynham woman of scamming her stepfather out of $200,000. And just last week, a Waltham man pleaded guilty to a securities fraud scheme that stole $82,000 from victims including a senior citizen and his own girlfriend.
Those incidents are among countless examples of financial abuse and exploitation of elders in Massachusetts.
“Financial abuse is an extremely important topic in the commonwealth,” said David P. Stevens, executive director of the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging. “We need to make everyone aware of the extent that this is going on and the issues involved in it.”

In the News: more affordable senior housing, dance center offers camps

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The Town Council this month took a step that could lead to more affordable housing for seniors.
The council - at its July 13 meeting - unanimously voted to convey about 17 acres off Panther Way to the town's Affordable Housing Trust Committee.
Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said 22 acres was originally given to the town by the School Committee about 15 years ago. The town went on to provide five of those acres for the construction of the housing for the elderly development Eaton Place.
Nutting said that there was the potential for another 50 or 60 units of senior housing at the site. He said, if the project goes forward, those units could be bigger than the existing ones at Eaton Place."

"Let’s do our part to ensure that our loved ones are getting the care and medication they need"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"By now, we’ve all read or heard about the opioid epidemic sweeping our country. Some of us may have a loved one who struggles with addiction. Some of us may have lost a loved one to the disease.
What many of us may not know is that the senior population is growing increasingly addicted to opioids. A September 2015 AARP article says that between 1993 and 2012, “the rate of overdose deaths for adults ages 55 to 64 soared sevenfold,” and a June 2016 article reported that since 1999, deaths among those age 50 and up increased “nearly… eleven fold.”
Addiction to painkillers — or opioids like fentanyl, oxycodone and morphine — can have a devastating effect on those suffering from the addiction as well as on their friends and loved ones."

In the News: senior assistance approved, recycling business fined, feedback from seniors sought

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin

The Town Council considered - and ultimately accepted - two initiatives intended to make it easier for local seniors to pay their property taxes.
The council unanimously approved a higher tax exemption for seniors older than 70 who make less than $19,000 a year and a higher ceiling for the senior tax work-off program.
Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said an increase in the state's minimum wage at the beginning of the year - from $9 to $10 an hour - allowed the town to bolster its work-off program, in which seniors volunteer at town departments in exchange for credit on their tax bills. The town is only allowed to pay seniors up to the minimum wage.

"Expanding access to elder programs is something myself and Representative Garlick explore regularly, and it is our hope that this community conversation will be provide additional data and input to inform the decision-making at the state level. I have had the pleasure of meeting with the seniors for the past three years and I am delighted that the House Chairman of the Joint Committee on Senior Affairs is coming to Franklin to further these discussions."

"Twenty years from now the majority of people in Massachusetts will be 60 years old or older," said Rep. Garlick. "We have to make sure that the resources we have are meeting the needs. I'm coming to Franklin to get feedback from seniors on whether what we are doing is enough or whether we need to do more in certain areas."

All seniors are welcome, with a special invitation to seniors from Rep. Roy's district of Franklin and Medway. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Rep.
